Alternative punishments
Description
Surveys questioning the efficacy of custodial sentences and chronic overcrowding in prisons have led judges to consider non-custodial sentences for minor crimes. These can include fines, community service orders, suspended sentences and tagging.
Classroom Ideas
Following the clip, encourage students to share their ideas and previous learning to discuss the reasons when an alternative to prison would be suitable and why. Research could be carried out into the effectiveness of different forms of punishment and re-offending rates investigated.
