Put some blue into the daily grind

has launched a service to provide news, articles and user submitted content with a twist – it is intended for visually impaired people, and the content comes in an audio format.

The news stories are taken from . You can listen to specific news items, be it the latest shenanigans of Pete Doherty in the Entertainment section or the more serious shenanigans of Paul Wolfowitz* in the Business section. Each of the ten sections, that include categories such as, Technology, World News, Politics and so forth, are available for download as podcasts so that they can listened to on an mp3 player, or as a radio station for a computer.

There is also a section for user-submitted content and articles. Because the website is so new, there isn’t a great deal of material available right now. There is an entry by author about a . It is taken from his blog, and demonstrates how Bluegrind could be a cool tool. Bluegrind makes it easy to turn a blog entry into a podcast. So if this catches on with bloggers, it could provide a wealth of content to download to an mp3 player for the long commute in the morning.

Bluegrind is firmly in beta testing and is very much a work in progress. The website is not yet complete, and the ‘audio version’ of the site causes some problems with screen readers and hotkeys. This means that the audio version of the website is best avoided right now. More worryingly, the feedback form is unworkable because of a security feature known as a CAPTCHA. This is an image of text that is invisible to screen readers. These teething problems need to be quickly resolved if Bluegrind hope to reach their target audience and convert an interesting idea into a success.
