Evolution of the 大象传媒 homepage
You may also find James Thornett's post about the 2011 大象传媒 Homepage beta of interest - inserted Ian McDonald 21 Sep 2011
Last week we launched a new version of the 大象传媒 homepage at . At first you might think seems pretty familiar, with its modular customisable layout. But take a closer look and you'll notice we've made a number of significant improvements.
Let me start by providing some background on why we released this new 大象传媒 homepage beta. Back in May 2008 the 大象传媒 announced plans to build a new service-oriented architecture, to help us scale our products and services, keep up with ever evolving web technologies and to deliver new features more quickly. The 大象传媒 homepage is one of our first sites to be moved to this new infrastructure.
Initially we planned a simple 'lift and shift' of the current homepage to the new platform. However, since we had to completely rebuild the homepage for the new architecture, it would have been remiss for us not to deliver some new features and improvements to the site.
The first improvement you'll notice on the beta homepage is the introduction of a new navigation bar across the top of the page. With the new navigation bar you'll get easier and faster access to the most popular sites across the 大象传媒. If the site you're looking for isn't listed, simply choose from the 'More' drop down menu, or type what you're looking for in the Search box.
Very soon this navigation bar will appear across the entire 大象传媒 web site - not just the homepage. In order to fit the most popular links onto the navigation bar and allow for consistency across all 大象传媒 web sites, we had to keep its overall size down. As a result we have (somewhat controversially) removed the clock from the 大象传媒 homepage header. We've already received feedback from some users who miss the clock, but rest assured we are working on a clock module to be released soon, which you'll be able to add to your personalised version of the homepage.
One of the strengths of bbc.co.uk is that we have depth and breadth of online content. But it also creates a challenge, as we have too much content to try and fit onto the homepage all at once. The new Media Zone is a promotional area at the top of the page that showcases the range of content, and helps users discover more of the 大象传媒. Simply roll your mouse over the thumbnails to scroll through the content.
Two key themes for our online team's product releases over the coming months are "Personalisation" and "Now", allowing you to tune your 大象传媒 experience to the things that you're interested in, as well as showcasing what's happening across the 大象传媒 at that time.
In terms of personalisation user testing showed us that while people liked the ability to remove, rearrange or add widgets on the 大象传媒 what people valued more was finer-grained personalisation of content within those widgets. So, for example, the updated music widget now lets you choose your favourite music genres and it delivers the latest matching music programmes.
We've also introduced several features to give you a better sense of what's happening across the 大象传媒 right now.
On the 大象传媒 iPlayer widget there is a new "Just In" feature that allows you to see programmes as soon as they become available in iPlayer. Another key part of the "now" proposition is the introduction of Topic Tracker, a new widget we're trialling which gives you a unique way to keep up to date with the topics you're interested in.
Topic Tracker allows quick and easy access to the breadth of 大象传媒 content tailored to your personal interests - from your favourite shows to hot topics and stories. Simply click on an image from the hot topics, or search for your own favourite topics. Then select the best match from the list provided and you're set to get frequent updates on your interests.
In the example shown, I'm tracking Barack Obama, Lewis Hamilton and Kylie Minogue. So when I return to the homepage I see the latest 大象传媒 content on each of my interests. In this case I've got the latest news articles related to Barack Obama and Lewis Hamilton, but there have been no new stories about Kylie Minogue in the past 24 hours.
You can expand or collapse the number of stories you see using the arrows next to the topic name. The topics listed in Topic Tracker are provided by our Search team. At the start of this year, we told you about enhancements to our site search, a consequence of which is that we can start to bring more relevant and up to date content to other 大象传媒 sites.
Topic Tracker already offers more than 11,000 topics from across the 大象传媒, and we'll continue to add more topics over time. One of the benefits of Topic Tracker is that we'll be able to see the most popular topics across our audience, allowing us to create a real-time zeitgeist of the hottest topics, as determined by our users.
The new beta homepage also includes many design tweaks which you'll find makes it faster to load and easier to use. For example the iPlayer and Music module carousels now use simple left and right arrows to scroll through the carousel content. The addition of time stamps for the top news stories shows you the latest updates at a glance, and we've used a refreshed colour palette to simplify the page experience.
These visual changes are not actually part of the new global visual language (GVL) that we announced last month, but certainly stepping stones in that direction. As the GVL evolves we'll be looking to incorporate more elements of the new visual language on the 大象传媒 homepage.
Finally, the new technical architecture we mentioned at that start of this blog post will help us deliver many more improvements across all of our online products and services. In future you'll be able to seamlessly roam your personalised 大象传媒 homepage across all your devices. For example you'll be able to add your favourite football club to Topic Tracker, and then see your same favourite topics on your mobile phone, office computer, and perhaps one day even on your TV courtesy of services like .
We've made many other smaller improvements to the homepage, and the new platform will allow us to continue to deliver new features more quickly and easily. Try the new and tell us what you think.

