Chiddy Bang

Oh now this is the kind of thing we can all get behind, isn't it? Song titles as crossword clues! You don't even have to know that this is largely based on reswizzled chunks of the MGMT song 'Kids', because you can work it out from the title.

OK, technically it should be '10 Down: Opposite Of Adults (4)', but that would just be confusing if you didn't have the rest of the crossword to hand. I don't even know if there IS a crossword, but at least we now have a clue for it. A clue we can add other clues to, right?

3 Across: Cloywit serenades urban night birds (anag - 3,4)

or

4 Down: Cheryl Cole's ripcord adventure (9)

(. No need to get big-headed.)

Thankfully, that's about as cryptic as we need to get. The song is straight up and easy, like a pop smoothie made of jittery sample, liquid-smooth rap, clever words, and banana ice-cream. "Chiddy Bang!" yells one of them at the beginning, "pretty much amazing!", and who are we to argue?

There's nothing false here, no deliberately outrageous or self-consciously partystoopid silliness, just two blokes rapsinging their way through a funny lyric sheet.

I'm particularly fond of the self-defeating "cos the real world is kinda like Real World", if only cos it deliberately collapses in a sweaty heap all over the fine line between "eureka!" and "duh!", giggling all the while.

Of course, the lack of what we are going to have to start calling 'a Ke$ha/GaGa moment' means the main hook is essentially supplied by someone else's song, but it's a good hook, and a good song, so it's all fine really.

Now, anyone fancy doing a wordsearch based on Black Eyed Peas lyrics?

  • Comment number 4.

The Good Lady of Gaga by any chance?

Lets be honest its not the most amazing game ever thought up is it? Crosswords are only to keep your Nan/Mother amused when you can't be bothered to talk to them because Holly Willoughby is on the telly...

  • Comment number 5.

    WOOOOAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH wait a minute.

Is my computer playing up or has Fraser given this FIVE STARS??!!! Its not awful bit as the best bit is from another song then it's worth no more than three surely

    *deep breath*

RIGHT THAT'S IT! THAT IS THE LAST STRAW! NEVER HAPPY WITH THE STAR RATING, YOU LOT! I SWEAT PURE BRAIN MATTER TO GET THE WORDS IN THE RIGHT ORDER AND SPELLED CORRECTLY MOST OF THE TIME AND ALL YOU EVER NOTICE IS THE STAR RATING. IT'S JUST AN ARBITRARY RANKING SYSTEM! IT DOESN'T REALLY MEAN ANYTHING! NO-ONE WILL EVER GET THE SAME STAR RATING ALL THE TIME, IT'S SUBJECTIVE! IT IS ONLY THERE SO THAT IF I WANDER OFF THE POINT, YOU CAN STILL TELL IF THE SONG IS ANY GOOD OR NOT, AND EVEN THEN, IT'S HARDLY CONCLUSIVE! I GAVE THE TING TINGS SIX OUT OF FIVE ONCE. THAT SHOULD TELL YOU HOW SCIENTIFIC A PROCESS IT IS!

And in any case, I had a lot of fun listening to Chiddy Bang, so ner.

Somebody tell Roth that I don't love college.

    Love it.

  • Comment number 8.

    Hahahaha, brilliant.

I was only wondering as you described the song as 'fine' and yet gave it the best possible rating you could.

Please don't shout at me again... :(

  • Comment number 9.

Oh that? Just that it's not perfect, but it's perfectly good fun all the same. Fun's important!

  • Comment number 10.

Tis indeed. You keep on having fun Fraser, even through the dark days like whenever when Justin Bieber decides to release another one...

  • Comment number 11.

    *take out that extra 'when'

  • Comment number 12.

    I gotcha. Thanks Jonesy!

  • Comment number 13.

He's got a new one all over the radio like a rash at the moment.

Btw Fraser you should comment more! You used to have a good banter going with the posters, but it seems to have dropped off a bit of late. Too busy for us?!? >:(

  • Comment number 14.

Not at all. I still read all the comments, even the embarrassing/challenging ones. Hell, sometimes it's me that complains about the sweary ones! (although not the ones with foreign names in).

I'll try and comment a bit more in future. Thanks Liam!

  • Comment number 15.

Yay! Adording fan #1 (or #2) likes a few comments from F Man.

I've been good recently with the comments too! I think even Spirit's had more removed than me.

  • Comment number 16.

    " Yay ! Adoring fan number 1 or 2 , likes a few comments from F Man "

Can't just be me that thinks Liam's blind love relationship with Fraser is similar to a teenage girl pining for Justin Bieber ?

Get a room you two !

Nice review Fraser, this is a tune that I could listen to for a while and not get bored of due to that irresistibly catchy little chorus. Creatively, however this song amounts to zilch but that's not gonna stop the British buying public from carrying it into the top ten this weekend. It would have been nice to see a backing track being created here to be rapped over considering as you say, the main hook is stolen from someone else's song, however it's a catchy and fun tune destined to be played at parties across the nation. Final Rating: 3/5

  • Comment number 18.

Methinks someone is just trying to divert attentrion from his own secret adoration of 'F Man', spirit... ;)

  • Comment number 19.

Please stop calling me the F-Man, it makes me sound like a high-fibre diet.

I much prefer King Of Skill, or Frazzle.

  • Comment number 20.

Hahahahahahahhaahah King of Skill. How long have you been sat thinking, 'Damn, i wish they'd appreciate my genius and give me a good name instead of unintelligent plays on my real name...'

  • Comment number 21.

What? Everyone else calls me that? ;-)

  • Comment number 22.

George, I think the use of the sample here is great. They've messed around with the tempo and made it a bit more hip hop, although it's still very recognisably Kids. But it gives it a different (cooler, in my opinion) feel from the original song. And as said before in another comment on Jedward I think, this kind of sampling of other songs is part of the culture of rap (although the songs sampled do tend to be a bit older than a year or two). So it goes with the territory.

  • Comment number 23.

It's a funny and incisive rap over a much better overall song. Not quite up to the standards set by MC Miker G and DJ Sven but can we really ask for so much? It's fun, as the Big McA himself said.

  • Comment number 24.

Top score from Frazzle McDazzle. You ARE in a good mood aren´t you. Can´t say I agree all the way but it´s a fun, good track, and way better than the original. Couldn´t see the point of that, really.
