It's Five N00bs Friday!

Fraser McAlpine | 17:31 UK time, Friday, 25 April 2008

Happy Five N00bs Friday CardIt'd be nice to have your own public holiday devoted to exploring the musical output of five new artists, from very different musical backgrounds, wouldn't it? All over the world, people could put aside the time to broaden their musical knowledge, and to explore new sensations, from a wide spectrum of musical thought.

Trouble is, unless the greetings card manufacturers are on board, it's not going to happen, and I can't see them unveiling a new range of Happy Five N00bs Friday products any day soon...

...so we'll just have to go it alone. Who's with me?

Here are your Five N00bs Friday Five N00bs

N00b 1: Operahouse - 'Diane'

You might remember the review we ran of their last single 'Born A Boy', but even if you don't, check this out, because this lot seem to be twisting trad-indie into new shapes without losing grip on the idea that songs that people can hum are still artistically valid songs. Plus they do nice harmonies, and I like nice harmonies.

==================================

N00b 2: Brit & Alex - 'Let It Go'

Two girls in a group together...sexy party tunes...lots of crazy energy and drama...hmm, sounds oddly familiar. Oh hang on, they're twins! They're TWINS! That's how they're different from, say, Ali & AJ or Electrovamp, OK? That plus they've got someone burping the refrain to their song, which is sonic innovation right there...

==================================

N00b 3: May7ven - 'Hands Up'

Someone in the marketing department for this artist is clearly having a hot head day.

I'm going to try very hard not to linger on the name, which doesn't work. You're supposed to pronounce it May Seven, but if you're skim reading it, your brain renders it down to something like Maysven, and if you stop and pronounce the number properly, it's May Seven Ven. Which makes B*Witched look like grammatical correctness gone mad.

Anyway, you'll NEVER GUESS when this single is out...May 7th! Which is great for this one song, but what happens when it's a hit? Do we wait a year for the follow up? C'mon marketing people, think things through!

==================================

N00b 4: We Are The Physics - 'You Can Do Athletics BTW'

BOYS! BOYS! LAY OFF THE RED BULL AND GET SOME SLEEP ONCE IN A WHILE!

Oh, and you should SO collaborate with We Are Scientists, that would rule!

==================================

N00b 5: Eugene Francis Jnr - 'Beginners'

Now, the thing you need to know is that this video here - with the drunk angel cowboy in a vest - isn't for Eugene's new single 'Beginners', which is out on April 28th. It's for his song 'My Own Pollution', which is coming out as a single in June. His album is called 'The Golden Beatle', and I don't believe he means Ringo.

==================================

Now, go out and spread the glad tidings about Five N00bs Friday, and who knows, maybe next time there'll be enough interest for a Five N00bs Eve too.

    I quite like the Eugene Francis Jnr song.

    Going by this and the Dan Le Sac/Scroobius Pip song from the other day (/blogs/chartblog/2008/04/back_of_the_sofa_dan_le_sac.shtml%29, it looks like the current must-have accessory in the music video world is angel-wings...

    And try to incorporate running around on a beach (there are LOADS of videos with that at the moment, aren't there?)

    While I'm at it, beating up televisions seems to be a popular activity, too (oh, and wearing them - back to Scroobius Pip and co).

  • Comment number 2.

    In regards to May7ven, I was thinking about the whole when are they going to release the second single. And I came to the conclusion that they would indeed have to wait a whole year to release it, OR, they could always change their name depending on the month they choose to release it in. So, next time they could be Septem7ven, which I personally think is even better.
    Well, they'll have to do something anyway otherwise they'd lose the slight novelty edge and then have absolutely nothing going for them.
