Fall Out Boy - 'This Ain't A Scene, It's An Arms Race'
When it comes to long song titles, no-one can beat the bands who came out of the emo thing (see, FOB fans, I didn't say they ARE emo, did I?), but the one thing you couldn't really pin on them was to what degree they like to put the pop into their pop-punk.
Too little, and you're into atonal scree territory, which is great for that crucial NO-SELL-OUT credibility thing, but can be a little wearing on the ears. Too much, and you're Simple Plan, you've done the theme song for the new Scooby Doo cartoons, and the punk bailiffs are knocking at the door to take their word back.
And so to Fall Out Boy, a band who excite passionate responses from lovers and haters alike. But who've not troubled the traditional pop fan overmuch, what with the lack of sass and slink in their hit tunes so far.
But suddenly everything has changed. It might be the influence of their label boss Jay-Z. It might be that they're a talented band who can turn their hand to more than just the one idea. Or it might be that Patrick Stump had a really good new riff and melody and wanted to take it as far as he could.
But whatever the reason, Fall Out Boy have gone away kings of their own sector of the musical world, and come back with a brilliant, BRILLIANT pop song (with a kick-ass punk chorus), with which they will invade everywhere else.
I'm serious. Nothing the band have done till now is as good as this, because the shiny pop production and melodic curlicues and stomping beats and instant appeal of the verses, welded to the hectic ramalam and helium shrieks of the choruses is the musical equivalent of a Happy Meal. You get meaty rock, sweet pop, a little fruit (no jokes, FOB haters, I meant like apple segments or something) AND a toy which will give you many minutes of pleasure.
And best of all, THIS Happy Meal really IS made from the best quality ingredients, and the toy won't break as soon as you get it home.
Yes, that's right, you guessed it...I'm, ah, lovin' it...*shameface*
Released: January 29th

PS: Did I mentioned the ChartBlog interview with Patrick Stump much? All the time, y'say?
