Vitantonio Liuzzi - classic F1

Post categories:

Andrew Benson | 06:00 UK time, Wednesday, 12 October 2011

is the latest driver to choose his five all-time favourite grands prix for ´óÏó´«Ã½ Sport's classic Formula 1 series.

The HRT driver, who elected to stay in F1 for a seventh season this year with a back-of-the-grid team rather than look for a more competitive drive elsewhere, certainly knows his F1 history. The Italian's selection comprises five all-time classic events.

Vitantonio Liuzzi

Liuzzi decided to join HRT this year to ensure he kept his name alive in F1

A race famous for what Liuzzi describes as the "amazing fight" between 's and Renault's over second place in the final three laps, as the two men passed and re-passed each other, occasionally banging wheels in perhaps the most frenetic three laps of racing in F1 history.

The race also marked Renault's first win in F1, courtesy of Jean-Pierre Jabouille, and the first for a car with a turbocharged engine - the type of power-plant that is returning to the sport in the new 'green' F1 from 2014.

This race featured perhaps the most chaotic closing stages in F1 history, with five different leaders vying for the win, and was described by Murray Walker at the time as "certainly the most exciting, eventful grand prix I have ever seen".

Long-time leader crashed his Renault at the chicane in a late shower of rain, leaving 's in front and on course for his first F1 win. But he, too, was caught out on the slippery track, spinning just three-quarters of a lap later than Prost, this time on the hill down from Mirabeau to Loews.

Patrese managed to bump-start his car but only after being passed for the lead by Ferrari's , who then stuttered to a halt, out of fuel, in the tunnel. That should have given the lead to 's but he, too, had stopped with an empty tank, even before he got to the site of Patrese's spin. And driver , who could also have moved up, had stopped with a broken driveshaft. All that meant Patrese crossed the line in the lead, even though, as Liuzzi points out "he didn't know he'd won".

A familiar choice, this is a race that is central to the legend of Ayrton Senna and a key event in his bitter feud with arch-rival Prost, then his team-mate at McLaren. Prost led for much of the race but was caught by Senna in the closing stages. When the Brazilian went for a pass at the chicane, the two men collided.

Prost knew he was world champion if both men retired. But as he climbed out of the car, Senna decided to continue. He pitted to replace a damaged nose cone and recovered to pass Benetton's Alessandro Nannini for a brilliant win.

Senna was later controversially disqualified, leading to the extraordinary development of McLaren appealing against the result of a race that had given the world title to one of their drivers. The appeal was unsuccessful.

Like Monaco 1982, another chaotic finish in the rain, with perhaps an even more extraordinary result. Heavy downpours led to the retirements of many leading drivers, including world champion . And the race was brought to a premature end when first crashed his Jaguar at high speed coming on to the pit straight and then 's Renault ploughed into the debris.

The result hinged on who had crossed the line at the point the race was stopped. Timekeepers initially handed the win to McLaren's but Jordan were convinced their man had won. Jordan appealed, successfully, and Fisichella was named as the winner, Raikkonen handing him the trophy at a little ceremony before the following race, the San Marino GP at Imola.

Arguably the best grand prix there has ever been - and one we dealt with when Mark Webber made his selections last week.

As always, we pick one 'feature' race, so this time we have gone for Monaco 1982. The full Grand Prix programme of the time is embedded below. Underneath it, to whet your appetites for the action in Yeongam this weekend, are links to short and extended highlights of Alonso's momentous victory in last year's inaugural Korean Grand Prix.

On satellite, cable and Freeview, they will be broadcast between first and second practice on Friday 14 October from 0335-0555 BST.

2005 Japan - yes still the top race ever for me.

Not so sure about Monaco though. btw is Monaco one of the races that ´óÏó´«Ã½/SKY will generously allow licence fee payers to watch in 2012?

'Gawd bless you sirs for your kindness'.

    No to SKY

  • Comment number 2.

2005 again, but who can blame him?

Good choices other than that, thats the first time I've seen the 1979 French. I've heard all the folklore and could tell you what happened in the race but had never seen it. Truly brilliant racing.

Brazil, Japan, Monaco? Will we see any of those classics on the ´óÏó´«Ã½ next year?

Yes to RTL with 5Live and a massive NO to Sky.

  • Comment number 3.

some good races there once again :)

cant imagine the current races having problems like Monaco 1982

    no to sky

A link to this article of the main page would be helpful!!

Great choices by Luizzi and if he has as much good luck this weekend as he had bad luck last weekend he will probably win the Korean GP in the HRT!

    To the ´óÏó´«Ã½ team.

