Non starch polysaccharides

In addition to these nutrients our diet should include food high in fibre also called non starch polysaccharides (NSP).

Fibre absorbs water in the intestine and helps keep the waste food (faeces) soft and bulky so it is removed from the body quickly and efficiently.

When this does not happen, the resulting constipation causes discomfort and in extreme cases small pouches called diverticula form in the walls of the intestine leading to a condition called diverticulitis that can cause extreme pain. In severe cases surgery may be necessary to remove part of the bowel.

Brown bread, oats and barley.

Foods high in fibre include wholegrain flour, bread, oats and muesli.

Wholegrain rice and pasta are also good sources of fibre as well as breakfast cereals, porridge, fresh fruit and vegetables.

Water is also important to keep the body hydrated as it is part of all body fluids. It also helps avoid constipation.

The Eatwell Guide recommends that 6-8 glasses should be drunk daily. This can be any non-sugar drink including low fat milk, tea, coffee and water.
