Equal Pay Act (Northern Ireland) 1970 (amended 1984)
The Equal Pay Act ensures that you receive the same pay as anyone else who is doing the same or similar work within your place of business.
You are also entitled to the same conditions, such as sick pay, holidays, and bonuses.
Sex Discrimination (Northern Ireland) Order 1976 (amended 1988)
No one can discriminate against anyone else because of their gender 鈥 male or female 鈥 in the following areas:
- employment;
- training and education;
- provision of goods, services and facilities.
Race Relations (Northern Ireland) Order 1997
No one can discriminate against you because of your:
- colour;
- race;
- ethnic origin;
- national origin.
Fair Employment and Treatment (Northern Ireland) order 1998
No one can discriminate against you because of your:
- religious beliefs;
- political opinions.
Disability Discrimination Act 1995
No one can discriminate against you if you have a disability in any area of public life such as housing, employment, or access to services.
All businesses must ensure that they provide disability access, such as wheelchair ramps, to their buildings.
The government plays a vital role in setting the tone in society.
One of the most effective ways for the government to create a socially just and equal society is communicating with people. They can encourage us to be more thoughtful and inclusive through public communications programmes and education.
