Welcome to the first of Adam Buxton's Big Mixtape shows. The multi-talented Julian Barratt helped Adam kick things off with a show dedicated to weird and wonderfully flavoured music in the shape of Øddens.

That was awesome, Buckles. Thank you so much. Can't wait for next week.

Can I be so bold as to offer a tiny Mac lesson? If you hit Apple +Alt it will start downloading to your default download folder without you having to scroll down & select the download option. More of a tip than a lesson, really.

Really enjoyed the big mix tape offering today, you would totally NOT get a show like this on commercial radio, thats for sure!

Adam, followed by Huey, followed by Jarvis? Makes for a blissful Sunday afternoon of listening.

    Hey Dr Buckles

It's Tony Mansfield who was the main man in New Musik, not Mike Mansfield. Mike Mansfield was that rather camp chap who used to say "Cue the Music" on Supersonic. Remember?

Other than that, good stuff on the Mix Tape! Toodles.

Hello! I've only listened to the first half so far but will listen again to the rest. Would like to let you know that I really really loved it, though. Great music, great chat, great times. Here's hoping it carries on! I really liked the off-kilter music that was played, just my cup of tea...

  • Comment number 5.

What a joy to hear adams dulcet tones through the digital airwaves again today!

  • Comment number 6.

Great show Adam. You played some of my favourite music as well - Everything in its right place; Boat of Car; Vangelis' Blade Runner Main Theme; Gossipo Perpetuo (Something I heard, as I recall, when you and Joe became 'sporting buddies').

I can't wait to hear more - it was an outstanding show.

  • Comment number 7.

Really enjoyed the show, though it was great. Particularly loved your Peter Gabriel style covers, floored me!

  • Comment number 8.

Adam, I love you. Julian is wonderful, Count Buckules is wonderful, the show is wonderful. Can't wait for next week.

  • Comment number 9.

If you worry about your beard then your beard may get worse, just relax and be calm in the knowledge that WE LOVE YOU! Silly bunny; beard or no beard, groomed or unkept, you're still you. Which is nice x

  • Comment number 10.

    Unkempt*? stupid brain.

  • Comment number 11.

I thought it was absolutely fantastic, the music was brilliant, and the Peter Gabriel bit almost had me falling out of my chair I was laughing so hard. And Barratt was a really good interview/co-dj.

Very very good to have you back Adam :)

  • Comment number 12.

Loved the mix tape Capatain Buckballs.
When i read the mission statement...(mission statement?) i was wondering if you'd play that Jean Jacques Perrey song. Joe and you played it on that Dermot o'Leary Sporting Buddies show and i have searched for it since then. Thank you for opening my ears and releasing me from the quest for the synth sampler song.

  • Comment number 13.

Loved it! Julian made for a great guest, but can't wait to hear Louis next week. Squee.

  • Comment number 14.

I could tell the Buckmeister was anxious about venturing out of the garden shed after having his Cornballs removed, but he neednt have worried, right from Bob Dylans appearance to the hilarious Peter Gabriel interpretations (is the man going through a hollywood divorce or something??) it was comedy gold!!

  • Comment number 15.

Fantastic show. I feel a group hug coming on!

  • Comment number 16.

Excellent - didn't catch the full show, just the podmax... shows that Buckminster can bounce off anyone!! one 'tip' (and who the hell am I to offer advice to a legend?!), stop being nervous - you were gggGGGRREAAATTTTT!!!

And the easter special means I finally understand why everyone does this --

    XxOox

  • Comment number 17.

I think one of your guests should be Joe Cornish.

  • Comment number 18.

Brigadier Buckaroo can bounce with the best of them. He was even bouncing off Liz Tarbuck recently on Radio 2 (sitting in for some highly overpaid bloke or other) - that must have been quite an experience.

The debut of the new show was conspicuously auspicious. Tunes were odder than a cat with no tail; I like that. And Julian was quietly hilarious; hiding in plain sight while naked is going in the 'must try that' notebook. Adam was hilarious too, natch, though not quite so quiet. And possibly, overall, hairier.

The Peter Gabriel segment was standout, and I'd like to see this concept taken further, with you crazy guys doing a similar covers project to his own; perhaps called 'Scratch My Sack'. I would pay handsomely to hear, e.g. Bono, giving it the full emote treatment to 'The Hours', and Annie Lennox earnestly warbling her heart out with 'All Night Garage'.

  • Comment number 19.

I only have to read the playlist to know that is going to sound Super-Xtreme-Amazeballs! Although I did initially get a bit confused reading the track listing when I saw "The Police Wuthering Heights" and thought "hmm - where did they get all these cover versions from? ... OH. RIGHT. I'll just go over here and facepalm for an hour or so."

Nice work Count Doctor Buckules. Julian Barratt's beard doesn't hold a candle to yours, by the way.

  • Comment number 20.

Really enjoyed the show, I was surprised at how many "odd" songs I already knew really well, but this only confirms the suspicions about myself. I thought Julian was a great guest, with some good stories, he seemed to really enjoy talking about his music choices, bring him back again.

  • Comment number 21.

Hey Adam Star-bux and James Producer, congratulations on a great show...it was really very entertaining. Long may it continue!

  • Comment number 22.

If you like weird then don't just dig his film music Vangelis was in Aphrodite's Child.