Great job at Japanese grand prix. Forum was top notch and felt as much part of the celebrations as possibly could sitting at home, all the team are excellent together, even Eddie! Please don't be tempted by a bit of extra cash to go behind the pay wall were most fans will never see you again!!

    To the ´óÏó´«Ã½ management

Why did ´óÏó´«Ã½ abuse it's dominant position by blocking the channel 4 bid??

Why not just walk away so the bidding process could happen and F1 wouldn't be allowed to disappear behind a pay TV wall because of the Concorde Agreement??

Why being a publicly funded organisation do the worst possible deal for the people who fund it??
The fans didn't want the 15 million wasted in a joint deal with SKY which gave the loophole out of the Concorde Agreement and the non fans didn't want 15 million of their money wasted either.

When are these questions going to be answered?

    @6.SirAdamOfWarburton

It's only a rumour based on their probable dropping of the interactive service for the remaining races, and the fact that the contract runs out at the end of this season.

But it happened to Sky Italia, so who knows.

Like I said Sky UK have an advantage over Sky Germany, in as much as the ´óÏó´«Ã½ only show 50% of the races whereas RTL show them all ... but every journey starts with a single step :)

  • Comment number 8.

    @7 Czar-Orac.

I know its only a rumour but its quite easy to draw comparisons between the base model they have and we have. They have never been truly shafted like we have as it has always been a choice there between FTA and Pay Wall subscription.

If Bernie hasn't noticed this then he really is losing it, but I'm pretty sure he is aware and just doesn't care, showing complete contempt for loyal fans.

Well, that's the whole point, isn't it. The sport we love, admire and will have to do without (yes for 50% of the races, but who wants to only watch half?) next season thanks to a waste of money that is the Olympics coverage and a certain man's epic greed.

Yes, the whole débacle is getting old now, but no-one ever got anywhere by keeping quiet, did they? ;)

    Dear Andrew,

Can you let me know when ´óÏó´«Ã½ Sport plan to release details on their 2012 season coverage?
Following on from when, I'd like to understand the specifics so can the ´óÏó´«Ã½ answer:

    1) Which of the ten F1 races will the ´óÏó´«Ã½ not be covering live or showing in full later that day?

    2) Are ´óÏó´«Ã½ attempting to re-sign Martin Brundle and David Coulthard, or is this part of the F1 cuts as well?

    3) Do ´óÏó´«Ã½ managment plan to make further year on year cuts to the F1 coverage throughout the duration of the deal?

    4) Are ´óÏó´«Ã½ doing red button F1 forums next year?

    5) Do the ´óÏó´«Ã½ managment feel they could have handled the announcement of the new deal better, better understood the value of F1 from audience numbers and ´óÏó´«Ã½ Trust reports, and if they feel they have been taken for a ride by Bernie Ecclestone?

Glad to see the ´óÏó´«Ã½ have finally got into the habit of screening the Classic GP's inbetween Practices 1 & 2 on freeview. Its been so obvious for the last 2.5 years, but only now has it become regular... just in time to lose the coverage.. though i hope there can be a way the ´óÏó´«Ã½ can broadcast Classic GP on TV next year.. it may be one of the few trump cards it can play to combat Sky's coverage.

Excellent choice in Monaco 82 - a couple of points. Firstly, the speed at which they went through the post-tunnel chicane was mind-blowing! Secondly, who was in charge of the opening titles that season? As 'The Chain' explodes into life we have a shot of a mechanic polishing a Lotus. Dramatic stuff.....

  • Comment number 25.

some good choices in there just a shame its 50% of what we all be able to watch next year unless you are prepared to watch the ten races the ´óÏó´«Ã½ wont be showing on sky for £470.00 in standard def or £600 for HD and lets face it most people can not afford that sort of luxury especially with finances and job security being what it is now. Imagine you team only winning the races that are not shown free to air so all you get is a pointless highlights program thats lost all the tension and excitement of a full LIVE race where you probably already know the result.what a disgusting way to treat fans that have been loyal to the sport..... no to sky

2005 Japan, a great race thats for sure. I wonder if we will ever be able to see another great race from Japan, or just some limited highlights of what they "tell us" was as good as 2005.

The Astra idea doesnt help those that cant have a sattelite dish for whatever reason, but still its good to know about it.

Im sorry its so late! I had started writing this post at 9am but then Tony Jardine started talking and well when I eventually woke up it was lunchtime! Im not sure if this is a skybet presentation but if not there is a hell of alot of "bet talk" going on. Odds on this odds on that, very little in the way of actual information. In the spirit of Sky, the odds of me watching this tosh? Hmmmmm about the same odds of Lord Lucan riding Red Rum to a Grand National win on Mars!