Ok, so they've ordered you to get some valid and credible website visitor metrics - data that can be passed round the Beeb's marketing departments (and to help determine where more easily to make cuts/layoffs in website content/maintenance). That, I can guess was the overall, No.1 reason for this new 'tool'. End of. That's where the whole topic started at that very first meeting - not, lets put in 'something really useful for users'...
But then, you did sort of redeem yourself, with this... 'One of the benefits of Topic Tracker is that we'll be able to see the most popular topics across our audience, allowing us to create a real-time zeitgeist of the hottest topics, as determined by our users.'
But, I've a feeling that's rubbish isn't it... (Boy, wasn't that a lovely example you gave too - one 'news' story, one 'sport' and one 'entertainment' item - just in case we hadn't got the idea of how it might be useful to us...!! The variety, the choice..!!). How many topics are you actually allowing any one visitor to track, at any one time..? Is it going to be 11,000 and counting..?
I'm (probably) getting much more topics than this already, across the entire 大象传媒 output... But I can just tell somebody, somewhere, is itching to make some shavings/cuts of that less popular material... (soon to be 'proven', because 'the metrics' will tell you so). Yep, lets just cut it all back to the real, popular stuff only...

We've always liked it, but going full width will make it much more powerful and presumably give you more creative freedom.
However, I'm not sure the overall composition of the page will be as striking, the feature-box was eye-catching because it was consistent with the rest of the boxes on the page but still leap-out at you.
It was a distinct content area that has a real 'wow factor'. Now that you plan on separating it out, it might not be as bold, maybe just an overgrown banner that blends in with the header :(
Currently a content box sits alongside the feature-box / Media Zone at the same vertical level, this forces you brain to conclude it is part of the news and the other content. Now it stands alone, full width it might be easier to dismiss.
But, if you guys currently have too much content and not enough space then I suppose this is a good move. I do see Tommy's point however that this made lead to more scrolling.
The addition of a drop down navigation bar is a smart move, it enables quick section-switching which is something I do all the time. I usually end up going back to the homepage and drilling into a topic/section from there. So this will definitely save me a few clicks.
Well done 大象传媒.

