Peter Andre - 'Behind Closed Doors'

Peter Andre

First things first, I feel I should admit something controversial: I have always been a 'Team Katie' girl. Yes, I know what you're thinking: a) surely that is no way to start a Peter Andre review (and in that, you're probably right) and b) Team KATIE?! 'WHAT THE...'

Well, until recently, why not? My argument was always that even though she appears to be cold, heartless and dead behind the eyes, these were always the things we loved her for. But then those pics started to emerge of her, you know the ones, the jacuzzi + random guy ones, and my opinion started to shift. Man, Katie - that was way harsh. Suddenly I'm thinking "Is it too late to swap sides?"

So, now, with one foot in each camp, I'm aware I can't keep my balance for much longer. Which way will I fall? Well, Mr. Andre, let's just say if your single is good enough, you could (almost literally) sway me.

(. Aw Pete, thass GAW-juss!)

I don't know if I was expecting some 'Mysterious Girl' upgrade or another cover of a Disney song (either would have been very well recieved), but I can safely say that I never expected this. 'Behind Closed Doors' sees Andre like we've never seen Andre before, and we have seen a LOT of Andre, right?

There's GUITAR - more guitar than I've ever heard on a Kasabian record - and there's some seriously raw, raspy vocals - all of which do well to get across the emotion Peter's aiming at, but as this is PETER ANDRE, conspire to make the whole thing sound seriously cringe.

It's not the fact that he's trying something new - that's great - it's more that it doesn't exactly sound like something new (welcome to 90's boyband central). And then there's the fact that, essentially, it's a guitar-y power-pop doom-ballad that's unlikely ever to make it onto a Fathers' Day CD. And that is saying something.

Of course, I want to talk about this song as a song and not about it with regards to Katie and Peter's relationship (despite the opening paragraph), but Peter makes that a bit difficult with his transparent lyrics:

"You think you've got me figured out
You think you know what I'm about
Don't believe what you read
Half of the things you see"
.

Of course I'm not insinuating anything at all, but isn't it funny how he should have a song like this ready for release the moment him and Katie have broken up? Just saying.

Anyway, the short and short of the matter is, this is not a good song. Sorry, Peter, but until you release something that makes you grab my attention in the way your ex does the headlines, I think I'm gonna stick firmly in the Katie Camp.

Toasted marshmallow anyone?

Oh thank God! I was revving up my complaints motor if this song received any more than 2 stars.

I remember Sprit telling us a while back that this song was really good. Sprit, mate, I think you're wrong.

This song is truly awful. I hated it from the moment I heard it on Katie and Peter:Stateside (A friend was watching it, honest) and Peter was in the recording studio bopping his head away at the album listen while Katie looked utterly bored.

The raspy vocals are terrible, as he tries to come across all cool and sulky. It's not happening, Pete. No one likes you.

Honestly, Vicki, if you could, would you have given this song 0 stars? (Has there ever been a song awarded 0 stars?!) I know I would.

    Team Katie all the way.

Oh! Did anyone see his performance on T4 on the beach? If you don't like him, it's hilarious. I don't think anything went right.

Oh Peter .. what happened ?

The early version of this had a different drum pattern and sounded modern , and it had a dance feel , and real , real attitude .

This version has been given a pop friendly sheen , but it has such a dated production , it sounds very mid - nineties ! It has slowed right down.

Oh woe ! To try to make it sound commercial , has taken all the attitude and balls out of what started out as a good song .

This new drum pattern is so dated .

This will be a top 20 hit due to publicity and celebrity , but for me this is a missed opportunity , and should have been much , much better .

Pete , get yourself a real top drawer producer , and give us attitude !

  • Comment number 3.

Somewhere in there is a good song trying to get out...

  • Comment number 4.

Dan , trust me , this song started out a lot better...

  • Comment number 5.

I really think he'll chart higher if he rereleases Mysterious Girl.

  • Comment number 6.

Well at least I can say that Robbie's new single "Bodies " , is rather good . Now I have heard the finished mix of that , so I do feel safe . lol

  • Comment number 7.

I don't like it either. Honestly Spirit, sounds like Marillion you said at one point, that may have raised expectations somewhat...

  • Comment number 8.

Id love a nostalgic 90s boyband throw back. Instead we got this rubbish. Ugh. More repeative when a Black Eyed Peas churn out with the originality of Take That's 5th ballard release from Circus. I do hope this gets minimal readio coverage and bombs.

  • Comment number 9.