  • Comment number 43.

@Feldybhoy I've seen some of the current sky program, they do flog the sky bet stuff a lot, its shocking, I wonder why Tony Jardine said Vettel wouldn't win when he was romping away with the title???

  • Comment number 44.

@41. Just watched it, he was wrong about almost all of it. And is that a little Bias towards British drivers I see in there too? We wouldn't get that with the ´óÏó´«Ã½.

the ´óÏó´«Ã½'s F1 coverage is award winning, and something they should have been proud of, certainly pround enough to keep it. and as pointed out at singapore the locals there would rather have our coverage than their own. given the choice I'd watch F1 on any channel, but next years option is pathetic in comparison.

No to Tony "i'm as dull as joy riding a Maxi" Jardine

  • Comment number 46.

Probably trying to get people to bet on other drivers. Ive noticed that Sky "pundits" do alot of this. If one team is odds on to win something the "pundits" will claim that there is x and y reason that they might lose and that its still worth a punt on z. I might just be paranoid but everytime I watch football or boxing on Sky they always give alot of reasons that the favourate might lose! Or it might just be that Tony Jardine knows very very little about F1! Lol

    No to Sky!

  • Comment number 47.

Nice to see my other comments are being removed, if this continues I will be forced to take legal advice.

  • Comment number 48.

Tony "charisma King" Jardine is a legend. The guy knows nothing about what he is talking about but what annoys me most is his conviction. He is always adamant that he is right even though what he is saying is questionable.

I'd rather have Derrick Warwick present it, at least he knows what he is talking about and doesn't talk with a tone of voice that implies everything he says is FACT, and not open for discussion.

On second thoughts, Plankton or pond weed is more interesting than Tony "Blinky Bill" Jardine.

  • Comment number 49.

So has it been confirmed Jardine will be part of sky's line up next year?

  • Comment number 50.

I dont mind the NO TO SKY every week, and the continued protest - that does not bother me - what does bother me are the lame attempts at humor - oh i can see the pictures but the content must be on the sky page ha ha - GROW UP !

good choices Luizzi ! YES TO SKY !

  • Comment number 51.

Sorry to continue with the off topic discussion but SKY germany losing F1 is a shame for 1 reason. No more Tanja for Martin to flirt with on the grid. Other than that great that Murdochs rotten empire is losing F1.
I know Ill be cancelling my licence fee come the final race this year, I dont watch enough on TV besides F1 for me to keep paying it and who wants to watch highlights?

  • Comment number 52.

its sad that all everyone talks abut now is the bbc/sky deal (i am against it) it would be nice to know a real reason for them ruining formula 1 for loyal fans, also reasonably good choice by liuzzi

  • Comment number 53.

    79 French......I was there!!!!!,
Great finish, poor circuit to view at,went three times, said each time i would not go back.
But Gilles still my all time great driver.
Will wait for full details from bbc on next years treats, what is shown live, how other will be shown, then look at freesat box,i have a second dish on side of house,so it could point a little different way to now.........

Good choices by Liuzzi, hopefully we will see more of this feature next year - any idea of when the coverage details will be announced for next year, Andrew? I have a recurring nightmare of our coverage next year being fronted by Keith Huewen and Tony Jardine, with the corporate side of John Watson thrown in for good measure.

  • Comment number 57.

    @51.Kryten

It's only a rumour based on the proposal to drop their interactive features for the rest of the season, the very same interactive features Sky UK will be trying to sell their coverage on ... Only 2.5% of Sky Germany F1 viewers ever try them out.

  • Comment number 58.

Excellent choices though we have had them before. Monaco the end of '82 is always suprising nomatter how many times I see it though! Does seem a pity that the full ´óÏó´«Ã½ archive is being overlooked for repeats but its still an excellent feature. Do hope it sticks around for next year. Will be just about the only ´óÏó´«Ã½ F1 worth watching.

    no to sky.

To people saying 'No to SKY' - how about 'No' to you. This is about classic F1 races. If you still ain't happy with the ´óÏó´«Ã½ then write on a piece of cardboard and stand outside their building. But obviously you prefer to do your shouting from behind a keyboard.

    Grow up.

I have Sky but I have so many passionate F1 fan friends that do NOT I have to say I think it is terrible to put it on pay TV ....... perhaps it could be justified if you could have a full motorsport programme to explore ie WRC . DTM. Nascar ect but no you have to subscribe to ESPN for WRC another £10 a month consequently we are paying for a lot of golf, cricket and football we are not interested in ....... hmmmmm ´óÏó´«Ã½ what are you thinking :( it would be far better to let it go to channel 4 or 5 you have had amazing awesome coverage up until now but frankly I think you are letting the motor sport loving public down now shame on you ...... I am sorry I did not want my first post here to be negative but what choice do you leave us ?????

