Mark Ronson ft. Amy Winehouse - 'Valerie'
Or "F*** IT, VALERIE", as this particular song was venomously introduced when Amy Winehouse played it at the Eden Project over the summer. Back then she was a bit lost, and bit frazzled, somewhat tetchy and incredibly keen to finish the concert so that she could get this glaring, staring audience out of her itchy face.
And now the self-same song is being released as a single to promote Mark Ronson's album of high-quality '60s soul makeovers of modern song. Weird, eh?
Truth be told, it's hard to reconcile this skippy, tumbledown Motown retro-raveup with the well-documented Troubles Of Amy Winehouse. There's just so much life and glee within each finger-clicking moment, it surely can't be the same person whose Jekyll & Hyde approach to health and vitality issues consists of drinking strange potions, falling into a transformative seizure and then rampaging around as if possessed by the spirit of The Drunken Sailor.
Surely something this unashamedly chipper can't have come from the scary, dark underworld where pop stars become stick-thin dishmop-headed deathwishes for the pleasure of hard-nosed pigs in pap hats? Surely that's not a song by the ZUTONS??
Oh, seems all of these things are true. Maybe those rumours about the restorative qualities of popular song are true after all...

Well, I suppose it's better than anything else off the pantsworthy Ronson album, but scarcely worthy of La Winehouse.
And it doesn't hold a candle to her cover of 'Cupid' on the Radio 1 covers album that may or may not be out by now. I'm hoping the former because otherwise I'll be hiring a defence lawyer.
Love it.
If all of her songs were like this, I think she'd rock. Especially as I sing it to my ginger friend!
