Outsider pressure groups

Description

Some rural pressure groups have used direct action to express their concerns over the ban on hunting. The 鈥楻ural Rebels鈥 pressure group felt that the democratic process was failing them, so turned to a campaign of demonstrations. Blockading the M74 and releasing foxhounds in Holyrood Park were part of their efforts to win a 鈥榮ound-bite and pictures war鈥 to get their message across.

Classroom Ideas

This clip could be used to illustrate an example of direct action used by some pressure groups. Students may wish to use Rural Rebels as a case study and conduct further research into other pressure groups and the methods they use to influence decision makers. Students could undertake research into the effect that technology (including online petitions, Facebook and Twitter campaigning) have had on pressure group methods.
