Kelly Rowland ft Eve - 'Like This'

Kelly Rowland"Ladies and gentlemen!", a man says as the drum machine is given a warm-up shake, "Kelly's back...". And the you have to admit that the evidence is hard to argue with, here's the second most famous member of Destiny's Child doing what she does best, talking about how smashing she is and how rubbish her ex-boyfriends are. Slightly more mysterious is why Kelly should choose to make her return to the public eye with a song which uses as a refrain a half-speed version of one of the best songs by her old band...

Oh don't worry, it's not like she's sampled 'Bills, Bills, Bills' or anything sad like that. It's more that there's something oddly familiar about that chorus thing she does.

"Told y'all I was gonna bump like this
Y'all didn't think that I could bump like this
Said I told y'all I was gonna bump like this
Turn around then I make it jump like this"

It's not a million miles away from

"Girl I didn't know you could get down like that
Charlie, how your Angels get down like that
Girl I didn't know you could get down like that
Charlie, how your Angels get down like that"

is it? And there's bits in the song where I was half-expecting an amazing vocal breakdown, where choirs of squeaky cherubs create a multicoloured shower-curtain of interwoven voices, all going "Child of des-ti-neeee" while someone who sounds a lot like Beyonce Knowles takes her voice and stretches it like a rubber band on a shoebox over the top (and I do mean 'over the top').

Sadly no such thing happens. But there is a very fine rap section from Eve about "dudes" who are jealous of "a chick with dough", and some nice flicky finger-drums which totally disguise the classic-ness of the classic hip-hop beat which underpins this whole gloopy affair.

But, once you've got 'Independent Women' in your head, everything suddenly seems weighed down by the leaden tempo and general lack of urgency, and then, well, it all grinds to a halt, really. Having said that, a few extra BPM and hey presto! You've got yourself a ChartBlog-approved hit on your hands, lady.

Welcome back, by the way...
