Kid Cudi vs. Crookers - 'Day 'N' Nite'
All you can ever really ask of a song is that it manages to stand out in a crowd. In some respects, this is actually more important than whether it's a good song or not, as there are no end of solid, well-performed, easy-on-the-ear songs being released all the time. If there is nothing about them which is provocative, ticklish, different or unsettling, there is nothing for the brain to interact with.
Unfortunately, there is a short cut which circumnavigates all of this, reduces your work-load by a huge margin, and possibly even brings you out ahead of the pack, and that is to make your magnum opus a) moronic and b) irritating.
This is a good case in point. There are going to be people whose gut reaction to 'Day 'N' Nite' is to pull 'durr' faces and dance about pretending to be simple. They will be appalled at the one-finger tinklesynth and squitty bassline, irked by the inconsequential lyrics and moved to outright mockery by Kid Cudi's deep, slow delivery.
(. Please do not watch if you are at all offended by the idea of boys daydreaming about girls in their underwear.)
They will probably claim that this kind of silly pap is taking up valuable brain-space which could be more usefully devoted to another single off the Duffy album, or a new band who have really good songs, actually, and they play real instruments (as opposed to surreal instruments, naturally).
Well, stuff them. This may sound like a song which has been artfully constructed to force idiots into buying it and rocksnobs into scoffing at them for doing so, but it is actually astonishing and great. And I will attempt to prove this using the following logic.
Logic Point 1: When the song starts, I tend to want to turn it up.
Logic Point 2: When the song is playing, I tend to find I'm a bit giggly.
Logic Point 3: When the song finishes, I tend to want to put it on again.
There, I think that just about covers it. Your move, Snow Patrol...
