Just Jack - 'Glory Days'
Why...could it be? Is it that summer's on the way already? The strident perk of this song seems to think so, as it goes down rather smoothly with the handful of nice sunny days we've had lately. This is the kind of song I'm expecting to hear pouring out of everyone's windows while they pose and doze in the sun. Well, the kind of song I hope to hear, anyway.
If Robbie Williams is reading this (we know he's a big fan), this is how you do a convincing rap while sounding bored, to give off the air of being far too cool for - well, everything. Please throw 'Rudebox' into the bin and study this closely for the next few weeks. Actually, even if you don't listen to this, throw 'Rudebox' away anyway, for all our sakes.
Lyrically it's kind of a more savvy take on Lily Allen's 'LDN', essentially being about how there might be a lot of crap around on a particular day but you end up with such an overwhelming feeling of awesomeness and possibility that you forget the crap and focus on the good stuff. I particularly liked the line "I know I'm caned, but now I'm feeling able" - probably not quite as clever a gag as he thinks it is, but still snappy all the same.
It's catchy, it's cheery, it's swaggery, it's sunny - frankly, it's just ace. It's got 'Spring Hit' written all over it. (It's not as catchy as 'Summer Hit', I grant you, but I can only be slavishly accurate to the scientifically determined start of the seasons. If you've got a problem with that, you'll need to take it up with someone far more important than I.)
