Demi Lovato - 'Remember December'

Demi Lovato

One of the best things that can ever happen to a music fan is to be forced to listen to something they have certain (ie low) expectations of, only to have their prejudices torn away like a plaster off a hairy arm - quickly, brutally and with much wincing.

It happened when Girls Aloud's first single wasn't a rubbish ballad, for example. It happened for me the first time I heard 'Fly On The Wall' by Miley Cyrus (srsly. It's AMAZING), and now here's a new song by madam out of Camp Rock. Surely lightning can't strike three times on the same pair of ears, can it?

Oh. Seems it can. Yikes!

(. Clearly just got back from Camp Punkaltemo then.)

What is she singing in the verses? According to the lyric sheet it is:

"I feel a separation coming on,
Cos I know, you want to be moving on"

So it's a little odd to hear it coming out of her mouth as:

"I feel a separation cyammy nine,
Cos I know, you want to be movie nine."

Now, I've heard Demi Lovato speak. She's an actress: speaking is her JOB. Being able to say words in such a way that people can understand her is about 70% of what she does to earn her wages. Should we ask for a refund?

Then there's the chorus. It's a grand chorus. Someone in Team Lovato has been cocking an ear to the musical stylings of Paramore, and maybe suggested that the next logical step after Camp Rock's wholesome Disneyfication of popular song might be something a little more confessional. They might even have used the words "edgy" or "dark".

Oh sure the verses are moody synthpop, but those choruses...sheesh!

Whatever the reason, it works. It VERY works. I'm sure there's a punkrock reason why we should all get together and hate it, but for the life of me I just can't. Even with the weird pronunciation and silly lyrics, this is a corker.

PS: I found this crumpled-up note round the back of Demi's songwriter's house. It's just a list of words, most of which have been crossed out.

"dismember, remember, nonmember, november, surrender, september, december, big spender"

I wonder what it can mean?

Hahaha, I feel so dirty when I listen to this song, and as a 16 year old girl, not in THAT way. Despite being pretty much part of the target audience for this song, I just know I shouldn't like it or anything else disney affiliated, what with Rock Snob peer pressure and all that. Heck, I'd be the first to say the majority of it is a pile of crap (I may have been a bit of a McFly/Busted fangirl back in the day but the lyrics make all the difference: I highly doubt you'd find the Jonas Brothers singing about a Sauna foursome). So, it pains me to say I have listened to this a few times on youtube.
....But hey, the Rock Snobs need never know ;)

  • Comment number 2.

Personally I want to give this one star just because by principle I hate it, in the same I hate everything by Disney. Nevertheless it's actually okay, 3 stars in my opinion.

  • Comment number 3.

What Demi needs to do is ditch Disney, find herself a guitarist, bassist and drummer and become an alternative pop rock band like Paramore, Evanescence or No Doubt.

I mean this song is really good. All those electronic backed verses...and her breathy vocals. She's really talented. Of course, I'm a sucker for wannabe girl rockers!

It´s alright, I´d give it 3 stars. I´m trying here, okay?

The verses are very, very promising. You kinda expect a massive and memorable chorus, but then you end up with something predictable and it´s... not going anywhere really.

She´s got the attitude, she acts like she was born to do this, she can sing (...ish) but still... tune, hello, where are you?

But maybe it´s a grower? A future classic? Or maybe not.

At 1, a 16 year old girl saying "back in the day..." Lol.

  • Comment number 6.

As for Demi, she might be worth trading for half a Marina and a couple of Susan Boyles, if anyone is interested.

  • Comment number 7.

It was an ironic back in the day thranjax, never fear.

  • Comment number 8.

Ah! Irony! Now I understand, like rain on your wedding day...

  • Comment number 9.

Is rain on your wedding day ironic? I just thought that was bad luck.

Surely irony would be something like escaping from a burning building only to be hit by a speeding car outside.

  • Comment number 10.

No, it's having ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife!

  • Comment number 11.

is that not bad luck again harry ?

  • Comment number 12.

I'd say the spoons one counts as irony.

  • Comment number 13.

what about meeting the man of your dreams but then meeting his beautiful wife ? Isnt that ironic ?

  • Comment number 14.

    I understand the words :)
    I love this song
It's is a corker :) Demi is a very talented songwriter.
    5 stars :)

  • Comment number 15.

no i think thats bad luck again spirit.

how about having a deep prejudice for disney-produced singers so much that you condemn them and any word they do speak to everyone you know, and then someone makes you listen to this and you like it. is that not irony?

(thats not me by the way, i was just trying to think of an ironic situation to do with the song)

  • Comment number 16.

I don't think Jonesy's is irony that's just having you prejudices proved wrong. Irony in my opinion would be something like:
Being late to an award for punctuality
or in an adaption I found of Spirit's - Meeting the man of your dreams only to meet his beautiful wife who happens to be trying to find you a perfect man.

  • Comment number 17.

None of the things in that song we are quoting are ironic, that is probably the point of course. Alanis is clearly a meta pop singer.

  • Comment number 18.

What about winning the lottery tonight , but then being in the bank on Monday to cash a cheque for £6,000,000 ,and losing your life in bungled bank raid ?

    Surely that's ironic ?

    Or bad luck again ?

  • Comment number 19.

I think ironic would be if you didn't know you had won the lottery, you had to go to the bank to beg for a loan and then got shot in a bungled bank job, and your winning the lottery only became known after the event.

  • Comment number 20.

Ok , what about going on a pro - homophobia rally , but then falling in love on the march , with Klaus , a handsome, flambuoyant , exotic dancer from Stuttgart ?

    Surely THAT'S ironic ?

  • Comment number 21.

After 15 comments about irony, does it matter??!!!

Now, shall we talk about songs?

  • Comment number 22.

We ARE talking about songs! That's the irony of it.

  • Comment number 23.

I've always understood irony to mean the outcome of a story to be the exact opposite of the outcome that was expected.

    Does this seem plausible ?

  • Comment number 24.

I have checked wikipedia and irony seems to be whatever you want. In a story or film it should mean that the audience know something a character doesn't. In normal life it seems to be a word flexible in meaning.

  • Comment number 25.

Good response on 22 thranjax, I'll shutup now!

  • Comment number 26.

Harry's got the right idea of what I think of as irony (at 16), and Spirit's Klaus idea.

I remember trying to think up alternative scenarios for the lyrics in Ironic which would make them genuinely ironic. I think I came up with

    - ten thousand spoons, when all you need is a knife - in the canteen of a knife factory;

    - Mr Play-it-safe dying in a plane crash on his way to give a lecture on the advances in safety of modern aeronautical engineering;

    - The official carrying the pardon to the condemned killer on death row himself being murdered en route

For the lottery, how about having the winning ticket, but not being able to afford the bus journey to claim your winnings?

  • Comment number 27.

I don't quite understand why Klaus was on a homophobic rally in the first place, but what the hell, get it where you can!

Ideally in the nethers, my dears!

  • Comment number 28.

Oh come on Thranjax , keep up !

The fact that Klaus somehow ended up on a homophobic rally , is ironic in itself .
