Matt Cardle - 'When We Collide'

Matt Cardle

Nothing gets in the way of the X Factor. As a TV event that becomes a real-life EVENT event, the show continues to be an unstoppable force which will either squash or absorb everything in its path.

It's like a jelly juggernaut with a blue whale on top, rolling down a steep hill in a paper town, with no brakes and a push at the top from Brian Blessed. Raise a hand in protest, it'll just roll over you. Try and ignore it, and you'll end up with flattened feet. Jump on board, and you become part of its rolling mass, making it faster and heavier than ever before.

Oh sure, it leaves a trail of squashed and bewildered people in its wake. All of whom thought they knew what they were doing when they hitched a ride, and none of whom are quite sure what happened to make them lose their grip so quickly, but there are always more passengers to pick up, more customers to hoick in.

Even the people who stand in direct opposition, the people who wish most to stop the thing, are also adding fuel to the engines by caring about it in the first place. So long as there is attention on this one TV show and the talented people it hopes to find, it will continue to run, and it will continue to do whatever it wants, in the name of satisfying public demand.

What's confusing, especially to someone who can't watch it (I honestly find the mix of ambition, disappointment, ruined dreams, karaoke, deliberate selling-out of your own life history to gain votes, scathing critique, stupid critique, self-regard, smugness, cruelty and freak-show giggling so upsetting it keeps me awake nights) is quite what this Matt fellow has done to win so much public support.

I'm assuming he's been very, very brilliant in the backstage bits, cos on the evidence of this song, he sure as hell can't sing.

Never mind that this is a Biffy Clyro song, that it's about a curdled relationship with an obsessive edge, that it already exists in a pretty damn-near perfect form - sung by a man who knows how the tune goes - and that it already had a perfectly serviceable title in 'Many Of Horror'. To object to the idea of this cover without hearing it is as far removed from an appreciation of music as, well, the show itself.

Watching Matt perform the song - - is not a fun thing to do. Listen to him slide around all over the notes like a giraffe on a frozen pond. Marvel at his thin, reedy voice. Whoever came up with this probably should've run through it with him a few times first, surely? I mean I'm not sure how these things work, but I'd say that would be a good first step.

The second step might be to check that the Westlife Key Change moment doesn't stretch the poor lad's voice even further, into sonic territory which could be described as 'just plain unpleasant', if it were even possible to listen to the whole thing without running out of the room. That last high note? The bit where he falls to his knees and really goes for the climactic BOOM? Yeah, that's horrible.

Of course, it'd be tempting to run off a big rant about how much harm this is doing to real music, because the public are being conned into believing this is good music when it's not really good music even though the original song is good music but it's being turned into bad music by evil people who want to hurt good music because it doesn't make them any money. Some people really want to believe that this is the case, but it's probably not true.

All you can really say is that this is a song from a TV show. A TV show which places a premium on telling a story, one that starts with many and ends with one. What that one person goes on to do afterwards isn't really part of the story. It's interesting, in the sense that Harry Potter fans might like to know what Book 8 would be like, but it's not really that important. The big stuff has already been and gone.

So, even though the X Factor is a real event, the reality of the show - that Matt Cardle is the best singer of the year - is not the reality of, y'know, reality - not by a LONG shot. Sometimes the two things do coincide - Leona Lewis, Alexandra Burke - but it doesn't really matter to the story if they don't.

As for the No.1 thing...well it'll make a nice Christmas present for Biffy Clyro. Anyone who cares more about chart positions than the songs the positions represent isn't exactly serving music all that well either.

(Fraser McAlpine)

"A charisma black hole with a lovely voice used mainly to sing songs made famous by ladies while wielding a crap acoustic guitar."

"The boy really does have a good recording voice."

"At first, I thought it was a dud but I'm loving it now after each subsequent listen."

If you've not watched the series it's fairly understandable that you don't think he can sing. However bearing in mind he had Tonsilitis (how severe we don't know - very according to the show but it's difficult to tell really) a mere week or two ago, he's not really on top form at the moment. In the earlier weeks he was much more secure and really is quite a vocal talent in my opinion, albeit one in dire need of proper training so he doesn't wreck his voice.

He's also somebody who, at 27, has given the "real music" thing a fairly good shot, something Biffy Clyro would no doubt empathise with, since I know a guy who used to be on the gigging circuit with them back in the 90s and they've only just hit the outskirts of maintream consciousness. With that in mind, he's somewhat reminiscent of David Cook, in that he blurs the lines of what's credible and what isn't. If the band he'd released an album with earlier this year had taken off, they'd quite happily play him on XFM and the like, but because he appeared on a TV show, he'll be a musical pariah.

