Pendulum - 'The Island (Part 1)'

GCSE Music students! People with too much time on their hands! I have a project for you.

We are going to recreate Pendulum's latest song, without using any musical instruments at all, and there's every chance we'll do a better job of it than they have.

And we're doing this because someone's got to put the spark of human life back into it. Outside of the live drum and bass arena, where Pendulum make a lot more sense, this is just a slightly pompous, Basshuntery stab at a conventional dance anthem. It's got everything a dance anthem would have - the drums filter in and out, there's a build-up and a breakdown, and a big refrain which repeats often - but sonically it's all too preset and freeze-dried, and way too cheesy to be convincing, unless you were trying to write a national anthem for bees.

(. It's runny.)

SO, here's what we're gonna do. We're going to replace all of the clinically silly sounds with actually silly sounds, to see if we can't break through the silly barrier and into a more profound world beyond. All you will need is access to either some music editing software and a microphone - or a lot of willing volunteers - and a variety of household objects.

First up, the drums. Fill a suitcase with books, then drop it on a hard floor. That's your bass drum. The snare is a little fiddlier. What you need is a biscuit tin, half full of marbles. Drop a medium-sized stone into it. That should do it. Add some rattled-cutlery for your cymbals, and the disgusted tut of a pensioner for the off-beat hi-hat, and you've got yourself a rhythm track.

You can create the filtering effect by putting your hand over the microphone and then taking it off in stages, or wrapping everything in a duvet and slowly peeling it off.

The bass is easy, just twang a tightened washing line across a bathtub.

Next, the synth refrain. Got a kazoo? No? No matter, just drape a sheet of tissue paper over a comb. Then hold it vertically to your bottom lip and sing the melody in a mooey kind of way. You'll find the paper vibrates on the teeth of the comb, creating a fuzzy effect. You can use this for the main refrain AND the buzzy chords underneath. It'll require a bit of work getting the harmonies right, but it will be worth it in the end.

If you're feeling extra inventive, why not also try to play the melody using a balloon? What you do is blow it up, then pinch the 'neck' on either side, using both hands, and pull them slightly apart. As the air escapes, it makes the rubber vibrate, creating a shrill, unpleasant tone. Experiment until you can get the right notes and you're off.

And finally, the vocals. If you can find someone to sing it, make sure they sing through their nose as much as possible, as if a snake were attempting a Borat accent in their sleep. No giggling though. This is Pendulum, nothing is funny. Oh and they need to be in a cave or a church, so there are a lot of echoes. And maybe get someone to whisper-repeat every line too.

Then all you need to do is rustle some crisp packets in the chorus and you've got yourself a song!

"If you like Rock or Drum and Bass, you need to have a listen."

"'The Island' also represents an invigorating example of their prog & bass sound that has emerged from the band's constant desire to expand their musical palette."

"Some might think the beginning to 'The Island' had turned a little commercial but I think it only enhances Pendulum's already incredibly mastery that they have built up in the past few years and heightened the music to a new level."

def thought it deserved more than 2 stars.. one of the standout tracks from the new album... also btw my prediction that they would release part 1 was spot on, not 2 or a mix of the two of them was spot on and can be seen in the witchcraft review. win win win.

So annoyed that they still haven't announced a release of 'Encoder', it's not their best but even so, it's more commercial AND more Pendulum than this.

'The Island Pt. 1' is good, but it really does mark Pendulum's first branch into a much more radio-friendly sound than even 'Watercolour'. The synth riff is very catchy, but the drums on this tracks are enough to make all D&B lovers cringe, it's almost dubstep-ish and Lord know my hatred for that. Thankfully, Rob Swire manages to keep it from straying too far from the Pendulum sound, even if at times, you find yourself waiting for the riff to come back.

It's not exactly ground-breaking, but it's not the disappointment I expected it to be; the radio edit cuts the song to much more listenable length.

That said, I'd love to see a release of 'Encoder' or even more particularly (it's really grown on me), 'Crush'... may be a slight problem because 'Crush' is about as commercial as a used condom.

P.S. I apologise in advance if my dry humour offends any, I really did only mean it light-heartedly.

P.S.S. That P.S. was sooo obviously not an attempt to uppease the Moderators... :L:L

If you like this video then you will love the one for Standing On The Shore by Empire Of The Sun .

The Island lacks the hooks of the two Pendulum singles , and will not surpass them commercially as a result .

This is more of a subtle slow burner .