I don't get why anyone would be on Peter Andre's side? He such a vain, supercilious so-and-so. I remember watching Stateside with my dad once (nothing on telly, and NO I'm not in denial), and he was just unbearable. I think they were renting something out and he said some vile stuff to Katie Price.

She's no angel and she doesn't claim to be. The interviews she's done are shameless and quite correctly, attention-seeking, but she's honest about that. She's not trying to get people on side, she's just being blunt; that's how she's always been. He's painting himself to be the second coming of Jesus.

Has it occurred to people that you can't be that sincere when you insist on doing all your interviews topless? and it's the tabloids! Someone actually believed the tabloids word for word! If he was really eaten up by his emotions, you wouldn't air them to the world, no-one's that detatched really, so he can't care much.

It's also an obvious publicity scheme to subliminally promote this atrocity of a song. The song sounds like something Diane Warren vomited up in a drunken blindness that was mistakenly took for a song. I mean COME ON!! Is it any coincidence it correlates with recent events even though it was recorded prior to them? Apparently he officially ended it too, and when I put two and two together I come to the conclusion he cares about his, ahem, career more than he cares about his family. And has the nerve to make out he doesn't. Pig.

    Rant over.

  • Comment number 10.

MozFoz - You are a legend.

  • Comment number 11.

Yeah sorry Jax , this last mix of the finished product is a real disappointment !

It sounds so lifeless and dated .

It sounds so safe , he really needed to go all out attitude .

  • Comment number 12.

Coming to the lyrics of Behind Closed Doors , he has written it from personal experience , so how can this be wrong ?

He wrote it when he was with Katie , so this explains what he has been feeling for a long time .

If he was to come out with a song called "Im so happy right now " , that would not be in keeping with the truth .

On watching Katie and Peter stateside it was obvious that she was gnawing away at his self esteem and putting him down incessantly , I am amazed he withstood it for so long . Of course , he was gonna write about it .

The fact that she is now living with a new beau so soon , will probably give Pete an albums worth of material .

I just wish the finished product of Behind Closed Doors was as good as what it should have been.

Alas it isn't and will give another advantage to Team Katie !

  • Comment number 13.

If this turns into a discussion about Katie and Peter's frankly boring life I may just lose my faith in not only this blog but human kind. Everybody has an opinion on their relationship. I have one too. Please dont all feel the need to stick them down on this blog because normally they are about as interesting as the actual relationship.

  • Comment number 14.

I'm not particularly bothered about their relationship either, it's just I needed to let off some steam about what he appears to be doing. People like him in the music business really annoy me. Don't get me wrong: I think OK! have seriously wasted paper in the past.
But if I'm honest Peter Andre and 'written from a personal experience' don't seem to match. He's not exactly deep, and even if it is a release of emotion he should try a different sort of release. The song's just ... ick.

  • Comment number 15.

ha! haters can go on as much as you want about peter but you're very much in the minority! no coincidence. can't believe some here are saying katie has been 'honest', she's proved herself as a grade A liar time and again, has never cared about anyone but herself. doesn't need me to say. i dislike this song as much as most but i get the feeling many here are trying to say 'i hate this song and the fact peter is releasing a new single and album so let's support katie!' i don't think peter is exactly an angel but he hasn't sank nearly as low as her, but that would be hard for anyone to do no matter how hard they tried. oh well, sorry people, carry on now, bye.

  • Comment number 16.

WHAT?!?! guys think about what we are doing? bringing ridiculous shallow celebrity relationships into CHARTBLOG. this is a haven women and gentlemen, of music. i have no time whatsoever for who is in the wrong or the right in their relationship. i don't care that it relates directly to the song, not budging. kutox i think u hav written here with the primary purpose of discussing things other that music. shame on you.

spirit what happened. this new robbie williams track better be te best thing since.... two headed boy by neutral milk hotel or there will be hell-to-pay...

    angry

  • Comment number 17.

We're trying not to, angryflatknees, but with such a high profile relationship, it's difficult not to.

Seriously though, it's an awful, awful song. I just hope the general public agree

  • Comment number 18.

Don't be daft. The first sentence of the review is about whose "side" Vicki's on, and you expect people not to respond with their views on it? Especially with a song which apparently draws directly on that subject matter?

Normally, I truly don't care about celebrity relationships guff (Sienna Miller, Cheryl Cole etc). And to be honest, I'm not too interested in the ins and outs of this one. But since I've always found Jordan such a repellent, soulless creature from day one of her incomprehensible arrival on the celebrity stage, and Peter Andre has always struck me as a slightly naive but well-meaning and personable guy, I have no qualms about coming out for him (ooer).

