Jonas Brothers - 'Paranoid'

Jonas BrothersProvocative title, donchathink? I mean the Brothers Jonas, in all their non-real, strictly-for-the-little-girls glory, must be getting a fair amount of heat from the world's rocksnobular community. Especially as they've got that 3-D concert movie out ahead of more 'worthy' acts. And now they're releasing a song which has the same title as a song and album by Black Sabbath - the metalliest metal band that ever there was, according to Kerrang! - at exactly the same time that Black Sabbath re-release the album with the same title as the song by the Jonas Brothers.

Needless to say, the JoBro song is actually related to the Black Sabbath song in no audible way whatsoever. You can go on ahead and make your own "in league with Satan" jokes now...

(. It starts and ends with a big ad for the album. How very Disney.)

In terms of the song, it's a bit of a groover, a bit of a moover, a bit moody, and, as it's JoBro, more than a little bit dudey. It's a lot more muscular and red-blooded than the anti-JoBro league would ever care to admit, but it's also a bit too themed lyrically to really cut it as a proper 'real' confessional rock-type song. Clearly someone has decided that being mentally ill is a good subject for a pop song, and strung together as many commonly-held ideas about paranoia as they can, in the shortest possible time.

Thankfully, they've made a pretty decent fist of it, adding cute little details like "that's why my ex is still my ex" rather than grinding away at the potential misery of the situation. It's still just a pop song, after all.

There again, there are times when you miss seeing the rest of the film around which this song should really be made. I bet it would involve a cure based on some kind of musical performance. This also is the Disney way...

(Fraser McAlpine)

"The lyrics are simple, emotional feelings that one can feel in a relationship."
"Although the song only skims the surface of angst, it rocks a nice balance between rock and pop"
