´óÏó´«Ã½ iD on message boards on 15th December

Post categories:

´óÏó´«Ã½ iD, the new system for signing in to ´óÏó´«Ã½ blogs, boards and communities will be deployed on all ´óÏó´«Ã½ message boards from Tuesday 15th December.

´óÏó´«Ã½ iD has been in use on the ´óÏó´«Ã½ iPlayer messageboard and Strictly Come Dancing messageboard for a while. If you've used these or a ´óÏó´«Ã½ blog you will already be using the new system.

From next week if you use a ´óÏó´«Ã½ message board you will be prompted to upgrade your account to the new system if you haven't already done so. The process of upgrading will be smooth and easy.

If you're a new reader and don't know what ´óÏó´«Ã½ iD is, Ian explains here. There are also for ´óÏó´«Ã½ iD.

Also do use comments on this blog to give feedback.

I know this is sort of off topic but as there hasn't been any open-blog posts of late...

Nick, how can we go about complaining about persistent "comment-spammers" and those who have inappropriate user-names, surely there should be ways to complain at the account level and not just at the individual comment level?

  • Comment number 2.

An interesting question Boilerplated, although as you rightly say off topic.

What do you mean by an "inappropriate" user name?

This account for example: userid=14242028, very unlikely to be the person most people first think of...

Also, as an example of persistent "comment-spam", please review the average content of this users contributions to any 'debate': userid=14083297

I take it this will be announced on the messageboards as well as the blogs? With a quick outline (in laymens terms) of what will be required of the poster on sign in switch over.

  • Comment number 5.

    What Giz said.

Not a lot of point announcing it on a blog when it's about messageboards!

  • Comment number 6.

"Not a lot of point announcing it on a blog when it's about messageboards!"

    I agree :)

  • Comment number 7.

    re comments at #5 & 6:

I don't, just as people will - should - access their ISP's relevant page(s) to stay informed of important updates etc. for example, this blog is the place were service announcements are made (and that fact is stated clearly on the messageboards home page) - if people can't be bothered to read this blog (they don't need to comment, if they don't want to) then they can't complain if they find that they don't know what is occurring.

  • Comment number 8.

I think most ´óÏó´«Ã½ online users have their one or two places that they regularly visit and are not really aware of what else is out there.

Certainly during the POV "open dialogue" (sarcastic quote marks) hardly any POVers were aware a discussion was going on on many many blogs, and the biggest response to the "dialogue" (ditto) was, unsurprisingly, when a thread was posted about it on the TV Board - where most POVers exclusively hang out.

We have the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Board over at POV where announcements of an admin sort are generally made.

I can't see anywhere here /dna/mbpointsofview/ where it says go to blogs for any admin info.

  • Comment number 9.

Boilerplated there are plenty of people who use the messageboards exclusively. Who have never, and will never visit blogs.

Many of them have the messageboard pages stored in their favourites, and go straight there. Why on earth should they go looking for information about messageboards anywhere else?

Please remember that some people still find this whole internet thing a little bit overwhelming, and human nature is to stick with what we know. Service announcements should really be made on the service to which they refer.

So by that logic the ´óÏó´«Ã½ should have to make this announcement in every single (active) message-board thread, think about it...

  • Comment number 11.

I HAVE thought about it boilerplated. Not every thread, just one announcement on each board.

They did it the other week about the 30 characeter names thing. All they have to do is tell each host to do one message for their boards. It's this sort of thing that the hosts are there for.

It really isn't hard, but it IS considerate.

  • Comment number 12.

    Again, what Giz said.

Surely it's a) bad customer service, b) pointless, and c) counterproductive to announce changes where most people won't see the announcement?

    You said;

    [quote]
"Many of them have the messageboard pages stored in their favourites"
    [unquote]

How will that help those who have - as you pointed out - bookmarked a thread that they are reading/contributing to? Duh!

"It really isn't hard, but it IS considerate."

As is reading this blog, considering that the message boards home page makes a point of advising people to monitor the content on this blog...

  • Comment number 14.

I think Giz meant that some folk have bookmarked their messageboard (POV, the Archers, whatever), not individual threads.

Very few of us go to the main ´óÏó´«Ã½ Messageboard Homepage.

