The Wombats - 'Backfire At The Disco'
First there was panic, then there was backfire. I tell you, I am NEVER going to a disco again, they sound like terribly dangerous places. Mind you, you'd probably expect there to have been more of a panic AFTER the backfire than before. Unless whatever it is that caused the panic also went on to cause the backfire, like something so terrifying it caused an instant bowel evacuation by everyone present. That would certainly cause panic, even if the terrifying thing suddenly went away again.
(Thanks to MTV2 for taking the swearing out!)
So, to the points of interest...
1: This song has a great chorus. It's about as deep as a small puddle, but who says you need to be meaningful all the time?
2: I do like a song with a decent story in it, and isn't it nice to hear of a night out in a club environment in which the singer doesn't end up meeting a freaky girl who just wants to do rude things all night long? Would it be too revealing of my own life to say that this seems truer to what actually happens when people go dating? I mean you all probably have the Flo Rida experience all the time, but some people do not, and this song is for them.
3: Having said that, maybe the people who don't have the Flo Rida thing happen for them are keener on his song because it doesn't rub their own sexual rubbishness in their faces, and offers them a glimpse of a whole other fantasy world. Thankfully the Wombats have got chirpiness on their side, or the unlucky-in-love could get really angry. They've already got enough pent-up frustration without Liverpudlian fun-indie (fundie?) rockers reminding them of their own inadequacies, after all.
4: This song is for putting on when you're on the way out of the house, excited at the promise of the day ahead (or night ahead). It's like a sugar-rush in song form. It won't last, it's not massively nutritious, and it'll end up making you hyperactive and antisocial, but when it hits, it feels GOOD!
5: Sometimes you don't need to spend money to make a good video. This is one of those times.
