iPlayer testing expanded
- 18 May 07, 07:56 PM
The ´óÏó´«Ã½ iPlayer, which is the media player that will deliver the corporation’s catch-up service for TV and radio, moves into an exciting stage of development next week with the launch of ´óÏó´«Ã½ iPlayer Beta.
Sections of the ´óÏó´«Ã½ staff were the first to get their hands on the iPlayer prototype, then known as ´óÏó´«Ã½ TV Test. One of the advantages of being an organisation the size of the ´óÏó´«Ã½ is that they have a lot of people to test with, including staff with accessibility requirements.
The public then got its first look at ´óÏó´«Ã½ TV Test with the initial broadband on-demand trial - the IMP (integrated Media Player). This stage was especially interesting, as it exposed the ´óÏó´«Ã½'s digital infrastructure for the first time to a wider range of software and hardware set-ups than within the ´óÏó´«Ã½.
´óÏó´«Ã½ TV Test is receiving a final pimp-my-ride style makeover, complete with go-faster stripes, before emerging as ´óÏó´«Ã½ iPlayer Beta. Next week invitations will be sent to people that expressed an interest in trying out iPlayer Beta via the ´óÏó´«Ã½ website. These people will put the iPlayer through its paces, with further invitations issued in due course. If I don’t get my invitation next week, then I certainly hope to amongst later trialists! Not a moment too soon either, as I’m still kicking myself over missing Horizon the other night…
There is no substitute for robust testing. The only way to check for compatibility problems is to expose the ´óÏó´«Ã½'s digital infrastructure to a wide variety of computer set-ups. By having a large group of people, from novice users to experts, check out ´óÏó´«Ã½ iPlayer Beta, any issues in downloading and watching programmes will soon be discovered. The resulting feedback will then be used to resolve any issues before the official launch of ´óÏó´«Ã½ iPlayer later this year.
The ´óÏó´«Ã½ is not responsible for the content of external internet sites

I have tried, unsuccesfully on each occasion that there has been a version of the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Iplayer to download the bloody thing! I can't get any help without spending a fortune on 0870 numbers (which I refuse to use).
I am not a novice I have used and programmed computers since their inception on operating systems ranging from cpm, dos and unix all the way through to Vista and I can confidently say that whoever is responsible for the Iplayer and it's associated web pages should be sacked.
I now officially give up especially after the download page reckoned I wasn't a UK user! Last time I looked at my details I had lived in the UK for 60 years.

I am trying to register to Beta test IPlayer. Can someone point me in the right direct as to how I do this.

I waited an hour after the activation mail, I've waited a lot longer now - I still can't access the system (my password keeps getting rejected).
Any ideas?

I can't get beyond the intial login dialogue box, which just keeps reappearing each time I enter username/password. Tried Opera, Firefox and even IE7.

I too have the same problem of not being able to get past the initial logon dialogue box. An e-mail to the contact detai given has brought no response.
Has anyone who has encountered this problem actually had a resolution, and if so, would they care to share it with the rest of the population?

At least I'm not the only one to have their password rejected! I've tried three computers and four browsers and still get error page 401. Has ANYONE managed to login yet?

I've managed to download and install the iPlayer today. It may be I can pass on some tips:
Alan - have a look at the FAQ's. You should have got the URL for them in your activation email. You may need to contact your ISP provider to see if they have registered your IP address with the ´óÏó´«Ã½.
Password issues - note that you need two lots of passwords and usernames. The ones that came in the activation email for the trial, and one lot to register as an iPlayer user. They aren't the same. If that isn't the problem and you can't get the first password to work, reply to the activation email and request a new one.
David - the iPlayer should work with IE 6 and IE 7.
As a general tip, a bit of patience and persistence works well. If it doesn't work the first time, it probably will on the 2nd or 3rd try.
If you think I can help with any other issues, leave a comment here, or email me via the link on the page.

I have been using the iplayer this very evening to watch 'Have I got news for you?' It took a bit of fiddling to get running but now is fine.
I have already commented that there are some issues (like the fact that it only works on IE and not firefox) but it is a good system.
I am impressed.

I use Mozilla Firefox instead of Internet Explorer, but the iplayer didnt like it, so I had to use IE. Might be a good idea to make it compatable. Great so far though.

Downloaded the software 1st time last thursday and have had no bother using it what so ever, the only things that have bothered me are little bugs with systems but since its a beta I'll not lose sleep about it. To all of you complaining, it's a beta and It's supposed the have snags, the idea of us getting it is to find the bugs and report them so as the bbc can get them sorted. Or did you forget?

How do you actually get the iplayer? I've been searching all over the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Site and can't find much of any help.

