Joss Stone - 'Tell Me 'Bout It'

Post categories:

Fraser McAlpine | 15:11 UK time, Sunday, 4 March 2007

Joss StoneAbsence from the land of pop is a funny thing. Sometimes it's not until someone makes a comeback that you realise how much you missed them. Conversely, often it's not until someone comes back that you realise just how much you didn't really take full advantage of their being gone. Sigh. We're missing the Jossless days already.

We don't like to be unrelentingly negative about things, so we'll say that her new red hairdo is quite exciting. Certainly more exciting than this song, which is depressingly formulaic and - ironically - soulless. It has that whiff of a song that was written primarily in the hope that it might make the soundtrack of a soft drink commercial, with the alternate existence of being an actual pop single being plan B.

It would be foolish of us to suggest that Joss doesn't have a mighty pair of lungs on her, but we wish she'd put them to better use than marblemouthedly scratching her way through the verses before caterwauling her way through an ear-shatteringly screechy middle eight. She's picked up an awful lot of habits in her time away. We wouldn't be surprised if she's started picking her nose too.

On the plus side, it is mercifully short. But you can't help listening to it and wondering what happened to that nice, carefully-deployed voice everyone loved on the Soul Sessions album, and precisely when it turned into this giant honking catbeast. :(

Guys you seem quite down on Joss Stone at the minute....deservedly so. I heard her sing the song on Radio One last Friday and was bored to tears....I used to like her.

Maybe someone should tell her to return to the land of her accent.....

I'm not a fan; but just because i don't like the music doesn't mean i cant recognize a pathetic bandwagon blog when i read it! get off her back already the anti-joss thing is getting very old and very weak so perhaps its the author of this drivel that should try and write something that isn't depressingly formulaic and - ironically - soulless.

[Yeah Steve P! Fancy having out-of-date opinions, and airing them in public...HOW DARE YOU! - Fraser]

Its not poor Joss stone to blame, although one might say she has been easily lead. Joss had the potential of turning into one of the greatest soul voices ever to come out of Britian. Why did she feel the need to adopt an American personality. Joss you dont need to go to America to adopt a better soul culture. You already have it. My advice is to ditch your advisors and get back to what made you successful. You have been listening to many wrong people just trying to kiss up your a**. Get a grip Joss and come back, get your Bristishness back and listen to your public who made you famous in the first place, and rightly so because you have an awesome voice.

Oh dear Joss, what has happened? You used to soothe us with your beautiful soul music, gospel singers and all. Now apparently you've decided unoriginal R&B is the way forward. This an putting on a fake American accent. It's rather depressing, I very much enjoyed the Soul Sessions, but this; not so much.

There is a reason you became popular, and it's because you were a 17 year old girl from Brighton who had a powerful voice and sung beautiful songs. Go back to that, this is a pile of crap to be completely blunt.

    It's made for america - it's a different market. That being so - I don't think it's that bad a song!
I say this while being hesitant of the new album, but can't help looking forward to it ! . . . loving the hair!!

yes the american attitude thing is really annoying...so is the accent.

Nick, Joss is from Devon not Brighton!

This track may not be the best ever, but it's not horrible as you make it out to be.

Plus you can't really compare it to the Soul Sessions, it's completly different.

She's also said that this album is the first one she could do the way she wanted.
Give the girl some time to find her place before you go stamp it as bad.

I saw her live in London on tuesday, and you know what? Joss easily walks allover every other female artist out there atm.

Maybe you just thought it would be fun to, as someone said already, get on the bandwagon of dissing Joss.

Oh yeah, and anyone who says something about her hair and clothes, you're just jealous because you can't pull off something "outrageous" and still look amazing doing it.

I think her attitude stinks and her gig recently was appauling. Ho hum, I guess she should stay in her new loved USA and let us who love our roots remain a Joss-Free-Zone.

Yeah, I know she's from Devon, I guess I just have Brighton on the mind! Still, Joss has strayed so far away from her English roots it's embarrassing. She's really gotta realise what she became famour for, and that was doing SOUL music, not Crap n B

I went to school with Joss and she is nothing but a fake!!!! The way she has percieved herself from the begining is all faluse!! She should be more down to earth like her sister!!

Her first song was good but since she has become even mor stuck up and gone down hill!!!

Maybe she needs to go back to Ashill the village she grew up in and get back to reality!!!

I love Joss Stone, i grew up listening to all of her songs, and they have helped me get through different situations, being bullied, facing decisions and growing up. I truly believe her songs have helped me get through situations in life, like many songs do. I think Joss Stone has an amazing voice. I also think that sometimes people forget how difficult it is to grow up- facing different crowds etc and being influenced by so much around us. Joss has shown us so much soul- and ok, her new songs are slightly "O.T.T", but she's only expressing herself. If she were to be painting a picture, imagine what her painting would look like against others. She's unique, brave and a confident person and I just think that people should respect that- she's singing about love- more than what others are singing about xxxlove to Joss, Charlotte- 16 years old
