Siobhan Donaghy - 'So You Say'

SiobhanWhat is it you people want, exactly? Do you want your pop music to be entirely ruled by television events, brain-scathingly bad cover versions and an endless parade of American dream-team duets? Or would you rather have the one thing the rocksnobs are always wittering on about - a self-contained talent who writes her own songs blah blah - in the form of an attractive young lady with icicles in her voice and a great big buzzard on her head?

It's the second one, isn't it? Especially as the first one isn't really going away anytime soon, so why not plump for the best of both worlds?

So, given all of this, the fact that Siobhan Donaghy is not being hailed right now as some kind of pop visionary is becoming more bewildering with each passing second.

While her former Suga-bandmate swans around the Top 5 with her Lenny Kravitz sample and her mirror-kissing song of self-appreciation (and quite right too), Siobhan's solo career has failed to set the world on fire in the exact same way that the Pacific Ocean has failed to set the world on fire.

And given the evidence of songs as good as 'So You Say', the only possible reason why this should be the case is that you, the record-buying public, are mean. She gives you the sound of dignified heartbreak in song form, you give her nothing but indifference.

It's almost as if, for some reason, you've taken against Siobhan and her ability to conjure the spirits of our lonely forefathers with her voice alone. Maybe it's superstition, maybe it's a fear of the unknown. Whatever it is, you're wrong.

Now c'mon, you've heard the song, isn't it time to get your cash out and support Team Donaghy? And if you've got any loose change, Team Ellis-Bextor might appreciate a pat on the back too. Anything else you find at the bottom of your purse is all yours, naturally.

Yes, yes and yes - and it's been ages since a soap 'star' tried a pop career, so could you try and gee one of them up a bit.

    Thanks.

Good song. Good singer. Nice Album. I think the only thing this song lacked was some decent promotion - that music video was barely seen anywhere. Anyway, good luck to Siobhan in the West End.