Big massive NO to Sky despite the fact I will be alright

I think Sky should pay ´óÏó´«Ã½ etc to go on the satelite out of their vast profits filling the funding gap
who would have Sky without ´óÏó´«Ã½ etc

I just don't get it. The whole Sky/´óÏó´«Ã½ deal smells a bit funny to me. You'd like to think these people were listening wouldn't you? This Classic F1 feature seems to have been put out to pasture as well with the same races featuring on a regular basis. Good races they may be but a bit of variety never hurts. With the exception of some of the smug people who have Sky already, I've not seen a good word said about this "deal". But I fear for F1, that it will fade away like the boxing, tennis, golf, football, etc. Shame, was bloomin' brilliant while we had it.

YES to sky. Roll on to there committed coverage in 2012 after ´óÏó´«Ã½ totally sold us sports fans out!

  • Comment number 69.

    Good choice for the races.

Re Sky/´óÏó´«Ã½ it's pritty obvious that apart from the races declared the rest shown on the ´óÏó´«Ã½ will be the ones in the wee hours of the morning as Sky will want races that can be watched in the pubs.

Tretcherous deal and disgrace that no-one on the coverage will address this. I guess they're all sniffing around sky for big money deals and don't want to harm their chances.

It's a BIG topic and the fingures in ears 'la-la-la-we-can't-hear-you' approach is a pigging disgrace. I already have my German decoder and am ordering the satalite dish. Thanks a bunch for making me have to fork out for it, you bunch of muppets!

You can shove sky where the sun don't shine (that a better tag for you?)

I am finding it hard to comment on classic races when I said 'great choice' last week to Webber. I see the logic of the choices, but it's looking like an empty excercise now.
I grew up watching them with Murray, followed Graham, Nigel and Damon, and all through the Schumacher years. Glorious.
For those who are interested, a very short businessman has commented that he will 'put a stop to that' when questioned about fans listening to 5 live whilst watching an 'alternative' broadcaster, and also RBS have published some crazy monetary/viewing figures praising the 'coup' S*y have pulled off. And it talks about nine races on ´óÏó´«Ã½ now, not ten. It has started already, watch the gods fall........

This blog is not the most suitable place for protesting. Apologies if you fing my pointing that out to be inconvenient, but it doesn't really qualify me as a WUM.

@ BritishRacingGreen_No_To_Sky. You are able to speak your mind as a licence fee payer. The ´óÏó´«Ã½ hold consultations and provide means to submit feedback and complaints. I suggest that if you explored those legitimate avenues of commmunication there would be no need to waste your solicitor friends time. As for your removed comments, I'm sure the ´óÏó´«Ã½ can justify it. It's their house, so their rules apply and they are clearly published for everyone to see.

    Morning Troll..

Four F1 races to go on ´óÏó´«Ã½, make the most of it, its F0.5 for 2012

    No to F0.5

Thanks for the highlights as always ´óÏó´«Ã½

Its been a bit of a sad week, the last WDC we will all get to see properly for some time, So few people seem interested in getting sky (or have sky) in the F1 world, I really fear it will harm the sport.

Teams aren't going to stick around if no one is watching. I blame the ´óÏó´«Ã½ quite a bit for letting this happen but its also Bernie's fault. Is he trying to destroy F1 before he retires, make it look like he was the only one who could do it.

The deals a disgrace, NO TO SKY.

Power to the 6million F1 viewers

i know iit wont change anything but can someone tell me when the beeb are up infront of the politicians over this? as i very much doubt ill hear whats gone on here in the bubble of bbc world

  • Comment number 84.

No to highlights, no to selling the fans out, no to getting into bed with the Murdochs, no to blocking FTA deals and screwing over the license payer.

The sooner this deal is proven to be illegal the better.

    No to Sky!

News Corp' owns just under 50% of Sky Germany.

They even boast about it on their website, and the owning of BSkyB (Sky UK) and Sky Italia, and Rupert Murdoch is Chairman of the Board & Chief Executive Officer.

@79 - good point, fed up with this blog being a board of no to sky posts ! be good next year when this lot are not watching and wont have to put up with them !