I just find it interesting the way music works and how seriously people take it. *Cue backlash*

• Comment number 2.

Yep, he's gonna have a brilliant Career, just like Joe McElderry.

• Comment number 3.

Is it just me who shouted at the TV when it said the single is called 'when we collide' - they changed to just to make it sound more commercial.

• Comment number 4.

Let's face it. The true winner of X Factor this year is Cher.

• Comment number 5.

Rebecca was robbed!
I honestly don't understand the hype that surrounded Matt (or Leon Brookstein as I am now going to call him) on the show, he was average.
He's now ruined a wonderful song.

• Comment number 6.

nope, stocksy i did it aswell

• Comment number 7.

EW. BLASPHEMY.

Cher Lloyd needs to have a reality check and stop sucking Cheryl's posterior. One moment shse's a rowdy, over-confident, arrogant 17-year old and the next she's a wobbling like a trifle in a hurricane.

GIRL PLEASE.

And for Matt? Well, from the minute he sung 'First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' it was obvious he was going to win. And I mean THAT OBVIOUS. So The X Factor this year was basically about the order in which people left, rather than who won.

Not very exciting, I think you'll agree.

• Comment number 8.

It's interesting that, as someone who doesn't watch the x factor, I'd never heard of Matt Cardle before yesterday, but I had often heard the names of several less successful (but probably more amusing) contestants - Cher, Wagner etc - shows how the media works around a show like this, and is probably part of the reason Matt will go on to a career every bit as glittering as Leon Jackson's.

The song itself was an average cut from a pretty decent album (like many I prefer the early Biffy) - it's probably very good exposure for the band, and they certainly deserve recognition, I just wish it was for one of their truly brilliant songs - 57, Day Of, even Golden Rule or Bubbles.

This version is bland, soulless and uninspiring.

• Comment number 9.

wait, before we all say he's medicore or average or any other word to lessen his talent, I refer to this:

Nuff Said.

• Comment number 10.

I refer particularly to 1:20 onwards.

• Comment number 11.

ON the rebecca front, I refer to this:

• Comment number 12.

On the Wagner front, I refer to this:

The Bongo solo brought tears to me eyes.

• Comment number 13.

Oh, and here's my review. My sentiments echo Fraser's, but I did watch the series, so I was very used to Matt's voice, unlike kind Fraser who must've felt like he'd been hit by a speeding train when he first heard Matt whimpering away.

• Comment number 14.

NO NO NO. YOU'RE DOING IT ALL WRONG.

You show 'em how it's done, Mr. Grimshaw.

• Comment number 15.

Katie Waissel was ROBBED.

• Comment number 16.

Why all but soles it up many of horror as a title and song was perfect as it was but according to Simon cowell it needed the westlife treatment and what do you know another self aggrandising karaoke chavtastic disaster of a song only winner this year as ever is that leather looking cowell and rihanna who managed to outshine the show in an effortless manner go her :)

• Comment number 17.

This comment has been referred for further consideration. Explain.

• Comment number 18.

POP! GOES MY HEART! (8)

Soz, a bit of 80's classisness over took me right there... although...

POP! Goes the point of winning the X Factor.

Simon's only gone and signed Rebecca Fergsuon, One Direction AND CHer Lloyd. Back to Tesco for Mary then...

• Comment number 19.

No surprise there. Simon will latch onto anyone from the show who he thinks will sell for him. The difference this time (and last year with Olly Murs) is he's snapped them up quickly to prevent other record labels getting there before him. And of course, it gives him a back-up plan if the winner flops - as with Olly and Joe.

A few years ago, he wasn't smart enough to notice that JLS were actually the most marketable act ever to come from X Factor, and had to watch another major label snap them up and make them successful instead. He doesn't want that to happen again so he's taking no chances any more.

• Comment number 20.

Can't sing!?! It's more like you can't hear.

Stay pressed and bitter. :D
Happy holidays!

Oh and you try singing with laryngitis during the semi-final and final.

• Comment number 21.

This comment was removed because the moderators found it broke the house rules. Explain.

• Comment number 22.

