Design

Design is a vital part of developing and producing a fully functioning website.

Good design ensures that users can easily find information on hundreds or even thousands of different pages. The structure of a website is important to show clearly, as it will strongly influence the way a website works.

At Higher level, you are expected to understand a multi-level website with:

  • a home page
  • two additional levels
  • no more than four pages per level

In exam questions, you will see the pages that must be in the navigation bar with a shaded background (in the example below, yellow)

When learning about the structure of a website, a hierarchical diagram is an effective way to exemplify the site. An example of this can be seen below:

Website hierarchy showing home page at the top, leading to news page, weather page, social media page and 大象传媒 bitesize page, all four at the same level. Bitesize page also leads on to a quiz page.

Website design example

A new website is being designed with a multi-level structure.

It consists of a home page with a horizontal navigation bar that gives clear links to four main areas (pages). Each of the four main pages will have links to relevant sub-pages.

The diagram below shows the navigational structure of the website:

Website hierarchy with a home page leading to news page, weather page, social media page and 大象传媒 bitesize page, all at level 1. Each page leads to more pages that are labeled as level 2.

Once the website structure has been designed, the next step is to design each individual page.