Hi Andrew! Thanks again for this and to Vitanio Liuzzi. Will try and watch tonight on Freeview between practices - my computer doesnt load video well if at all while using accessability technology! The 1979 French, 1982 Monaco were before my time while Japan 1989 i would of been too young for so these will definitely be a good watch! The other two i have seen but happy to watch again.Do struggle to keep up sometimes with just highlights though but maybe just me??Also wondered if any of the F1 fans here have seen this /blogs/aboutthebbc/2011/03/delivering-quality-first---exp.shtml as on that blog ´óÏó´«Ã½ promise not to make any cuts including to sports rights without public consultation first and would be transparent.Sorry for this bit if class as off topic Andrew.Feel free to delete but really i think F1 fans should have a chance to see what the ´óÏó´«Ã½ said publically and judge for themselves in the cicumstances in the ´óÏó´«Ã½ went against that with F1.Best wishes and again thanks for classic F1!

I've not seen a good word said about this "deal". But I fear for F1, that it will fade away like the boxing, tennis, golf, football, etc. Shame, was bloomin' brilliant while we had it.
    -------------------------------------------------------

Of course Football, the game that faded away, do they still play it these days?

  • Comment number 91.

Does anyone know of any F1 DVDs of old races that you can buy? Maybe compilations of the best races but so I can watch them in full?

    Yes to RTL with 5Live

    Tweet from Jake:

Seems #bbcf1 is globally famous. Signing autographs whilst walking around with a driver is just embarrassing, every country seems to watch!

    Not next year they won't!!!

  • Comment number 93.

From next year Formula 1 will be known as Formula 0.5

Yes to Formula 1 on the ´óÏó´«Ã½
No to Formula 0.5 on the ´óÏó´«Ã½

As for viewership for F1 the Sun did an article on Football and since they switched from PPV to FTA in asia they saw an increase of over 11% immediately and profits jumped accordingly due to the extra exposure it received, How Bernie can not see this is just proof he is due for the glue factory :)

    Don't forget

Thanks to Liuzzi for the choices. Very good ones at that, even if repeats.

Still echoing everyone else's comments - No to Sky!

The ´óÏó´«Ã½ are shameful in not even acknowledging the pages of complaints here!

Yawn ............. Get over it ........

  • Comment number 96.

@95 The short answer is "no".

The longer, more detailed answer is "not until we have found out the plans for coverage, not until we have seen if the deal is legal, and certainly not until the ´óÏó´«Ã½ at least acknowledge the annoyance and betrayal felt by loyal fans".

  • Comment number 97.

@ SirAdamOfWarburton. What you really mean is that you and the other unhappy bunnies are going to carry on mewling like children because you couldn't get your own way.

Great classics Tonio, still amazed by Alonso's pass on Schuey round the outside of
130R, Schuey looked broken straight after. While we're talking about classic F1, which are your favourites...

Excess Baggage - Classic F1 blog quotes: part I

    1) "seems to me like a gross distortion of the facts and a massive over-simplification

to claim the ´óÏó´«Ã½ is only showing half a season of F1."

    2) "In your eagerness to patronise me, you appear to have overlooked something quite fundamental. Luckily for you I was able to use my knowledge and prowess (sic) to work it out on your behalf."

    3) "Sky taking the rights could be the best deal Bernie has ever done."

    4) "I'm not going to repeat myself anymore because all my pleas and reasoning will be ignored anyway. "

    5) "This next bit of advice is in no way meant to patronise you or come across as
    sneering or condescending, but "

    6) "The ´óÏó´«Ã½ haven't axed F1. They will still be showing it."

  • Comment number 99.

I also love the ZX Spectrum graphics in the Monaco 82 classic programme...

Excess Baggage - Classic F1 blog quotes: part II

    7) "if I've managed to counter some of the incorrect assertions just enough that one neutral fan now stops to think with their head rather than their heart, even if just for a second, then I'll feel I've achieved something."

    8) "I should point out that empty threats of ASBO's and jail sentences won't work with me."

    9) "The matter of disrespect pertains to the en-masse spamming of the ´óÏó´«Ã½'s website output"

    10) "the Concorde Agreement is super-confidential. Personally, I doubt it even exists."

    11) "Your stance of watching F1 via internet streams probably won't affect Sky and will likely make even less difference to the overall scheme of things. That's because you will still be part of the audience"

    12) "But of course, I could be totally wrong about all of that."

    ;)

@95 as you are on a F1 blog I think it would be safe to presume you are a fan of the Sport? if so do you not realise the damage the SKY deal will do to the sport in the UK?

Sky work on numbers and numbers only, if (which they will not) they don`t attract enough new subscribers to justify the F1 expenditure they will like other sports demote it's importance and considering the ´óÏó´«Ã½ can only show 0.5 of the races it will damage the sports following and ruin it for all in the UK.

Just to note I have SKY and Sports yet I am dead against this deal for the interest of the sport I have watched since being a kid (with my dad) and now watch with mt son and grandsons.