A greek prog rock band with Demis Roussos on vocals and bass! how can you say no?
The Four Horsemen on the 666 album is beautiful.

    wonderful show.

  • Comment number 23.

Also on the subject of Vangelis, he DID have some hits with Jon anderson from Yes - 'I Hear You Now', and 'I'll Find My Way Home'.

    - one of them sounds like the Brookside theme, don't you reacon?

    Brillshow, keep it comin man!

  • Comment number 24.

Fantastic show Adam! Really enjoyed it and the Scott Walker track was genuinely quite good, so I've got some investigating to do. I recognised your first track from when you and Joe were on 'Dermot's Sporting Buddies'. Do I win a prize for most deranged and obsessive superfan?

  • Comment number 25.

Lovely! More mix tapes, more interesting guests. More beards. You must keep broadcasting - a 6Music filibuster. So long as Adam is on the air 6Music cannot be closed down. We will feed you toast and honey and send drinks made from the tears of 6Music listeners. But what is this? Adam also on Radio 2? Did you kidnap Jonathan Ross or is he under that new motorway bridge support on the M1? When Joe returns will you divide all the ´óÏó´«Ã½ radio stations between you?

  • Comment number 26.

Must be strange recording without Joe. Rooting for you always with purpose-made "I heart Adam" pompoms.

    Sula vie milejo,

    Hazel xx

  • Comment number 27.

Great show, tuned in to hear Adam being funny but have been listening to low non stop since! Great show, looking forward to more!

  • Comment number 28.

Congratulations to A&J and the team on the Sony nomination!
Thoroughly enjoyed the Big Mix Tape too - well done Dr Buckles... Xx

  • Comment number 29.

Number one on itunes when I tuned in today... Joe is gonna be flippin' furious! Enjoy basking in glory x

  • Comment number 30.

Tuned in? That makes no sense, um replace that with looked!

  • Comment number 31.

Wow!! I was all ready to hate this without the Joester. But wow!!! This was fantastic. You should seriously consider a long-term partnering with Julian. Noel is surely going the way of a champagne supernova soon. Keep 'em coming.

  • Comment number 32.

Cheers for using my question (re: Boosh wardrobe) - though am gutted Julian doesn't reuse his costumes. It's a multipurpose tweed utility suit, remember? Zips down to trunks...

Splendid job, and great to have you back, Adam!

  • Comment number 33.

Do a show with David Mitchell and Joe can do a show with Robert Webb

  • Comment number 34.

class as always Dr Buckles, great to have you back on 6 music

  • Comment number 35.

Wow - what a weekend! There was no doubt that the gig with Leeeeza would be brilliant, but I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed 'Oddens', being (ahem) the wrong side of 40 and a bit square. The Silver Apples - blimey - many people are called 'ahead of their time' but they were amazing. I've now been off to listen to the whole album and am addicted. Can't wait for the next big mix tape!

  • Comment number 36.

    wick wocks

  • Comment number 37.

Dr Buckulees I think we can safely now add Paul Weller to the fantastic list of awkward celeb interviews (Roger Moore being at number 1!). Great work - I think you have invented the radio version of 'The Office'...

Oh, and for the record, if the "wella wella wella huuh" comment had gone down well would you have then gone for 'Worsties'?

    Love and hugs xxx

  • Comment number 38.

Hhhhmmmmm - currently listening to ads on listen again radio 2 - wrong but right ;)

  • Comment number 39.

I only just got to catch up with Mix Tape 1 yesterday on the podcast! I’m a bit behind, missed the show and the week of iplayer!…but I really enjoyed it and I wanted to nudge you further in the direction of Scott Walker’s more wonky albums. In particular, I would recommend downloading the opening track from Tilt, ‘Farmer in the City.’ I heard this song about 8 years ago on Stuart Maconie’s old ‘Critical List’ show on R2 and taped it off the radio.

It is amazing. I have no idea what it is about, and yet it is still hugely moving and you feel like you’ve been through a profound experience having listened to it. Musically it’s very graceful and swoops from note to note in a beautiful orchestral way, it is one of those songs that gets right inside your chest, it’s an absolutely perfect, 10/10, heart-filling, tragic yet inspiring listen. Hmmm, no career for me as a music critic there but I hope you will check it out.

Looking forward to sitting down sometime this week with Mix Tape 2 on the iplayer.

I also caught the Radio 2 fun on Saturday on my headphones while doing my shopping and picking litter out of further Norfolk hedgerows!! Nice to know someone else does it too.

  • Comment number 40.

Adam, your patter is awful mate.....stick to kids radio if there is such a thing! Listening to your interview with Weller was cringworthy & embarrassing, please don't cover for Rossy again & take Liz "That was a pleasing sound" tarbuck with you x

  • Comment number 41.

Oh Weller, Weller, Weller, UHHHH, tell me more, tell me more!

    Actually, that's enough thanks.

  • Comment number 42.

Love the snippets of music! Why arn't they on all podcasts?

Just gotten around to listening to this, at work. Donnie Darko soundtrack has a great oddens type score.

  • Comment number 43.

Great show again! You can always rely on the Barratt to pick weird stuff, although strangely not as weird as I thought it would be!
Great choice with the Bladerunner soundtrack (an album that gets played to death in my house) beautiful stuff.
Good old Scott Walker too... has he done any solo stuff that isn't weird?
