Retaining Scots words in our everyday lives
Description
School children from Aberdeenshire talk about their favourite Scots words. Dundee poet Mark Thomson performs a poem which is packed with Scots words. Mark goes on to comment on how important it is to the Nation to preserve and continue to use the Scots tongue. Robert Burns is identified as a vital component in this quest to promote our Scots language.
Classroom Ideas
Encourage students to take a short piece of their own writing and translate it from English to Scots or Scots to English. They should read both versions before the class then discusses how the language and word choice has changed the mood or tone of the piece.