I very much understand your hate for the abomination that is the x-factor but to sound so bitter as to hack through a terribly written review with nothing but hate for this man just because he was on such a show is unnecessary. Matt Cardle does this song justice (I still, however, much prefer the original) his vocals were extremely impressive and most of your review seems to focus on a live performance wherein no singer can perform perfectly, yet you seem intent on cutting into every fine detail to make out that this man cannot sing where that is blatantly not the case. I actually created an account on here for the sole purpose of questioning your intentions. I see that this is listed as a review...this is NOT a review, it's a bitter rant that should have been posted on facebook or some other hormone driven website. You, sir, are a disgrace to review writers everywhere.

• Comment number 23.

I have to agree with your sentiments Mr McPowell.

The above is not a "review" of the song at all , just an attack at a live performance in which the singer has a serious throat infection .

There is NO mention of Matt's courage , bravery and spirit to cross over a finish line , when his dream is facing total desolation .

It is writing such as this and the apparent lack of inside knowledge of topics, that makes me not want to contribute here, as often anymore . Having a poisonous attack on a singer , whilst he has a serious illness, then reviewing THAT live performance , as though it was the real single , has made me very angry , personally and professionally .

As a music writer and a music fan , it is just WRONG , on SO many levels .

As a positive person ,and huge music lover , I do not want to spend time getting bogged down , with nonsense such as this .

Matt's version of The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face was the absolute highlight of this series for me and the moment in which I felt he would win .
A moving rendition . The boy SURE can sing . His performance was stunning .

Merry Christmas Everybody .

• Comment number 24.

Hi again spirit, thought you had left us for good.

Shame to hear you're not posting here much any more just because of the reviews. Is that even putting you off just joining us for discussion over in Jedward and everywhere else? Or is the general discussion of us regulars getting a bit too heated as well? Personally I just read the reviews once then discuss other things with the guys here, but fair enough. But it was only a few months ago you were saying how you loved this blog because of the passion and enthusiasm for music shown by everyone here!

Either way, it has been getting quieter and quieter here, and we haven't managed to get any new regulars for some time, despite our efforts. I don't blame you for not coming here as often when there's hardly anything going on here. If only this section of Radio 1's website was made more accessible and easier to find...

Anyway, thanks and Merry Christmas to you too

• Comment number 25.

SPIRIT! You're back! Whilst I'm not a particular fan of Matt's cover (I'm not even a Biffy Clyro fan, I would like to mention), I do like Matt the Singer very much, and I also disagree with how harsh Fraser's review is.

Problem is, Fraser reviewed the song as soon as Matt had won, or at best, the day after, and by then all that was circulating was the live performance; the official track didn't arise until Wednesday/Thursday at the earliest, so it was obviously going to have to be based on the live performance where yes, Matt was suffering a throat infection.

Another thing is, Matt really needs to get himself a vocal coach, not because he's a bad singer but just so he doesn't destroy his voice over time.

• Comment number 26.

I haven't heard the song, and I've never even heard the guy sing because I didn't watch any of this year's X Factor, so I can't comment on the song at all :) Quite a nice position to be in actually

• Comment number 27.

I really have to commend you guys on your obvious love of music and the sheer enthusiasm that you bring to this blog.

I have read all your comments on Jedward and your zest and energy is really inspiring . Loving all your lists and honest analysis .

You really are the lifeblood of this blog .

Although Jedward remains stronger than an ox on steroids , after 10 cups of coffee , I notice that the comments are dwindling in general .
I used to love the heated debates, love of music and general friendly banter that took the majority of reviews into the 30-50 comments arena .

Those were the days . (Although sometimes , it distracted me from what I should have been doing . lol )
I always defended this as music research and a great source of learning . Sometimes I would think I knew a topic and an artist , and you guys would open my eyes to some information or a different perspective , that made me think again .
Great stuff .

I will see what 2011 brings .
I love Radio 1 and for vocational purposes I HAVE to visit the website daily , as it provides valuable information and you guys provide valuable perspectives .

I just wish the "reviews" contained more information about the artists and the song but sometimes they don't discuss the song at all. It's frustrating , especially when you know how reviews should be done .
It is sometimes the Basil Fawlty school of reviewing . lol

Also certain songs fail to get reviews at all , despite being big selling TOP TEN HITS .

e.g Your Song - Ellie Goulding
Cooler Than Me - Mike Posner

Both songs were on the Radio 1 Playlist , were huge hits , had many requests by chartblog regulars to get a review , yet to no avail.

Chartblog commenters are the reason this blog gets comments and SHOULD ALWAYS BE VALUED .