It amazes and saddens me in equal measure that some girls and young women model themselves after her.

  • Comment number 19.

I don't think I went about my rant the right way. Basically, they're both awful people who I wish would go away, and even though this is a music blog, this single was never going to be about the music was it?

Anyway, I don't think this will chart very high. T4 on the Beach performance was slaughtered (rightly so). Most people I've talked to about it didn't even know he was releasing a single. I agree with a previous comment. He should re-re-release Mysterious Girl. Though that would be quite a sad event for him really.

  • Comment number 20.

Curtains your comment at 18 resonates with me .

Moz Foz , your comment that this will not chart very high is guaranteed to haunt you .

There are many factors why this song will be a top 5 hit , and I really think taking in every aspect of this singles release , we could well be looking at next Sunday's number 1 single .

I can see Peter outselling Calvin Harris , it's just whether Behind Closed Doors has the legs to outstride Tinchy Stryder .

  • Comment number 21.

As I have said before , I like the song and I like the lyrics , whatever you think about Peter Andre you cannot deny that he has written this from the heart . This is admirable , no -one has written this song for him . And quite frankly his comeback single had to be about the traumas he has been through , he has lived it ,so as a singer , he had to sing about it .

Pink released So What about her marriage break up , because it was what she was feeling at the time.

To RE-RELEASE Mysterious Girl again is a ludicrous idea , it has already hit the charts twice .

He had to release new material .

He has largely written his new album "A NEW BEGINNING " by himself .

My only gripe as I have highlighted above , is the production and mix of the track , which to me needed to sound cutting edge , harder and with more attitude .

Still , let's see where it charts....

  • Comment number 22.

It should be a real fascinating chart battle on Sunday , with the number one being anyone of these four..

    Tinchy
Black eyed peas (again ! )
    Calvin Harris
    Peter Andre .

I reckon the number 1 single will be one of those four ...

  • Comment number 23.

I see your points, and they're good ones, but I don't think it's a no. 1 contender. No one I know likes it, and even if it has come from the heart, it's just not a good song in my opinion. Even if the demo had better preduction (you're right that it sounds dated), this is the version on sale, so it's this the public listen to. Also, has no-one picked up he can't sing very well? Just me?
The Mysterious Girl thing was a joke! I was kind of attacking his career thus far. Yes, it would be a disaster.
I might be wrong, if it's no. 1, so be it, my soul might die slightly, but so be it. Is it high on the iTunes chart?
I'm just gonna stop blabbering on about it, :)

Tinchy or Calvin for me, hopefully the latter.

  • Comment number 24.

I had an e-mail from Amazon saying that for the last 2 days it has been their best seller .

On the other side , it is not getting blanket t.v or radio play , probably due to it's dated production technique .

I expect it to be top 5 , it's a catchy song and certain quarters will love it .

The number one will be Tinchy , Calvin or The BLACK Eyed Peas again , that is now being played everywhere ! And it's now physically released .

Andre has an outside chance !

  • Comment number 25.

To clarify , Amazon said that for the last 2 days , Peter Andre has been their biggest seller ...

  • Comment number 26.

I think you are being WAY too harsh ppl like the heart felt song, He has been through so much, but it seems MY post wont be added unless you are a jordon-liker, HAVE YOU HEARD THE ACOUSIC VERSION .... THE GREATEST VOICE .... DONT LIKE UR REVIEW....... QUIT UR JOB

  • Comment number 27.

Hmm, consider me haunted. Do you reckon Amazon downloads have a big effect on the charts in general, say, compared to iTunes or Napster? I hope not. =/
With all this in account, I say top 10. What did Ra8chel say? Oo-er.

  • Comment number 28.

"To clarify , Amazon said that for the last 2 days , Peter Andre has been their biggest seller ..."

Is he working on sales in the call centre?

  • Comment number 29.

    Yeah he is .

Unfortunately he is selling more Calvin Harris than Peter Andre .

    Sort it out Pete !

    Just sell your own !!!!!!!!

  • Comment number 30.

Ra8chel, of course your opinion matters, everyone has different views on it. I personally think his voice is awful, but you're entitled to have your say. I think someone reported your comment before it's been allowed on, which is a bit lame. And I really don't think anyone's a Jordan liker. I think she's a waste of skin and bones, but I dislike Peter more.

  • Comment number 31.

MozFoz - interesting that you mention diane warren eh - i'm pretty sure he sung a diane warren song on 2nd album (or was it 3rd...) - and yes, i will admit to owning it. I was (am) a big montell jordan fan and he produced stuff on that album and i quite liked it.....