Regarding saving your homepage customisations, right now your changes (like moving modules or setting location) are saved locally to your machine via a cookie. Whilst generally this works ok, this method has many limitations and means you鈥檙e not able to roam your settings between different machines. So to enable saving and roaming of your homepage settings we鈥檒l be taking advantage of 大象传媒 ID, which my colleague Simon Cross blogged about last week /blogs/bbcinternet/2010/03/why_did_we_build_bbc_id.html. However, this is quite tricky for us to implement so don鈥檛 expect 大象传媒 ID available on the homepage in the short term. But it is definitely a development priority for us over the coming months.
Also, it is good to hear your thoughts on Topic Tracker. As this module鈥檚 functionality is quite different to the rest of the homepage, we certainly need your feedback to understand what鈥檚 working and not working with the module. Based on your comments, plus the beta feedback coming in, we鈥檙e working on a couple of improvements to Topic Tracker.
First off, we鈥檙e working on making the list of hot topics more dynamic. Right now the hot topics do not update very frequently, so we鈥檝e got a bit of tuning to do to better represent the zeitgeist. We also know that only a limited number of topics are available (right now it鈥檚 about 13,000 topics), but we will continue to add more content over time.
Also in response to your feedback we are currently working on a clock module, so for those who really miss it, they鈥檒l be able to add the clock back onto their homepage fairly soon.
For those asking about blogs, for now we鈥檝e put this module on hold. The current blogs module on bbc.co.uk has a few problems 鈥 not all the 大象传媒 blogs are available, and some of the blogs coming through the 鈥榝eatured blog鈥 section of the module are out of date or not updated regularly. Instead we are planning to get 大象传媒 Blogs coming through Topic Tracker, which will give you more flexibility to pick the blogs you are interested, rather than relying on us to program the blogs into a separate module.

First off, you've abandoned one of the optional shades of blue for several rather more garish choices for the homepage colour (in fact, all the colours seem either fluorescent or drab). Secondly, there seems to be a lot of wasted space on the beta homepage. Why is the navigation bar so tall but the text of the links so small? Obvious answer because of the 大象传媒 logo but why not at least increase the font size of the links on the navigation bar. Also, if the 大象传媒 logo dictates its height what not make it slightly taller still and include the clock - or is that a no-go because it's to be used across the 大象传媒 and will therefore be impossible to code for various international users? Also, the media panel is not nearly as effective as on the current homepage, where it is taller and more attention grabbing, with the options running along the bottom rather than the side. With the tabs at the side you have an enormous amount of wasted space. Finally, I don't like the white-strip at the top with 'Text only', 'Mobiles', 'Help' etc. It looks better with the colour banner running all the way to the top.

The beta homepage is currently resetting each time you refresh or visit the homepage, which means you will lose your customisation or location settings. We are working to fix this asap. Thanks for your patience.

I have up until now only used the beta homepage as an option, it is now the default.
I have not read all the other comments, so I do not know whether this has been commented upon, (you are inviting & have received some comments about topic tracker) but I am getting a 403 access denied when using the search option on the topic tracker.
My intention was to see what I could do to setup tracking of some of the blogs, as that is a module that was removed , and the homepage faq suggests using topic tracker instead.
Anyone else having access denied problems on topic tracker search ?
(And it may be coincidental but my browser seems to have slowed down on the new bbc homepage)

I note the moderators appear to have hidden one of your posts, from your own blog! maybe you should have a chat with them.

I suppose this blog is now destined for obscurity, no one will ever find or track it or you !
In message 53 I mentioned Topic Tracker Fault access denied error 403 I am pleased to say it now allows me to search, however how do I follow the recommendations to set up topic tracker for blogs ?
Take for example this '大象传媒 Internet Blog' the search will not recognise that as a title. The suggestion is to follow the Author!
Well that hardly helps, without a crystal-ball when the authors are multiple & unpredictable, and even you Jo Wickremasinghe are not even listed as far as I can tell.
Neither for that matter are many other authors, take for example Alan Ogilvie and RadioLabs blog
Surely the topic tracker need the blog titles and blog authors added to the searchable index, along with the sub topics / tags ie in the case of this particular blog beta & homepage. Beta of course does not show up in this context on the topic tracker search.

2. I NEVER watch Eastenders. I wish that the i-player did not always have it as it's first option. I have tried moving the icon to a different picture but it always goes back to Eastenders when I next look.

My comments are
1 I often listen to Radio4 live on the i player- why does the site always revert to Radio 1?
2. Do we always have to have Eastenders as our suggested i player viewing? i have tried moving it but it always goes back