Well, I have successfully downloaded and installed the iplayer but can I download anything? Not a chance! I choose the programme (I have tried a few random ones and ones I actually want), it appears in the iplayer window and says it's downloading, but nothing is happening. Do I need to open ports in my router/firewall? According to the resource monitor, it isn't using the network at all. I'm starting to get desperate now as I wanted the Sgt Peppers programme from Saturday and it's only available for another 24 hours. Help!!

I know this is a beta test, but it would be great if I could actually get the iplayer to work properly in the first place so I can give it a proper test.
I have sucessfully downloaded one program but it will not play. Another program says it's downloading, but nothing has happened for days!
I thought iplayer was meant to be simple to use and operate. (The help files are all but useless.)
I am an experienced computer user, god help any newbies out there trying to use it!

I downloaded the player about a week ago and it all worked perfectly right up to the point where I tried to download an actual show I have tried the stuff I want, the stuff I don't want and even the stuff I'd be ashamed to say I'd even heard of (Holby Blue - I figured sod's law might kick in) but nothing works. For the last week all I got was a message about experiencing technical difficulties but now I can't even get off the home page... ho hum back to You Tube I guess.

I must be one of the lucky ones.. I downloaded the software and it worked first time (using ie 7) I've downloaded several programmes of various lengths all have worked well.
The programmes have played back a little jumpy but not enough to make them unwatchable.
I'm a little disappointed when certain programmes advertised on the webpage don't actually exist or just aren't available - but then it is only a Beta test.
Its all good.

Since after the last "improvements" a few weeks ago, I was unable to use the downloaded Player because it would not recognize my username or password, I, after trying and trying, over several days, eventually deleted it, I have now re-registered with new details.
Guess what? When trying to download the software I got an Error page, again and again.
I was looking forward to this "venture" but this now ridiculous: too many "Errors", too many "Unavailables", too much bother.
I have taken part in a previous Test, last year, that was fun. This one is nothing but a joke.

Requested login details three days ago. Nothing has come through - not even an acknowledgement that my application has been received. An inauspicious start to the "future of TV"! A commercial organisation simply wouldn't operate in this way. I guess the licence-funded ´óÏó´«Ã½ don't really need to care so much

So far so bad.
I received my olg in details yeterday and I logged on using Firefox. I could browse the site but I was unable to download anything. The site advises you need to use internet explorer. However when I use internet explorer it freezes and it unable to even display the ´óÏó´«Ã½/iplayer site, so catch 22. Very disappointing, some very poor choices have been made at the ´óÏó´«Ã½, I only hope that someone wakes up tomorrow to find that they will no longer be getting paid from TV licence fees.

I tried using the service this morning. Logged in, clicked download programme, it said I couldn't use the service because I don't have Windows XP, Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player. I had all of those (they were ticked) and it still didn't let me do anything.
Very poor technology choices. Windows Media Player, Internet Explorer? It's not 2001 anymore, the internet has moved on. Oh, and Heroes wasn't in the list of programmes I could watch. Damn you!

I've just downloaded iPlayer.
Why was there no mention that it came with the KService.exe parasite?
Fortunately I had NetMeter running & spotted that it was stealing a chunk of my Bandwidth.
iPlayer now deleted.
Complain about this post
A couple of days ago I installed the new ´óÏó´«Ã½ iPlayer which is a facility to download ´óÏó´«Ã½ TV programmes up to a week after broadcast.
BEWARE
Download speeds are very slow and other online apps get crippled whilst
iPlayer is in use. This is because the download also installs Kservice.exe which is a Peer to Peer application which shares the programme being downloaded amongst those downloading it. (Sky and some other TV companies apparently also install the blighter).
Here's the rub - Kservice.exe continues to run when iPlayer is not running - it chomps huge amounts of bandwidth and still slows other apps! All the time!
I traced the problem using Zone Alarm and have blocked Kservice.exe from access to the internet.
There are instructions on t'internet for getting rid of Kservice.exe which I am about to try, of course this sly bandwidth thief does not appear in
add/remove programmes and it remains on machines after iPlayer has been removed.
Nice one Beeb.

No choice but to bin the ´óÏó´«Ã½ iPlayer.
The KService locks in at 98% and it takes on average 20 mins for the iPlayer library to display. Everything locks out. It takes 3-mins to open explorer, another 2-mins to have a lokk at the c-drive. And I've still not been able to watch a single programme I've downloaded. It's an aboslute shambles.
If I set-up an application this bad and put it out on a beta test I'd be fired before the end of the first day for sure.
´óÏó´«Ã½ you should be ashamed of yourself. What a total disaster !

I've installed and now deleted the beta Iplayer - The problem is Kservice and the fact that I do not recall any mention that this obnoxious programme would take over my computer and broadband. How could the ´óÏó´«Ã½ allow themselves to supprt such a programme, one that hides itself in the system and even when disabled from the startup programme it still runds and chews up the CPU usage and bandwidth. It is really disappointing that such a long awaited Iplayer should ruin itself in this way.

