Ink can be used with a pen to create drawings, but it can also be used in a similar way to watercolour. Inks can be used together with watercolours or on their own.

Ink gives a rich, glossy result when used on its own. When mixed with water it becomes and creates subtle variation of tone and colour.

Inks come in bright colours which create results. The more these are mixed with water, the more muted the colours become. Mixing colours will also tone down the brightness.

As with watercolours, coloured inks are mixed together before being applied to the surface.

Tools and materials

Cheap brushes are best for ink because it can be difficult to clean the ink out afterwards. A pipette can be used to drop small amounts of ink onto the surface.

Surfaces

Thick paper or cardstock is best for painting with ink, as it can wrinkle or tear thin paper.
