Sophie Ellis Bextor - 'Me & My Imagination'

Sophie Ellis BextorIs Sophie Ellis Bextor approaching music from a different angle to everyone else? I only ask because once again she has come out with a song in which the melody seems to run backwards, and I can't work out why. I mean it's not like there are strict musical laws which dictate which way a series of notes should run for maximum effectiveness, not ones you should take more than a passing interest in, anyway. And yet here's Sophie's latest, and it seems somehow to defy the fabric of reality itself.

This, plus Sophie's unique voice - part silk cushion, part scorched lizard - makes taking an objective view of her work quite a feat. You can't compare it to other forms of pop music, cos the basic formula is so altered at a genetic level it'd be like trying to establish common DNA between a mouse and a smell.

But then, there's the disco strings, the 'Groovejet' chunter-guitar, the four-to-the-floor bass drum, all of which are common currency in pop-loving dance music. So there's plenty of familiar stuff to hang on to, and because of that, it's almost possible to dismiss a tune like this as being a retread of one or two of the Bextor golden oldies.

But then there's that snake-with-a-head-at-each-end melody, all strange twists and kinks, and the fact that the producers of this song have thrown odd little sound effects onto Sophie's voice so that sometimes she's purring in your ear and sometimes there's four of her coo-ing at you from a nearby windowsill.

There's so much to take in and process that by the time you've got everything straight in your head, the genius of the song itself suddenly becomes plain and the tune seems to have started going forwards again, all by itself.

All of which points to there being witch-blood in the Ellis Bextor family tree, frankly. But you can't tell her that, [coy teenage boy] cos she's LOVELY...*blush*

This is the second song from the new album 'trip the light fantastic' and this album is shaping up to be a classic.
'Me and My Imagination' is a fantastic song really, a bit of difference. There are not many female artists that get 8/9 previous singles in the top 10. This song is so very catchy and deserves a lot.

Okkay. Well it's not something I'd choose to listen to. Not because it bad, it's good enough.. I think I'd just need to be a couple vodkas down on a girls night out to fully appreciate that.

It could have sounded stronger at the start for me anyway though. Maybe it was the fiddly voice bits that threw me off there. They sound great in some parts later on but a bit odd in others.

That sweetheart of a man you love so much is going to be on Jonathan Ross in a bit. I was gonna try stay awake for it 'cause I keep missing it these days but I'm totally falling asleep :P

[Gwan, go sleep. You've worked FAR too hard this week to stay up and see...who is it?...surely not....it's Rik Waller, isn't it? - Fraser]

You calling Jonathan Ross Rik Waller?!???

[I wasn't, but why not? I called Kerri Rik Waller the other day and that went BRILLIANTLY. People seem to really like being called Rik Waller. I shall starting doing it more often.. - Fraser]

    Hmm!

    Poor Rik

My neighbours car alarm is going off and I think thy're away. How long until I can legally throw a brick at it?

[If they're away...do it now and tell them you did it in a couple of hours from now. But I never said that. And nor did the ´óÏó´«Ã½. Plus - poor Rik nothing. The man's an arrogant so and so, and grumpy to boot. - Fraser]

POOR RIK?!?!?!? poor kerri dont you mean :'( have my anti-cupids been getting at you yet fraser?!?!?!

[You make it sound like you're doing voodoo. Don't do voodoo on me, Kerri. It's not nice. I didn't say you were Rik Waller, you said you were the anti-cupid, and he seemed the least cupidy person I could think of. Then you went feral...again. I tell ya, that MCR song about teenagers is BANG ON THE MONEY... :-) - Fraser]

Gosh Fraser, way to sound like a grumpy old man! ;) Awesome song though!

I used to watch Sabrina the Teenage Witch and they had an awesome cupid, he was just totally skinny and wore one of those nappy things and he had bad hair. So that's what I think of every time I think of cupid now :P

aww im sorry, of course i wouldnt do voodoo :) all that stuff is a load of rubbish anyway...but you did say i was rik waller '[You're Rik Waller? EW! - Fraser]' so dont try denying it! :P i dont think he could be an anti-cupid anyway unless his wings were very strong as i doubt they could support his weight. when ur on about teenagers i hope your refering to the references of becoming out of touch with teenagers rather than the columbine ones! and i dont want to scare the living s**t out of you :( i need a slap sometimes, before i get carried away...hmm, ohwell, its only having a bit of a joke... :)

and its ok kat :) i watched sabrina the teenage witch too! well, the originals, then like everything else it all changes and she went to college or whatever and it all went bad and rubbishy

I quite like Sophie - there's something really quirky about her. I didn't love the song until it came on in a club and was obviously really loud - then you realise just how great it is.
