JLS - 'Love You More'
I think we all know that this is not going to be the forum in which we discuss what is less than perfect about JLS, especially in the context of this, their latest single.
The song is for ´óÏó´«Ã½ Children In Need, this is the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio 1 Chart Blog, and JLS tore the roof off at last night's ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio 1 Teen Awards, and even if those last two things were not true, as a charity, Children In Need has been very active in my local area, helping to equip a youth club and provide sessions for local young people who would otherwise not have a right lot to do.
They even get to attend weekly music sessions, where they're encouraged to express themselves musically, rather than via the medium of shouting at grownups in the street. So in a very real sense, what JLS have done with this song, even if it does not save lives and make an immeasurable difference to countless young people all over the country, could conceivably give rise to a brand new pop star from Cornwall.
No pasty jokes please, we get that a lot.
(. It lacks focus.)
So, this is the big gospelly ballad which will provide sombre musical backing for a whole heap of video montages this Friday evening. In that context, the soaring, swelling, rolling waves of song will have a very direct emotional impact. It is good that there are soaring, swelling, rolling waves of song, of course. This is one occasion where pinching a snippet of song from an old musical or film, and then jamming it into a club banger would definitely not work.
What the Children In Need montage song requires is an enveloping sense of warmth, of strength and of compassion. They do nearly ruin it right at the beginning when the sonorous piano suddenly stops, as if there's a powercut, but they do NOT ruin it. They style it out, as if that is what they meant to do from the start.
After that, it's all smooch and soul. A warm blanket of love to wrap around someone who's been feeling left out in the cold.
It is, therefore, Children In Need in musical form. And as such, cannot be faulted.

We can't be risking upsetting the little girls now can we?

This doesn't deserve 5 stars, more like 4 at the most BUT... it's better than that song so I guess it is not such a bad review.
