Kelly Rowland ft. Travis McCoy - 'Daylight'
Oh come on, Kelly, that's not fair! You know, Smokey Robinson once sang "a taste of honey is worse than none at all", and although he was singing about a one-night stand and not you, Kelly Rowland (or honey), his words have taken on an eerily prophetic air.
You went to all the effort to bring a massive '90s hip hop party jam beat, choir samples and all. Then laid on that Isley Brothers summery guitar, garnished with a guest rapper with something fun to say (about Paris Hilton) and a strong chorus that seems to really go somewhere...and then forgot to write a melody for the verses.
I mean you're a really good singer, Kel. You can sell the dreariest of old tosh, given half a chance, but that doesn't mean you can get away with this melodic freestyling. It's just weird. There's no rhythm to what you're singing, and although the words rhyme, they don't seem to sit well together. It's like a series of observations about how much of a night owl you are, all strung together in rhyming couplets.
Were you given the lyrics to another song, or perhaps a poem about staying up really late, and then told to just SING them and see what happens? And if so, did they not give you the chance to go back and have another go?
It's a real shame because this is a great song. Bubbling up with good vibes and positive attitude - much like your good self, Kellington - and sounding not unlike an update of 'I Love Your Smile' by Shanice.
But those verses! I'm not sure where the line is between performing a song and just singing words over music, but there clearly is one, and Kelmo, you're WAY over this time. Which means I've got to dock you one star. And I didn't want to have to do that.
Don't blame me though, it's all Smokey's fault. Him and his blimming honey...
