On a cold December day 2 months ago I witnessed something happen that I'd been dreaming about since I was a Teenager. After spending years watching Top Of The Pops, The Chart Show, Jools Holland etc I was fortunate to not only see, but (co) present a Desi version of those famous shows.

Missing In Action On MIA’s Tour Bus

  • 16 Jan 08, 10:38 AM

When M.I.A came to Birmingham recently, I made up my mind to get deeper inside the Sister’s head. After watching her progress over the last few years from PR/Art terrorist with beats, to the genuine article in 2007, I realised I knew nothing about the person behind the bass-line.

Friction wins Sony Gold...

  • Mark Strippel
  • 1 May 07, 02:20 PM

Congratulations to Bobby Friction and the Friction programme team on an important night of success for Asian Network at the Sony Radio Awards.
I'm extremely proud that a show that we launched barely one year ago came through with the Gold . 'Friction' was designed to be not just a platform for unsigned British-Asian music but an absolute open door for new listeners to investigate some of the most exciting new musical trends being created right now.
We have some of the best Specialist Music programmes anywhere on radio and will continue to build on a growing reputation.
Here's to the team behind our winning entry: Bobby Friction, Reju Sharma, Meera Patel and Assistant Editor Khaliq Meer.

New Project for Rishi Rich

  • Bobby Friction
  • 27 Apr 07, 02:57 PM

This HAS to be the biggest British-Asian music story of 2007. 大象传媒 Asian Network decided to get in contact with Rishi Rich after recent rumours concerning his departure from Record Label and Management company 2 Point 9. Rishi issued a first statement exclusively to us.

Why is this such a big story? Rishi Rich and 2 Point 9 have been responsible for most of the major highlights in our scene over the past few years, so it will be interesting to see how both of them move on from this. Will we now see a completely new direction from Rishi, and how do you think 2 Point 9 will move forward and push the major talents that they still have signed to their label? Will we start to see Rishi making bigger steps into the Indian music industry or will he turn his attentions towards the States as rumoured? These two parties reinvented the game.

I'm sure we will now see moves from both camps over the next few months, but I want to know what YOU - the bloggers, blogoids and blogdesi's - really think about this situation. Maybe it will just be business as usual, or whether this will spark a frenzy of musical activity and inject some added creativity into British-Asian music over this summer.

Read the Rishi Rich statement in full, and post your views:

The USA is on its way, but just doesn’t know it yet...

  • Bobby Friction
  • 6 Feb 07, 04:12 PM

The USA is on its way, but just doesn’t know it yet. My tour of the States – The British Invasion Tour – was as the name suggested all about another British music Invasion along the lines of the Beatles or the Sex Pistols, but as I found out the dominance of Brit-Asian acts over there may slowly be coming to an end.

Back In The UK innit!

  • Bobby Friction
  • 9 Jan 07, 04:25 PM

Hello Peeps,
Touched down from Delhi late yesterday after 3 and half weeks in India.
On the music side it was very interesting. After 3 years of Brit-Asian artists and albums releasing out there, something's definitely seeped through into Bollywood. Nearly all the new movie tracks by year end had what my ear can define as a vague British sound. Not that anyone there admitted it. Bollywood devours everything in it's path and co-opts like a monster but I could definitely hear it. The largest films by year end were (in ticket sales and in popular opinion) Rang De Basanti, Omkara, Lage Raho MunnaBhai and Don. All of them pointing towards an interesting future for Bollywood, all for different reasons.

Asian Network Uni Tour Kicks Off!

  • Bobby Friction
  • 14 Nov 06, 04:57 PM

The Uni Tour 2006 kicked off last Friday night at Nottingham Trent Uni's Student Union, where we broadcast the show live on the Friction show. It was a homecoming of sorts for me as I studied at Trent in the early (ahem!) nineties. The line up for the night was Me, D-Boy & The Playback Project (feat. Sharifa Shi & Rabbia), Lyppicool (Nottingham’s Best Beatboxer and a serious talent), Raxstar, DJ Kayper & Inja, The Mentor Kolektiv plus The Specialist.

The Best of British

  • Bobby Friction
  • 3 Nov 06, 02:09 PM

From the late sixties when Sergeant Pepper fought for cultural space with Ravi Shankar, to the UK Bhangra explosion of the 80’s to Talvin Singh 's Mercury Music Prize victory in the 90’s, our nation's relationship with ‘Asian’ music has always been a one night stand; its cultural importance relegated to a quick fumble under the sheets, not full lights-on-scream-out-loud passion.

John Peel

  • Bobby Friction
  • 16 Oct 06, 10:13 AM

John Peel to me was the ‘Truth’ pure and simple. When you look back over your teenage years you remember just how passionate, truthful and heartfelt all your emotions were about friends, politics and especially music. As you get older things get in the way and start chipping away at the edifice until you find yourself in a position where you wish you could hear and feel music or life like you did back then.