It's a decent enough song on it's own, but in the context of the album it feels like little more than a prelude to the superior (but far less radio-friendly) Part II.
Personally it's 3 stars for Part I and 5 for Part II.
However I do hope it manages to top Witchcraft's peak position in the Top 40, to see if Rob Swire stands by his promise of finally releasing Ransom...

Witchcraft is an awesome banging tune .

I recall Liam Howlett of The Prodigy saying that when he writes a song , he has to be so proud of it , that he would be prepared to go into battle with it and use it as a weapon .

I suspect Rob Swire feels exactly the same way about Witchcraft .

This isn't really a review at all, it's just a jibe at Pendulum. If the reviewer has no interest or knowledge of the genre then what is Frazer doing 'reviewing' the song, just get someone else to do it. Mind you, this is the guy that gave The Club Is Alive 5 stars LOL. Right, rant over...

Personally, I think it's one of the best songs off the album and prefer it to Witchcraft. Admittedly, the video is strange but the song itself is very catchy. 4 stars.

How has comment #4 not been flagged yet!? Whenever I mention a statement of subtle dry humour, someone explodes.

    FAVOURITISM.

'Withcraft' was the best thing Pendulum have released since 'Propane Nightmares'.

'The Island Pt. 1 - Dawn' is a bit naff, but it is quite a good (and more radio-friendly) dubstep-ish/DnB tune. And thus, it should chart reasonably high if the Pendulum purists (myself being one of them) can get off their high horse about Pendulum going commercial, because, at the end of the day, this dubstep stuff is pretty big now.

Personally, Pendulum may have gone commercial with the odd song on 'Immersion', in fact, I'd say 'The Island Pt. 1 - Dawn' was the only real change in sound. But look at 'Witchcraft', it's low chart position just tells you that they haven't completely gone commercial, because it's always the best tunes that miss the Top 10 in Pendulum's case.

I vote 'Crush' for next release, that should shut the purists up. But don't complain when it never charts or blame it on the public.

Mr Brightside , I think quite a few of us here , understand your pain .

It is quite frustrating when a song you like , or a band you have an emotional rapport to , experience jibes at them from someone who you feel really should give the band or the song a little research and give more of a balanced view . I agree Brightside ,maybe someone , who has a keen knowledge of Pendulum's sphere of music and live rapport could have given a better analysis .

Immersion went to number 1 and Pendulum's last 3 singles have all made the Radio 1 playlist , so their songs are respected and valued by the station , yet you have a catty demolition of them here , with little apparent understanding of what makes them popular . Ok , The Island is not the greatest song , but Witchcraft , which is a drum n bass monster , and causes absolute delirium at their live gigs , was mocked and likened to Scooby Doo background music , here . Go to a Pendulum concert and see what happens when they play Witchcraft ! Watch the connection to the audience . It's awesome .

The Playlist Panel keep listing Pendulum's singles , and seriously understand the bands appeal .

The other day , the wonderful Manic Street Preachers were called "grizzled old men in their forties" .

Is this the way to treat a band of their magnitude and achievements ?

Previously , we had a review of The Script's new single that stated that we don't NEED The Script .

Yeah , we could all probably give cheap catty potshots at any band you mention , but The Script are on the Radio 1 "A" list , so clearly the station value and need them , and the songs in the top ten , so loads of fans need them . Personal taste , I know , but Radio 1 have playlisted EVERY single by The Script , yet the Radio 1 review states that we don't NEED them .

Why are all their singles playlisted then ?

    Where is the consistency ?

Maybe , like many people have suggested prior to this , we need more people to discuss the singles , reviewing the actual songs, analysing the artists achievements objectively and thus giving more of a variety and balance .

In a sense spirit makes sense. :LL

If someone like Christina releases something like, hmm... 'Not Myself Tonight', it can be seen as a bit naff, but if Ke$ha were to release it, would it have been as bad as it was because it was Christina?

  • Comment number 12.

Spirit makes complete sense. The Script are an easy band to pick apart as a lot of their songs sound fairly similar but personally I thought their first album was very good (not heard their new one yet). But yeah, which bands do we 'need'? Another silly point imo.

Going back to Pendulum, I'm not saying that the 2 star rating is incorrect, merely that the 'review' is just a childish demolition of an artist. OddOne, BlueNEON and spirit have explained their own opinion and why it doesn't really do it for them far better than Frazer has. I'm not asking for a good rating for the song, but I'm asking for a proper review! :)

    Good song.