  • Comment number 32.

I like some Diane Warren stuff, I just think this sounds like a song she'd rather forget, if she had wrote it, you know what I mean? Who's Montell Jordan? Enlighten me :)

  • Comment number 33.

Montell Jordan - this is how we do it - one hit wonder really, but i loved him when i was younger, and carried on buying albums, was one of the first concerts i went to! brian mcknight and fugees also worked on that album.

and yeah, i think diane warren is amazingly talented, but her songs to vary from fantastic to utter cheese fest, and are also dependent on who sings them.

ah google search tells me that 'letting you go' on that album was one of dianes.

if you google diane warren and peter andre, this blog entry is the 2nd search result...

  • Comment number 34.

    Interesting, I'll listen to him.
Brian McKnight and the Fugees? That's shocked me admittedly.
I totally agree about Diane Warren. Un-Break My Heart is a good example. Quite a cheesy song but Toni Braxton makes it brilliant.
And I imagine the search result comes from the fact you don't often hear a lot about Peter Andre's back catalogue. But now I want to hear this album, I'm very intrigued.

  • Comment number 35.

from what i remember, montell was hailed peter as the air to the throne of michael jackson as well...

i dont know exactly how involved fugees and brian mcknight were with the album, but i dont think it was quite rent a song like Diane warren. oh actually, after some research, 'letting you go' was co written by diane and brian... i thought it was a pretty decent album at the time. I wasnt a swooning peter fan, i bought it due to who worked on it and i thought it was pretty good stuff.

i watched a programme about diane warren once, and considering the kind of solitary life she leads, its amazing how she churns out all these songs, mostly about love, with a large proportion of them being hits and/or great songs. pretty amazing, i'd love to meet her.

  • Comment number 36.

Get ready to see Peter Andre in the top 5 again !

    Go TEAM PETE !

  • Comment number 37.

    Number 4 !

  • Comment number 38.

Sales are dropping on iTunes though, I reckon it might stay top 10 next week.
Diane Warren is like Burt Bacharach in ways, she can just sit down and write a song it most people cue up to place their bids for it. She's a hit auctioneer. Total respect for her, considering most of her songs are great.
I see what you mean about the album, kookie. It's well crafted but I feel that someone else should be singing it. Pete's definitely not got the charisma or the talent Michael Jackson had. I've just never got why he generated such popularity. Then again, that's just me. I might be missing something.

  • Comment number 39.

Montell Jordan probably has more of an idea than me - his stuff is pretty good by the way.

  • Comment number 40.

My beloved and I were on YouTube the other night and I put on the video for Flava, because she didn't remember it (WTF?). And funnily enough, as it was playing I mentioned to her that it sounded exactly like This Is How We Do It by Montell Jordan (whom she also didn't remember). I'm guessing this was the album that Kookie's talking about.

Ah, Montell Jordan and his stupid little rappy bit about being 6'8". Good times.

  • Comment number 41.

Nah, 'Flava' wasnt on the montell inspired album, t'was the album before. 'All About Us' was the main montell track. 'Flava' sounded more like backstreet boys to me to be honest.....

This is how we do it by Montell Jordan is a great song! ( i think it's the slick rick sample that does it) I still love it, his albums are a bit hit and miss (esp the god songs...) but he'll always hold a place in my record collection. When I saw him live he was supported by Ultimate Kaos! haha. and Coolio turned up after heading over from recording Top Of The Pops. i'll never forgive my dad for not letting me pay £10 to meet an greet with Montell because we had to get up early the next day :-( Peter was also seeing Kim, one of Montell's dancers for a while.

Montell is on twitter too if you fancy following him, he seems to be doing a lot of 'old school' shows in the states with people like keith sweat etc.

  • Comment number 42.

I still don't get Twitter. I need someone to explain it to me. How do you restrict yourself to 140 words? That is a skill. As you can tell, I don't possess it.

  • Comment number 43.

Can you imagine how difficult it is for me ?

  • Comment number 44.

    ONLY 140 ?

  • Comment number 45.

Are you on Twitter Moz ?

  • Comment number 46.

Not heard the song, hope to die being able to say the same thing...

But I just thought I'd write and ask why everyone seems intent on being in either team?

I'm personally in team-Couldn't give a monkey's about either of these attention seeking talentless people...

I'm just fed up with walking into newsagents and seeing either of them giving an EXCLUSIVE in numerous daily journals... has the word exclusive lost it's meaning?

