Google Video gets with the closed captioning thing

Busy times at Google. It seems there's a press release almost every day about something. If it's not the acquisition of the video sharing website , then it's the linking of their Blog Search to Google News or it's the launch of , which is a customisable search service. So if you missed the small gem about them introducing closed captioning to on their , I can't blame you. I only stumbled over whilst looking for something else.

Pretty early days for this by their own admission. Currently closed captioning can only be added to Flash videos, and they look a bit like old-fashioned subtitles so contrast is a bit of an issue. And, er, it should be said that at the time of writing, only with closed captioning were available - and of those, quite a few couldn't be viewed from outside the US. But it's to be applauded that they are having a go.

I don't know what will happen to Google Video with the acquisition of YouTube, but hopefully closed captioning will continue to be developed and improved. And as they have come up with an interface that allows users to add their own closed captioning, hopefully this will lead to many more videos with closed captioning.

The Google Video team are looking for feedback about the service, so if you want to get involved or stay up to date with the service, visit their .

Only problem I will have when they change to Google Video from Youtube is are they going to keep all the classic Tv stuff people post there. I will be a shame to lose the great classic Tv clips I see there and loss of history.

What is an w3c web accessibility initiative?

Thanks.
