Gwen Stefani - 'The Sweet Escape'
Phew! Finally Gwen seems to have realised that, yes, How Do You Solve A Problem Like A Maria? is over and, no, she didn't win. Not that we didn't all enjoy her crazy yodelling adventures in the Alps, but we're also quite glad that was a one-shot thing rather than a permanent new direction. We shudder to think what she might've done to 'Climb Ev'ry Mountain'.
( Windows Media Only)
Now she's gone back to what she does best, namely cute pop songs that sound like they've wandered right out of the '80s and yet don't sound especially dated. There's an overly sweet chorus beating away at the heart of the song that threatens to cover the whole thing in sucrose, but it's kept in check by some high-speed verbiage from Gwen and a funk-laden and a toe-tapping guitar riff.
What's most surprising about this is that Gwen's brought in Akon...to stand in the background and ad lib once or twice, wearing a big sign that says "I Am Second Fiddle" and spending the rest of the time going "woohoo! yeehoo!"
It seems a little bit wasteful as guest appearances go, but let's just be thankful she's not put him in lederhosen and got him singing about his favourite things, eh?
Released: February 26th
