A technical perspective

Posted from:Angostura
The altitude has been a shock but the source of the Amazon was amazing - water just spewing out of this wall. The mountains are covered with snow and the landscape here is totally epic. It's been really, really tough and it's very cold, so technical things like keeping batteries charged is a problem.

We've all been working 15-hour days, no-one's sleeping well because of the altitude and the cold. The laptop is not working, and keeps crashing and wiping the hard drive. We all hope it's the altitude and I think we really need a few days to sort ourselves out.

The people we've met have been brilliant and they really welcomed us all with open arms. They've showered Bruce with gifts and dressed him in a poncho and a Stetson. Two nights ago they held a coca leaf ceremony for Bruce and a lamb was sacrificed to bless his journey along the Amazon. I've never experienced anything like it before. It felt unexpectedly really emotional, as if we were suddenly part of something much bigger than we'd anticipated. I suppose it puts all our technical problems into perspective.

Next stop is the river and Bruce taking on Class Five rapids.
