Writing your own music - structuring your composition
You might already have an idea about how many sections your composition will have, but this may change as you develop your ideas.
If your composition is in a specific style, you should consider the conventions of that style. See the Structure GCSE Bitesize page.
You might also find it helpful to consider the following questions:
- What is the length of the piece?
- How many sections will it have?
- Will sections repeat, and in what order?
- What form will the introduction and ending take? Will they use extracts from other sections?
- Will there be a contrasting middle section or bridge?
- Is the structure of the piece appropriate for the style of music?
Many of the exam boards expect a clear structure in compositions, so it is important to give yourself some time when deciding on the structure rather than letting it evolve by accident.