  • Comment number 47.

This comment was removed because the moderators found it broke the house rules. Explain.

  • Comment number 48.

Well my last comment was not excepted as it may have caused offense, but I feel I was truthful in my
    assumption .
I think Katie is who she was and still is from the get go.
I really can not see any difference in her approach to life and she has been through a lot herself, a good mother and a hard worker. i wish her all the luck rebuilding her life back to the way it was before Peter .

Peter on the other hand was only in it for what he could get . and then slapping her in the face while on top with this song .(not good a tall)
I feel he was fronting it all and couldn't wait for the day he made some money to relaunch himself once again, but in doing so .... has damaged the very thing /person that put him right on top again .
    shame really .
The wedding to me was a sham those tears were of relief rather than joy .
the song is over produced , the vocals are covered with all sorts of effects , you can tell when he sings it live the difference between his true vocal abilities .(weak to be honest ).
Well nuff said, I might get wiped again, if so im not wring on this PK situation again, I will keep my opinion's to my self .

  • Comment number 49.

I don't think I can be honest through this blog.
    Should I say I love it when I don't ?
is this a free spoken debate or just what you would like to hear me to say ??????
I won't be using this to discuss my feelings no longer.

You won't believe how close to the truth I am with this. So I guess you will never know.
    Keep fooling yourselves .

  • Comment number 50.

Ok I might have pushed it a bit .... maybe I should use my word's more carefully in future .
but pls. don't feel I am having a go at Pete , I loved Mysterious girl, and feel you Natural , I happen to know the writers of those songs, and those songs will always stand the test of time for what they where
    (classic pop hits )
Pete has a lot to thank Katie for, and by not saying or trying to look bad in the media is doing his x no justices, and is I feel unfair towards her .
Can you imagine how you would feel if you found out you where used to gain popularity and then dumped and left to pick up the peaces once your x has his album ready & finished and all the support ready and in place to secure himself status once again ????? id feel awful .... and id probably be acting like Katie ,OFF THE WALL!! because she truly loved him, there's no doubt about that !
she stood behind him all the way . So I wish the press would lay off her .
like I said he should be thankful for meeting her and all the people he has walked over to get where he is and stop being slimy about it all .
I feel my skin crawl when I see him on the box ... seeping through me and trying to sell himself as a likable person.
To be honest I don't feel he knows who he is , even at 36 years old .
    It shows through his music.
Thankfully for him ... he had a few good songs, but I can tell he has no real skill as a singer and is amateur as a performer. Very boy band type ! and looks lost on stage. Maybe its time for him to move on into a different line of work and leave this to younger people to exploit.
    Truth will come out .

  • Comment number 51.

    WOW !!!
Have you heard of soul singer Glen Goldsmith ?
He was writer of that tune (Mysterious girl) ,and (I feel you) and (natura)l "I feel you" is my fav can hear Glen all over that style wise .
Glen had some wicked tunes out in the late 80s Dreaming, and I wont cry, .. mashed up the place! .
He did a brilliant tune called (Go with the flow) 1993.
I found out he was a songwriter on his myspace and facebook, thought he gave it up to be honest.
That bloke was amazing! and when I heard Peter André's songs , I immediately thought the sound was almost Glen Goldsmith like ... except Glen has a much better sounding voice.
Well missed that bloke, he was a megga star way back !!
Apparently Glen Goldsmith is all over those hit's with backing vocals also.
But it proves that boy has talent cos he's still around .
    Re: Peter
Im in total agreement with you blackbeen though, about the way he comes over.
I find him so insipid, and that latest record is covered up with sound affect's on his voice that is not natural sounding.
I wonder why ? maybe he doesn't like the sound of his own voice ? or maybe he isn't a real singer ?? and is just a lucky person ? rather than truly gifted .
The production sounds nothing like his old stuff and sounds like the producers where trying desperately to get away from peters usual sound which is what made him .
I agree he should do something else and leave katie Price alone.
Blackbean I agree with every word you say mate !!
Im off to go check Glen Goldsmith classics somewhere in my record collection.
Hurry up Glen and come back show him how its suppose to be done mate!

Big Brother has been cancelled. Joyous day.

This song's already history, mwa-ha-ha. I've just realised this song is more of a novelty thing. Most people only bought it because of the split, which makes you question the public. I can't believe I actually cared. They're both incessantly boring, selfish and downright vain. Why are people genuinely interested in them. You try and read one OK! interview and they're so tedious. Some random couple off the high street would be more exciting.
