What is the 4x table?
If you know your 2 times table, then you鈥檒l be able to crack the 4s in no time.
Look at the 2 times table and the 4 times table below. Can you see the relationship between them?
In each case the 4 times table is double the number in the 2 times table.
The 4 Times Table | The 2 Times Table |
---|---|
1 x 4 = 4 | 1 x 2 = 2 |
2 x 4 = 8 | 2 x 2 = 4 |
3 x 4 = 12 | 3 x 2 = 6 |
4 x 4 = 16 | 4 x 2 = 8 |
5 x 4 = 20 | 5 x 2 = 10 |
6 x 4 = 24 | 6 x 2 = 12 |
7 x 4 = 28 | 7 x 2 = 14 |
8 x 4 = 32 | 8 x 2 = 16 |
9 x 4 = 36 | 9 x 2 = 18 |
10 x 4 = 40 | 10 x 2 = 20 |

Example 1
How can you use the 2 times table to work out 7 x 4?
Look at this array. It shows that 2 x 7 = 14.
If the 4 times table is double the 2 times table, then you can double the array to find the answer to 4 x 7.
Double 7 is 14 and double 14 is 28.
7 x 4 = 28
Does this trick work with division too?
Yes! But this time, you would do the opposite and halve and halve again!
Example 2
How can 24 梅 2 help you solve 24 梅 4?
First, let's solve 24 梅 2. This part-whole model shows 24 is made of two parts of 12:
Now that you know that 24 梅 2 = 12, you halve that answer to find 24 梅 4.
Half of 24 is 12 and half of 12 is 6.
24 梅 4 = 6
Example 3
Mindy counted 8 cars going past on her way to school. How many wheels were there altogether on the cars?
You can use your 4 times table knowledge to work out this problem.
Since there are 4 wheels on a car, you need to work out 8 lots of 4:
8 x 4 = 32
There were 32 wheels altogether.
You can double check this by using repeated addition:
4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 32
