Interesting Stuff 2009-03-20: ´óÏó´«Ã½ Trust Approves ´óÏó´«Ã½ Online Budget
The ´óÏó´«Ã½ Trust has approved the ´óÏó´«Ã½'s budget for 2009/10 including the budget for ´óÏó´«Ã½ Online. From the Trust's press release:
Following the Trust's review of bbc.co.uk and consideration of the necessary management controls, the Trust has been able to agree an increase in ´óÏó´«Ã½ Online's budget of £30.7 million over three years, subject to certain conditions set by the Chairman to the Director-General which we are publishing today.
This is significantly less than ´óÏó´«Ã½ management originally asked for. The Trust considers that investment at this reduced level is appropriate. It believes that ongoing robust evaluation of the ´óÏó´«Ã½'s impact on online markets will be necessary to ensure that public value is created by the investment.

Initial impressions are extremely good, but the general question did strike me - can the ´óÏó´«Ã½ really afford to maintain this level of extravagant provision? I do accept that the old Radio 4 site was in need of overhaul, but it 'did the job' in its cheap and cheerful way. My associated concern is about the resource implications for programme teams who will no doubt be expected to produce more information for their respective web pages, and I would hate to think that programme-making budgets are being eaten into because of 'web admin' duties. Does a part of the increase in ´óÏó´«Ã½ Online's budget of £30.7 million get deployed to station programme teams? How is this resource thing apportioned?
