NEXT WEEK'S GUESTS!
Blog Soldiers
Thanks for all those Emmy The Great questions. I asked her a lot of them and I hope a good proportion of her answers will make it to the final edit. What a completely charming person Emma Lee was! It was one of the most relaxing and enjoyable shows we've done so far.Ìý
Over the next couple of weeks I'm doing some filming for a TV pilot starring the comedienne Joanna Neary so this week we're going to record a couple of Big Mix Tape shows more or less back to back and once again it would be great to have your questions to put to my guests. On Monday we'll be recording a show with actor, writer, comedian and Twitter nabob Peter Serafinowicz. Peter always seems to have about 20 projects on the go. If he's not doing a TV show, he's got a part in a movie or he's filming a sketch for Funny Or Die with some famous American friend, or writing joke Tweets for his many followers or directing music videos for . In fact I've just decided he's a ponce and I'm going to have to give him an envious duffing. I'll do that before we record the show though.Ìý
The theme for that week's Mix Tape is music that is in some way funny, either intentionally or not. Not all novelty and comedy songs basically, because that would be a little much, but a few, and some other odds and sods that are for whatever reason, chucklesome.Ìý
On Monday night my producer James and I will be attending the Sony Awards as the Saturday show with Joe has been nominated in the comedy category. We're up against some heavy hitters so I'm not writing my speech just yet but I'll go along and stare at Chris Evans and embarrass myself trying to talk to Jarvis Cocker so that'll be fun. The next day we'll record another Big Mix Tape, and I hope my guest will be Liza Tarbuck who I last saw at Radio 2, shuffling papers awkwardly as the Modfather wished harm upon me. She hasn't said she can definitely make it but I'm keeping my fingers crossed and I thought she could help me put together a break-up tape.Ìý
As ever, any questions for Peter definitely, and Liza possibly would be very much appreciated by Team BMT!Ìý

And another question, who are your comedy influences, because I would like to know how your comedy came to ferment into the hilarious, strange and blasphemous gloop that it is today.

Excellent new show. I'm thoroughly enjoying it. The over earnest or creepy songs NOT to include in a mix tape for a fancyee had me hooting with laughter last week.
A song that always makes me laugh for it's overblown pomp is Jackie by Scott Walker.
I've been listening to the ´óÏó´«Ã½ podcasts since they came out and only just got the Weetabix element to the 'weaker bits' sting about a week ago. I always just thought it was very amusing in it's own right. I felt like a knob.

The only question for Peter has to be what's your favourite area in the shipping forecast?
Now slightly funny songs. Don't really do novelty tracks but these never fail to make me smile;
Bare Naked Ladies - Be My Yoko Ono
Donald Fagan - The Goodbye Look
The Beautiful South - Don't Marry Her (the album version)
The Rezillos - (My Baby Does) Good Sculptures
Kirsty MacColl - Don't Come The Cowboy With Me (Sonny Jim)
Ry Cooder - Crazy 'Bout An Automobile (Every Woman I Know.)
The Cars - My Best Friends Girl
Madness - Night Boat To Cairo
The Monkees - Randy Scouse Git
Harry Belafonte - Jump In The Line
Lemon Jelly (again! but they are terrific) - Nice Weather For Ducks
Starlight - The Superman Lovers (I don't it makes me smile it just does)
And of course, the wonderful New Mistake by Jellyfish.
Can we have a little bit of info on the Break Up Tape mix, Nice Mr Adam? Is it a tape that we are giving to someone who we have just broken up with or for while we wallowing in self pity, remorse and Pot Noodles? I have suggestions for both.

Mix Tape ideas...tricky....I feel bad about beating Sennas-elbow again!
Dancing Fool - Frank Zappa
The Sweater Song - Weezer
Joy Division Oven Gloves, - Half Man Half Biscuit (hilarious lyrics)You could pick any song by them really. How about All I Want for Christmas is a Dukla Prague Away Kit.
We're Not Supposed To - Supergrass
Anything song from the mighty boosh by Julian Barratt
Unintentionally funny...even trickier and hard to think of on the spot:
Teddy Bear - Red Sovine (really bad, not really sure if anyone would want to hear it, but very cheesey)
Vegetables - Beach Boys
I'm gonna have to go away and have a good think about this....

My anecdote is as such...
When I was doing A Levels, I managed to get my science teacher to play an episode of Look Around You to the class under the guise of revision. We got pretty much to the end of an episode before she noticed. It was one of those vague revision lessons, where the teacher is barely there. Very funny though, especially the gratuitous use of pencils and pointless clamps.
The things you (Peter) do are largely very funny, but mainly the dance at the beginning of your TV show.
Thanks!

What about Kevin Eldon's 'Machadaynu' from Look Around You series (it's on youtube).

"The Break-Up Song" Veruca Salt
"Go your own way" Fleetwood Mac
"Officially Dead" Veruca Salt
"Done with love" The Whispertown 2000
"Nothing Better" The Postal Service
"British Columbia" The Elected
"Your ex-lover is dead" Stars
"Gonna get along without you now" She & Him (although it's a cover)

Bourgais Tagg (sp?)- I Don't Mind At All.
Del Amitri - really can't decide between Tell Her This & Driving With The Brakes On.
EBTG - The Heart Remains A Child
Joan Armatrading - I Really Must Be Going (but only for when you've been having an affair.)
Ryan Adams - Harder Now That It's Over
Liza Minnelli & PSB - So Sorry I Said
Level 42 - Leaving Me Now
Prince - How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore?

Don Henley - Heart Of The Matter
Gerry Rafferty - Whatevers Written In Your Heart
Hall & Oates - She's Gone
Sad Cafe - Everyday Hurts
And these last four are the WMDs of break-up songs. They should be approached with extreme caution if you've had your heart broken recently.
ABC - All Of My Heart
Walker Brothers - No Regrets
Prefab Sprout or Tom Ford - Bonny
Soul Family Sensation - The Day You Went Away

There are lots of clever/amusing little lines in the song, but I particularly like the way he sings "Angela Jolie" instead of "Angelina Jolie", I still can't decide whether he did that on purpose because it had one less syllable, or he actually got her name wrong. I'd like to think the latter, that's one in the eye for Jolie, so to speak.
All the best!

It's always a pleasure to hear your darth maul tones in my ears, I hope you and adam have fun on the mix tape. My question is this - How is Brian Butterfield? I worry that many of his get rich quick schemes may not have lasted the recession? I do hope he's okay, although I have heard tell that he's landed a job in number 11 as a senior adviser to chancellor george osborne?? is this true?!?
more peter serafinowicz show please!!!

I'm guessing it probably wasn't "Love you bye! xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxox" ;) Ach, the fallout wasn't so bad. Only one disgruntled mod turned up here, and even he signed off with a kiss.
Too late for break up songs as well, but anyway...
Doors - The End. I actually sang this at the farewell of a special friend. Not in an overblown, karaoke way, or sarcastically to drive the knife in; it was all tastefully low-key. As far as the Doors can be anyway.
Echo and The Bunneymen - Ocean Rain
Stones - Ruby Tuesday/It's all over now/Angie
Beck - Golden Age
Heavy Trash - The Pill (for a Betty/Elizabeth)
Geneva - Museum mile (multitasking with chill cake usage)
Arctic Monkeys - Cornerstone (if hoping for a rematch)
And of course, for extra poignancy, Bill Haley and his Comets - See Ya Later Alligator
