Composing for television and film

Description

BAFTA winning composer, Paul Leonard Morgan, talks about writing soundtracks for television and film. He describes how his experience arranging music for pop and rock bands influences his scoring and shapes 鈥榟is sound鈥. He talks in detail about the process of composing for pictures, his relationship with the producer and director and how their decisions directly affect his work.

Classroom Ideas

Divide the class into groups and give them a choice of a short video or film sequence to create or source a musical response to. The groups can use desktop editing and sound mixing programmes to create a soundtrack to the piece. They could use conventional or electronic instruments or found sounds for their music. In each case, they should consider the atmosphere they want to create, as well as relating the timing of the music to the action on screen.