I just Google ´óÏó´«Ã½ POV and go straight to the POV pages from there.

Anyway, our Host Lucy has now set up a couple of threads for us re this new D-Day. So thanks, Lucy :-)

So what stops them bookmarking this blog...

"Very few of us go to the main ´óÏó´«Ã½ Messageboard Homepage."

I never go to the ´óÏó´«Ã½.co.uk homepage, if I thus miss an important announcement (and thus are left playing 'catch-up') it's my problem and not the ´óÏó´«Ã½'s, if I don't visit the 'Market Data' pages should I expect the ´óÏó´«Ã½ to post the data here for example? Why should those who use the message boards have their hands held, are you really suggesting that those who use message boards are some how are not as 'able' as others?!

  • Comment number 17.

So what stops them bookmarking this blog...

Knowing it exists for a start!

As to your other point: why should people who only use messageboards go anywhere else on this site?

One of the things that came out of the POV fiasco was that many messageboarders don't like blogs. They don't use them. So they won't seek them out.

But none of that really matters. The point is that information about msesageboards should be posted on messageboards It's logical, for one thing - that's where most messageboarders go, that's where the information is pertinent and will be well received. By posting the info here, as can be seen, the response is severely limited! It's just courtesy and good customer service to address the audience where the audience actually is, rather than expecting them to find you via some Internet ESP or something.

Would you go to a ´óÏó´«Ã½ messageboard to read about changes to a ´óÏó´«Ã½ blog or h2g2?

Make one wonder how they found the message board(s) in the first place...

  • Comment number 20.

Maybe they typed POV or The Archers into Google ...?

If the ´óÏó´«Ã½ blog home page suggested that I should, yes...

  • Comment number 22.

I wonder how many people get to their ´óÏó´«Ã½ messageboard of choice via the Messageboard Homepage.

    I certainly don't.

  • Comment number 23.

So what stops them bookmarking this blog...

Because they are messageboard users not blog users. How would they know that there was a blog about the messageboards if they do not use blogs?

It's like the train station advertising changes to the bus service.

Besides there is a thread on the messageboard now (thank you) so I shall step away from this blog and leave you here to chat with the next passer by. :-)

...and Haddock is £10 per Kg!

The message board homepage directs users to this blog.

"It's like the train station advertising changes to the bus service."

No, it's like a whopping great notice in the booking hall or ticket barrier of a railway station advising people to check the timetables for train alterations, those who climb over the wall onto the platform do so at their own risk of getting on the wrong train...

  • Comment number 25.

Boilerplated, once again - not everyone (I would guess very few, in fact) visits the Messageboard Homepage - ever, let alone regularly enough to pick up messages about blogs.

  • Comment number 26.

"this blog is the place were service announcements are made (and that fact is stated clearly on the messageboards home page)"

Where is the message boards' Home Page?

I keep a link to bbc.co.uk Help which has a list of all the boards. I didn't know that there was anything else.

  • Comment number 27.

Here's the one I know of, flea /messageboards/newguide/messageboards_a-z.shtml

Although I can't see anything about needing to go to blogs for information anywhere on it.

  • Comment number 28.

That's the page 'my' Help page leads to too c-A. I can't see anything about a link to a blog either so I thought I'd missed something.

There's still no message on The Archers board - the only person informing us at the moment is alsdouble!

  • Comment number 29.

Maybe there's another Messageboard Homepage we haven't found ...?

Another poster suggested The Archers had already gone over to the new system as some posters over there had had problems logging in last week. I haven't noticed any change at all ... anywhere ...!

  • Comment number 30.

I don't think the Archers board is on the new system. I think I've done what I need to do but I guess I'll find out on Tuesday!

That is their problem then, it's like complaining that the ´óÏó´«Ã½ never report any news about Scotland when all one ever does is read the English news pages!

If people were suggesting that this information should have been placed prominently on the message board homepage they might have had a point but to expect the ´óÏó´«Ã½ to place the same message on multiple message boards is plain silly - anyone would think that the average message boards is someone so helpless that they need their hands held all the time...

Well it was there yesterday, been replaced by the 606 boards banner now!...

    No, it's good customer service.

And, seeing as that is what has happened, I guess the ´óÏó´«Ã½ disagrees with you!
