There's a press release on the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Press Office website that has some numbers for iPlayer over the last year that you might be interested in. Some of the release's headline statements include:

  • ´óÏó´«Ã½ iPlayer celebrates second birthday with record numbers reaching 88.2 million requests
  • Top Gear most watched programme of the year on ´óÏó´«Ã½ iPlayer
  • Figures reveal popularity of ´óÏó´«Ã½ shows by device
  • New data suggests that people take ´óÏó´«Ã½ iPlayer to bed

You can also see the use of iPlayer on mobile by time of day which is where, I imagine, the last statement comes from.

From the press release: "In an interesting insight into how people watch ´óÏó´«Ã½ iPlayer, new figures also reveal how people love to watch ´óÏó´«Ã½ iPlayer on their mobile phones with big peaks in traffic post 9.00pm, and again on Saturday and Sunday morning, suggesting that the nation is snuggling up with their favourite ´óÏó´«Ã½ programmes from the warmth and comfort of their own bed."

I'm curious - these times match *precisely* the periods where internet providers (incl. mine) tend not to throttle traffic. That led me to think something - about how many of these "mobile" users are actually using devices like the iPhone/iPod Touch to access these files through a local wi-fi network.

And how many of those mobile downloads are by children in bed?

Rether than constantly changing things without testing them - putting broken links all over the ´óÏó´«Ã½ site, BTW - why not concentrate on making existing features more widely available?

Allowing downloads of radio programmes would be trivial to implement and would reduce the pressure on whoever has to clean up and produce podcasts manually when your automated routines fail, as they do so often.

I have been downloading most of my ipods on to my pc and if need move it to my mobile phone for watching on train or other times that I am not at home.

My self I find it to be a good service and look forward to more.

Do you have any figures on the amount of programmes that are uploaded on iPlayer but are watched by zero people? What's the most high profile upload to watched by so few?

What a great anniversary of a top product offering from the ´óÏó´«Ã½. I have to say . Top Gear most watched programme of the year on ´óÏó´«Ã½ iPlayer comes up really well on it.

It's only the iplayers second ? I thaught it had been around a lot longer. I am one of these people who take iplayer to bed. I have sky tv set up in my front room and we watch this all night until we fancy heading up to bed. We have a laptop which floats between downstairs and our bedroom. The only reason we started taking it upstairs was because my partner watches programs on iplayer till we drop off. We find the connection a bit iffy sometimes but we know this can be a number of things.

Where is it going in the future?
