Today the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Trust published their interim report on the ´óÏó´«Ã½'s Strategy Review. Here are selected extracts about what the ´óÏó´«Ã½ does online:

"...a future where the ´óÏó´«Ã½ will have two distinct online functions - iPlayer will have an important role providing on-demand radio and TV-like content while ´óÏó´«Ã½ Online should also remain a publisher of distinctive, original public service material for the web. We agree the first step should be to simplify the existing content on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Online and to strengthen editorial control of its future development."

The 25% cuts in ´óÏó´«Ã½ online's budget looks certain to happen:

"We conclude now, in line with the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Executive's strategy proposals, that there is a bigger challenge for Online - to cut back on the current scale and scope of what is published and put the focus on those areas where the ´óÏó´«Ã½ has a clear and distinctive role to play."

But the report says more detail on how and where is needed.

The Trust stresses the importance of access to content for users:

"Get ´óÏó´«Ã½ services free at the point of use, in ways and on devices that suit them"

Simultaneously the ´óÏó´«Ã½ published its annual report.

I am looking forward to the list of "!those areas where the ´óÏó´«Ã½ has a clear and distinctive role to play." but on the web there is always someone doing what you want to do so this won't leave much.

Here's an eg. If the ´óÏó´«Ã½ licensed (for money) say four or more competitive site to handle Music and allowed them to charge and or take ads (the model is magazine publishing) this which both enlarge the distinctive role and and earn a bob or two...

The Trust made a mistake with Education Material it should have used a similar model

"Get ´óÏó´«Ã½ services free at the point of use, in ways and on devices that suit them"

    Pity about the DRM then.

I won't hold my breath, but I can at least allow myself a glimmer of hope that the Trust will in the future be open to arguments that the ´óÏó´«Ã½ is over-reaching in its attempts to close iPlayer off from Free Software - and hence from any non-discriminatory, free market generally (given that the ability of people to be able to develop Free Software clients is a key litmus test of such), seeing as how the Trust itself raises the issue of universal access. To quote:

    • Distribution – what it should mean for ´óÏó´«Ã½ services to be universally available as technology changes. What the implications are for the different platforms the ´óÏó´«Ã½ is involved with, the way it shares its content with other platforms and the future deployment of archive and other material online

    • Boundaries – the ´óÏó´«Ã½ must not retreat from serving any particular audience groups. But we think that boundaries need to be clearer and better expressed for the outside world and will want to consider further how to achieve that

So in other words... ´óÏó´«Ã½ Trust sees iPlayer more important than content on the website. Does this include the news site?