To not give someone a reply . who has been commenting for a while , is something I cannot understand or begin to fathom and not the best or decent way to do things.

Chartblog should value ALL it's genuine contributors .
Let's see what 2011 brings .

Merry Xmas .

• Comment number 28.

Well said spirit! Though, not to ruffle Fraser's feathers, as there are only seven - six or even five if he misses out a day - in which he can review a single. Now, obviously, there are more than several single released each week and as a reviewer myself I often find it hard to choose which ones are top priority. But then again, big names and singles like Ellie Goulding's 'Your Song' and B.o.B.'s 'Magic' shouldn't really be omitted as they are clearly what people are/were buying.

And I also remember, despite only being here for little over a year, the healthy chart banter we used to get going. In fact, it was Fraser's ridiculously low rating of Mika's 'Rain' that encouraged me to join and the minute I did I got behind that song and enjoyed the spirit and enthusiasm to music you all shared. If I'm honest, half the reason I know as much as I do about today's popular music culture and why things like Chart Re-Enteries, surprise climbers, chart underperformers etc. occur is because of the people on this blog.

I've also learnt to see through thing like The X Factor, which a year ago I thought was harmless entertainment with semi-successful popstars - I didn't care about music so it didn't bother me - but 2008 had some of the best British music going and it got me interested to know more - and now I can see behind The X Factor and it's masquerading as a talent show. I can rationalise what happens in the charts and why artists often miss it. I feel I can structure a proper argument when it comes to music, because, above and before all else, I know about it now.

Thanks for all the help over the past year and a bit, guys. And yes, I would love to see a much more, without wanting to sound elitist but, 'professional' response in Fraser's reviews. Sure he's a funny guy and comes up with the most hilarious metaphors and raises a very valid criticism on occasion, but sometimes the response is far too personal; like his on-and-off relationship with Katy Perry - 3 stars!? For 'Teenage Dream'!? - or his seeming obsession with JLS - 5 stars!? - the appalling 'The Club Is Alive' AND the vapid 'Love You More'?! He must've been having an off day.

Yes, there are times when things call for a personal response like indeed, reviewing music, but there's a balance that's needed - a person employed by the ´óÏó´«Ã½ who gives an unfairly high rating to a song just because it's the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Children In Need Single is not showing good journalism.

• Comment number 29.

But spirit, if you don't like what we are discussing, why not start to talk about something else which you would like to discuss instead?

Earlier in the year though, there were much more regulars than there are now, and since Radio 1 altered the website's frontpage a few months ago, this blog has become harder to find, and thus casual visitors to this website are unlikely to stumble across this part of the website. It can't be just coincidence that since then, we have had less new users contributing here. We discussed this a few weeks ago in another thread actually, and one of the recent new users agreed that Chartblog wasn't easy to find.

Because of that, naturally there has been less discussion here, which doesn't help us.

• Comment number 30.

Kutox , I really enjoy reading what you are discussing .

• Comment number 31.

Oh ok, thanks, but you said "the comments are dwindling in general". Or come to think of it, did you mean in terms of the numbers rather than quality?

• Comment number 32.

Numbers , darling .

Apart from Jedward and now this one , the numbers are a pale shadow of the glory days .

I think we could all surmise why this is .

The saddest thing was reading how the lovely Bendtner pleaded for weeks to have a review of Your Song .

He is a huge Ellie Goulding fan , you know .

He was met by stony silence and still a lack of a review.
I was appalled at this , bearing in mind it reached number 2 and he is a Chartblog regular who SHOULD be valued .

It's not like Fraser is against covers , I have seen him performing a fine version of California Dreaming by The Mamas and The Papas , live on stage .

Your Song was Elton John's first solo single and Ellie's version was "a" listed at Radio 1 .

Is this site called Chartblog for a reason ???

• Comment number 33.

My present to Chartblog this year , will be a public relations course and a book on how to value it's contributors .

We all love you Bendtner/Nasri/Wenger/Gibbs/Clichy/Arshavin/Song/Fabianski/Almunia/Van Persie/Walcott .

Or whoever you choose to be . :)

• Comment number 34.

Although I don't particularly like Ellie's version of Your Song, I agree that it should of been reviewed here considering how big it has been, especially when songs like (with all respect) The Drums - 'Me And The Moon' and The Pretty Reckless - 'Just Tonight' have been reviewed here recently.

• Comment number 35.

spirit, we were talking about the diminishing numbers here, and the possible reasons why, just a few weeks ago. See comment #9 onwards in the Jessie J thread

• Comment number 36.

