Kelly Clarkson - 'I Do Not Hook Up'

Kelly ClarksonSorry guys, you no longer have a chance with Kelly Clarkson. She's gone all Jo Bro on us, by declaring that she no longer 'hooks up' with anyone. She's slipped on the promise ring and is soon to duet with Demi Lovato on the Mickey Mouse Club (this is a lie).

Oh no, wait, I just listened to a bit more of the song... she does hook up, but she just takes her time with her relationships apparently. Oh no, wait, listened to a bit more... she does hook up, but just not with talented drunk boyfriends. Oh Kelly, what are you on about!?

(. Props to Kelly for being able to take the mick out of herself in the middle).

Not for the first time, I find myself listening to Kelly Clarkson, but not really understanding what emotion she's actually trying to convey. She just shouts. I thought for ages 'Since You've Been Gone' was a romantic song about how much she missed her partner. Not, as I discovered, a song about how relieved she was to be single (my girlfriend soon informed me after I told her it reminded me of our relationship...oops).

Musically this is same old, same old, from Miss Clarkson. More pop/wannabe rock. Not quite as good as 'My Life Would Suck Without You' and definitely can't touch 'Since You've Been Gone', but it ticks all the right boxes to amuse but not astound. It's the same low-key brooding verse that breaks into a shouty, catchy chorus with an even shoutier (fake word) bridge at the top of her range. But saying that, her choruses are the ones you can't get out of your head, in a good way, and that's why she remains so successful, the o-oh-no-o-u-up-u-up has been playing over and over in my mind.

It might just be me, but some of the lyrics makes it sound like she's singing, 'and if you want me Al Pacino'... hmmm, interesting. It's a decent song altogether, but until she mixes it up a bit and tries something different, I can't give more than three stars.

    I must say Kelly.....

There is a brilliant pop chorus in this song.

    Catchy and memorable...

    And I like the lyric.....

    I can't cook but I can clean.....

    The mess that she left...

    Good stuff .

Argh Kelly Clarkson is such a wasted talent. Really winds me up. She has/had the potential to rise to the heights of Mariah, Beyonce and Pink ... instead we get this rubbish. I am genuinely annoyed by the direction shes taken in her career.

Sober, Beautiful Disaster, Behind these Hazel eyes (not my fav really), Since you've been gone ... all tracks that she can be proud of. This... not.

Although pop rock isnt something I disagree in, its a shame Miley Cyrus does it better really isnt it?

you have got to be joking? this is a horrendous song. I actually cannot believe it was released. Someone other than her must have listened to it and realized it is terrible. lucky if it gets 1 star.

It 's got a catchy chorus.... but that is about all.

I agree with Liam.... it's an o.k song , but not great enough to elevate her to the next level.

This will not reach number one like her previous single , (My life would suck without you ), and it does not show more quality and variation to make loads of undecided people rush out and buy her album.

This is an important marketing and promotional tool... the second single !

    Anyway you American idol fans.....

Did Kris deserve to win American idol 2009 ?

At least as far as Since U Been Gone Goes (I can understand the confusion over the exact message in I Do Not Hook Up) it sounds to me like you were hearing, but not really listening. The only part of the lyrics in SUBG that would lead to that conclusion is part of the first verse - the rest is clearly about relief over the end of the relationship.

Anyway, while it isn't the most original song ever musically, I really like it and I think Kelly deserves some credit for the message it sends.

If you want to hear more diversity from Kelly, the new album (All I Ever Wanted) is probably her most diverse yet. There's pop-rock like this, but there's also some ballads (Cry, Already Gone, If No One Will Listen), a pop-punk song (whyyawannabringmedown), a 70s rock style song (All I Ever Wanted), a sixties sounding song (I Want You), dancey songs (If I Can't Have You) and some mid-tempo stuff (Ready). You should check it out.

Oh, I second what Elentari said: the new Kelly album has all sorts of stuff going on... and it's very, very good. I tend to listen to the entire album in one go, not just one track here and another there.

This one is completely unmemorable. You forget about it straight after listening.