Just had kittens as my firewall reported denial of service attack on my computer from kservice.exe. Hit the panic button and unplugged broadband. Ran Sophos virus checker and Adaware but found nothing... and then found this link on the ´óÏó´«Ã½ web site.
The idea of downloading ´óÏó´«Ã½ tv is excellent but I think some mention of kservice should be made.

Having struggled with the DRM folder problems for two days, I eventually succeeded to get iPlayer to download and play...but what an effort! Downloads are very slow, and pause without warning, so you have to keep checking to "un-pause" the download.
More worrying is the fact that kservice.exe has taken over my modem and uses my bandwidth almost nonstop. This slows my computer, and stops the powersave from operating. This WILL need fixing during the beta stage testing as it is not acceptable for the final package.

Re: Kservice
If you want a service such as ´óÏó´«Ã½ iPlayer and you want fast downloads (mine are - Telewest cable), then you need to be on a P2P network, you can't expect the ´óÏó´«Ã½ to provide that much bandwidth itself.
HOWEVER, I do think that you should be able to throttle back Kservice to say 20% of your available bandwidth, when you are not actually downloading anything yourself.
I just tried lowering the priority of Kservice using the windoh's Task Manager and got 'Action Denied'! Now that, I do not like at all!!
What say you ´óÏó´«Ã½, can this be sorted?

Re: kservices bundled with ´óÏó´«Ã½ i player what on earth were the programmers thinking of...
the bandwidth on all isp network servers must be buckling under the load....did the ´óÏó´«Ã½ not want to invest in some more super computers to backup 1000's of copies of the programmes offered for download?? ,
ive got a feeling that this service may be running on 20 Dell servers in the a shed in the ´óÏó´«Ã½ garden!!

I installed iPlayer on my computer (XP sp2, using ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 7), and found EVERYTHING ground to almost a halt (e.g. several minutes to switch from one window to another!). I had to uninstall it and disable Kservice to get it running again. Not Good !
Then I tried installing again, but on an alternative boot partition with XP sp1 I keep for experiments, NOT installed with ZoneAlarm (or any other , and iPlayer and all else seems to work OK!
My suspicion was that iPlayer does not sit happily with ZoneAlarm - or perhaps many other security suites?

I've downloaded the iplayer software and my passwords work OK but even though I've downloaded the software when I try to download a program it just asks me to download Iplayer. I've tried everything on the FAQs I've turned my firewall off etc and still does the same thing. I even uninstalled iplayer with the Kclear thing and tried reinstalling and still get the same problem. It has also caused a Delivery Manager services error to pop up everytime I boot my pc up. Re: kservice.exe
if you want to make the most of the iPlayer service then block the ports that kservice is using when you dont want to use it and open them when you do. When kservice thinks it cant reach the internet it goes back to sleep and obviously cant do anything this has stopped it hogging the cpu for now. Or if using a firewall like Comodo then block it at the application level.
what to know the ports and what is required just ask.
Complain about this post
I too am suffering problems with K service it is hogging over 70% of the CPU resource and thrashing the HD even though iPlayer is not loaded.
I tried downloading a program, it is stupidly slow. I now the download speed my ISP/PC can achieve and this is achieving less than 10% of that.
So 70 to 85% of CPU and a big chunk of my broadband, sorry iPlayer has to go.
Complain about this post
I have been using iPlayer for some time now, and, apart from the problems with Kontiki (I cancel it within Task Manager when I have finished with iPlayer, and my firewall asks every time Kontiki starts up) and the fact that it does not run in my default browser, Firefox (this means that I have to have a copy of IE7 on my PC, and delete any files/cookies etc. from within IE7 - Firefox does that automatically when I leave it), I have found another problem.
The files that are downloaded are spread all over my hard drive, according to the defragmentation report. When I tried to defrag. my drive, it told me that certain files could not be defragmented - guess which ones ? I had to move the folder containing the videos to my other drive, defrag. the first drive, and then move them back. No wonder my machine runs slower and slower, with all the fragmented files.
I don't know if this is a feature of the way that I download them (several at once, paused when I want to use my PC for anything else), but this is rather a pain.
Any ideas ?

I think it is too early for this sort of service. We need to have a more up to scratch phone / broadband network before telly across the internet becomes the norm. Otherwise a few determined iplayer users are going to cripple the country's internet connections for everyone.

Just for the record, I'm another user having serious issues with the way KService is running on my machine.
Listen up Beeb, lots of people are talking about this one - I've used a lot of P2P software in my time, and they should be achieving a good download and upload rate with minimum DISTRIBUTED processing power - not taking control of the ENTIRE CPU intermittently.
Turning the service off when not downloading is no solution - I actually want to USE my PC for things while downloads are going on.
I'm a software engineer, I know you can do better than this badly engineered executable - sort it out please, this is such a promising service - but you've got serious issues here. Thanks.
