Sonny J - 'Can't Stop Moving'

Sonny JLook out of your window, go on. Now go and stand outside with no coat on for 30 seconds and come back to me. You there? Right, then I'll contin...hang on, Tim in Salford hasn't quite got back yet...TIM! TIM! Oh here he is. Right, did you notice anything about how you felt? If you felt a bit chilly and/or wet and perhaps slightly depressed without really knowing why, that'll be because it's autumn. You can tell it's autumn partly because of the dead leaves on the ground, partly because you're back at school/college/work and your summer holiday has been and gone, and party because...well...it's September, dammit. That's where autumn lives.

So there's really no excuse for a man whose name sounds like 'sunny' to release a song like this on October 8th. It's not like he can't have KNOWN what kind of a climate his sunshiney hymn to warmth and light would have to exist within. Amimals are starting to think about HIBERNATING and here's Sonny walking around the forest in shorts and a vest, fanning himself with a sheaf of dock leaves.

And I'm not stretching the music to fit it into my climate analogy here either, from the soaring strings to the '70s cowboy film brass, from the helium vocals (which are apparently NOT Michael Jackson back in the day, but sound like they could be) to the Karen Carpenter chorus, everything about this song says it's a beautiful day outside, birds are singing, bees are buzzing, spiders are measuring web angles and flies are looking nervous.

If you need musical reference points, well the Avalanches did this first, and the vocal is pure Junior Senior. But that's kind of by the by, what we have here is pure vitamin D in music form, only without any of that tiresome nonsense about ultra-violent rays and tractor 50 sun cream.

PS: Docked one star simply because it's going to become nails-on-a-blackboard irritating once TV producers start to use it as backing music to all of their sports footage.

    Single of the summer!

Although, I have yet to see ahousing estate where the schemies are so bright, shiny and happy. Unless someone mixed some shrooms up with their horse, and then mixed it up in a litre of Sunny D.

    Hey, there's an idea...

[Well if it is, it's a REALLY REALLY BAD idea. - Fraser]
