Pic Of The Day: Walkman Nostalgia

The gentleman in the picture is Roland Allen. Roland is one of those people who makes the ´óÏó´«Ã½ a pleasure to work in. His job title is Head of Technology Liaison, which means that he spends a lot of time educating people across the ´óÏó´«Ã½ about technology and kit.

He is holding up a Sony Walkman he found which is (gasp!) twenty five years old.

in twenty five years. The functions are the same, but podcasting is already changing the way people listen to ´óÏó´«Ã½ programmes.

Roland is in charge of The Blue Room, based in the Broadcast Centre and full of shiny kit of all eras. But he and his team are also going to be roaming across the UK in the next few months spreading the word.

And we hope he will have the time to share some of that on this blog.

Thanks for this. No offence but what is your point?

Another ´óÏó´«Ã½ promo for its downloads? (I don't mind the downloads - just the endless promoting of them).

Whilst I am sure Mr Blue Room is a nice man I am struggling to understand the point of the post?

I work on film effects technology in Hollywood and over the years have enjoyed reading about the ´óÏó´«Ã½'s involvement in the development of early television. Here's hoping ya'll are willing to go back a tad farther than 25 years to get to more of "the good stuff".

Head of Technology Liasons; that sounds like a great job! Two of my favourite past-times are studying new technologies and telling people about them in layman's terms.

It's unfortunate that most techies and geeks speak only in jargon. I'm sure some of the greatest things ever invented have languished in labs or sat unbought in warehouses because their creators cant explain their use to the public.

Hello W Tree - the point of Pic of The Day is to give people a little taste of projects, people and the atmosphere in ´óÏó´«Ã½ Future Media & Technology. Also to brighten up the blog with some pictures.

If there is anything you'd like us to take a picture of, please do make a suggestion.

Just 25 years ago the Walkman was cutting edge technology. The story goes that one businessman was shown a prototype and said "Why would anyone want to carry a tape recorder around in their pocket?"

To today's i-Pod generation the question would be so irrelevant as to lack any meaning.
