Jack Penate - 'Tonight's Today'

Jack PenateFor the past month or so, every morning has posed a huge dilemma for me: no, not "do I really have to get up now?" (that's a given), but rather, "what should I wear?" Before you get worried, I'm not about to start banging on about my fashion dilemmas and turn this into some Vouge-type-article (and to be honest, I could never be that classy; 'Reveal' or 'Pick Me Up' is more my style). My dilemma is basically all down to the weather.

One minute it's sunny, the next it's freezing. What are we meant to wear? No matter how long I spend deciding, my decision will inevitably be the wrong one; I'll end up either sweating profusely on public transport (nice) or locked outside my work, freezing, because I've forgotten my pass.

"What has this got to do with Jack Penate's single?" you might ask. Well, EVERYTHING, I will answer (and in fact, have). Because since discovering his brilliantly summery new single 'Tonight's Today', my morning dilemma has been solved. Pop a bit of this song on first thing in the morning, and, like me, you'll totally be rocking the sunny look, regardless of the weather. Yes, mostly I am suffering for this choice, but it's worth it. Thanks to this song (and no thanks to the weather), summer is Officially On It's Way.

We haven't heard anything from Mr Penate in rather a while and if you can't remember any of his previous singles (doubtful I'll admit, after all, he was once the trendy indie kid), I'm not going to remind you of them. That's not because I'm feeling mean (promise), but because 'Tonight's Today' is so completely different to anything he's done before, you don't really need to know about it: this is the good stuff and it marks a new, exciting chapter for Penate.

This is Jack Penate's comeback single and boy, am I glad he's come back. It certainly is a breath of fresh air. As I've hinted at just a *tiny* bit already, it's so wonderfully reminiscent of summer; a time when, as Jack sings, "today's tonight and tonight's today"; where the days merge into each other and "the suns waves at the moon" (what a lovely, happy image). And that's just for starters.

This song is calming in an ambient, uplifting way; the perfect compliment to a lazy summer's day. Think the twiddley guitar and positivity of Vampire Weekend, combined with some dreamy vocals, plus a mixture of handclaps and en mass chantey singing, all of which creates a sense of belonging, of being together and of having fun.

The video contributes to this feel, there's bright sunlight, there's mad jumping around, there's quirky pranks and there's some crazy dancing that's totally not appropriate to the song - but hey! That's the kind of thing you do when you're in a good mood (or if you're me - all the time. My dancing is never appropriate). There's also a bit right at the beginning where Jack gets tricked into kissing a man with a moustache, which is reason enough to love this song, right? It's just an added bonus that the song itself is ace.

This is summer in a song and this is what radio needs, a well known name and face doing something exciting. You could argue that this is Jack jumping on the dreamy-vibey band wagon a la Empire of the Sun, but what does that matter when he does it this well? This is miles better than the Jack Penate we used to know and I, for one, am very excited. And to mark this moment and this excitement, I have a declaration I would like to make: Tomorrow, I am going to wear flip flops. In your face, cold weather.

    Now everyone take notice !!!!

This is how to relaunch yourself with a comeback single.

JACK has included the charms that made .TORN ON THE PLATFORM and SECOND MINUTE or HOUR hits , and he's added a summer vibe more synths and bettered his sound leading to a superlative comeback single.

Basically he has raised the bar... and included the most important thing... the chorus hook which is very memorable !!

This will be a top 10 single . I CAN HEAR IT .

OH VICKI talking of EMPIRE OF THE SUN..... WE ARE THE PEOPLE is released on MAY 4TH and is up there with my favourite songs of the year.

I just hope RADIO 1 get behind it because the song and video are a masterclass on so many levels...... have a word.... EMPIRE OF THE SUN are fantastic !!

It's true you know. I really cannot remember what Jack Penate did before. Was it something about a train?

TORN ON THE PLATFORM is the one I think you are thinking of JAX.

His album MATINEE got to NUMBER SEVEN ... but I predict a bigger splash for album number two.

He does love a good prediction or two, our Spirit.

I really liked the singles from the last album, but was never moved to buy the album itself (admittedly, I have music commitment issues. I'm seeking therapy). Not heard this one though.

So...um... maybe I'll just be quiet until I have something to say about it then...

Or you could look at the video - linked to from the review itself - then make your mind up about the song, and come back and tell us about it.

    It's OK, I'll wait ;-)

    HI AGAIN CURTAINS !!

yeah THE SPIRIT WARRIOR loves a chart prediction.

My favourite was going in to a well known bookmakers in 2007 after hearing an early recording by GLASVEGAS when they were unsigned.

I wagered an amount that they would have a top 5 album within five years.

They took a month to research that GLASVEGAS were indeed an unknown Scottish band who were indeed unsigned at that time and offered me odds of 50-1 of this happening..............

IN 2008 THE GLASVEGAS ALBUM ENTERED AT NUMBER 2 !!!!!

(BEATEN ONLY BY THE MIGHTY METALLICA WITH DEATH MAGNETIC )

Well with a huge smile I collected my winnings and the next day THEY stopped me making any further predictions !!! OH THE TEARS I CRIED !

I seem to have a good ear for knowing what will sell and what a lot of people will like about nine times out of ten. I SOMETIMES FAIL SPECTACULARLY of course ... but I am human.

Recently I GOT LADY GAGA THE NOISETTES METROSTATION AND THE HEAD SHOULDERS KNEES AND TOES RIGHT... but got LA ROUX wrong.

    SPIRITS LATEST PREDICTIONS :

CALVIN HARRIS IM NOT ALONE >>> TOP 10

JUST JACK EMBERS >>> TOP 30

LADY SOVEREIGN SO HUMAN >>>> TOP 40

    DIZZEE RASCAL BONKERS>>> TOP 5

JACK PANATE TONIGHTS TODAY >>> TOP 10

DOVES KINGDOM OF RUST >>>> TOP 30

CURTAINS.... lets see how they do.....

  • Comment number 8.

Cool Spirit. I'm not paying out winnings if you're right though.

Can't listen watch the video I'm afraid. I muck around on here at work, and no internet at home right now. So am just having to rely on the good judgement of Team ChartBlog. No pressure...

  • Comment number 10.

Ok, heard it. Not excited. Prefer the earlier stuff.

  • Comment number 11.

Hang your head in shame, Team ChartBlog!
