A Knight's Tale
You know how sometimes you think you know someone, and you think you know all you NEED to know about them, and then they change something about themselves...it could be a new haircut, it could be a new hat...and suddenly it's like you've never even met them before, even though it's also clearly the same person you've always known?
Well, that's what's happened with Beverley Knight. She's always been an ambassador for British R&B, and possessor of a fine pair of singing lungs, and that seemed to be enough to be getting on with, right? Well, clearly not.
For her new album 'Music City Soul', Bev took herself off to Nashville, gathered together a bunch of musicians from the golden era of soul music, booked them into a house-cum-studio and proceeded to tear the roof off the sucker with her voice alone. Startling isn't a big enough word, frankly.
Seriously, check out (Windows Media only). You could use that voice to strip the floorboards with...
So impressed was I with Beverley's astonishing new vocal abilities that I broke a key ChartBlog rule and rang her with a list of questions about her new material, and what it was like in the studio. Seriously, her voice is THAT good.
What I expected: Even though Beverley is famously one of the nicest and most enthusiastic people in the whole of pop, a blow-by-blow account of how she recorded her new album could possibly have become a little - what's the word? - dry? Technical? Boring?
What I did not expect: A grand piano in the kitchen, or was that where the guitar was?...the best flapjack you will ever hear...plus Beverley disses up her entire back catalogue (in a very nice way, obv)...

I must admit, a small and entirely illogical part of me hoped this was about Heath Ledger when I saw the title. I'm not sure why though since the only thing I can remember him singing is Can't Take My Eyes Off You in 10 Things I Hate About You. Anyways..
She does sound very enthusiastic, nice and chatty. Sounded like she coulda gone on for the entire interview on one question! I shall need to listen to that song when i get a chance.
By the way.. Dude!! More Sugar??!!
[It was either him or Simon Cowell and Simon Cowell gets enough attention already, don't you think? - Fraser]
Ach I don't mind Simon. He's harsh but he doesn't apologise for his opinion or make excuses for it or for whoever it's aimed at. Paula does that in American Idol and it drives me bananas.
Got the album today, it's fantastic, one of her best by a mile, her vocals are spot on. Especially love her cover of 'Ain't That A Lot Of Love'.
By the way nice site, I love the design!
[Thank you kindly! - Fraser]
what a beautiful voice but she needs a really good song ...she has yet to find that