Awww, I feel so loved.

Great day for me, won a few contests.

The last time I remember Fraser replying was when he made a mistake on 'Cold War' by Janelle Monaé.

There is a reason he doesn't respond to us.

And here is why...

• Comment number 37.

Ha ha , Kutox .

It appears your arrival , signalled the end for Chartblog . lol

Thanks for all those comments guys , really sweet .

It seems that all the ideas put to Chartblog over the years are all met with silence .
It just appears so rude and devaluing.
One of the factors for my not wanting to comment anymore .

You guys are the true lifeblood of this site .

• Comment number 38.

I really would've loved Rebecca to win, her song sent shivers up my spine...but Matt is also a deserving winner in my view, one that was clearly the favourite with the majority of the X Factor's audience. This cover is nice, not his best vocal performance(Hit Me Baby One More Time, Knights in White Satin) but response to the "winner's song" is always intense and varied..I just cant wait to see what path he goes down musically in the future.

Also, does anyone else think this was far and away the best season talent-wise?? I'm not exactly surprised the final four were signed!!

Also apologies for the absence, I've become an avid scholar of medicine and so unfortunately I've been unable to comment on the reviews, but I've still been following and fair play to the regulars who have kept the blog going. :)

• Comment number 39.

Someone could set up a Zetaboard for us to all have music discussion on, I guess. Just a small forum.

• Comment number 40.

So Kingshleppy is now a scholar of medicine !

Well done !

To celebrate here is a medicine Top 10 ...

1) DOCTOR DOCTOR -THE THOMPSON TWINS
2) BAD MEDICINE - BON JOVI
3) DR JONES - AQUA
4) DOCTORIN THE TARDIS - TIME LORDS
5) DR BEAT - GLORIA ESTEFAN
6) DOCTOR PRESSURE - MYLO
7) TEMPERATURE - SEAN PAUL.
8) NIGHT NURSE - GREGORY ISAACS
9) TAKE ME TO THE HOSPITAL - THE PRODIGY.
10)A and E - GOLDFRAPP

@ 38

I don't think anyone can blame you for not visiting here often when you have such a career to focus on! Good luck with it all.

And nice work, spirit

• Comment number 42.

I'm gonna keep it Irish and give you all something to look up: The Blizzards, Trust me, I'm a Doctor. The theme tune to my LIFE!!:)

• Comment number 43.

The Blizzards are really good. Also check out the amazing ballad 'Postcards'.

Actually, OddOne, Mary is not going back to Tesco. She was on an Irish chatshow last week and announced that she was about to begin recording her new album. So it looks like we'll have Matt, Rebecca, One Direction, Cher AND Mary in the charts next year. Plus there's a Twitter campaign to get Aiden a record deal which will most likely succeed. X-Factor overload much?

• Comment number 44.

I don't take my comment about mary negativly, Randy! :L I only meant it lightheartedly because, at the end of the day, she's the only person in the final five from the X Factor that has a nice personality, or in Rebecca's case: a personality!

And your sentence about Aiden just made my day. I would LOVE him to do something very REM meets HURTS if you know what I mean; elements of electronic music, soft rock and pop/rock? I'd definite;y by his album as long as his record deal don't do what Syco did with Joe McElderry and auto-tune him to within an inch of his life because his voice didn't appear commercial.

• Comment number 45.

The Twitter campaign for Aiden has even got some press coverage

• Comment number 46.

You're JOKING!? This MUST succeed... Oh if only I could be bothered with joining Twitter!

• Comment number 47.

I've never bothered with Twitter either

• Comment number 48.

Yeah, I just don't get why it's that amazing? Wasn't there a huge backlash against how annoying it was on all the satirical comedy shows like Mock The Week back in 2008, when it's members nearly doubled?

I don't understand why anyone other than a tabloid celebrity would need one? It's basically Facebook status isn't? Only with Facebook statuses you can have 420 characters, not 140.

• Comment number 49.

I wonder if HTML tags will make my text bold...

• Comment number 50.

Oh, well that failed.

• Comment number 51.

ODDONE FAILS

• Comment number 52.

I'M SUPPORTING THIS!!

• Comment number 53.

@ 48

Twitter can be useful for musicians to update fans on immediate things, but as you said - it's mostly just a way for tabloid 'celebs' to keep their obsessive fans updated on every detail of their lives, like what they are having for lunch.

And I've never bothered with Facebook either!

• Comment number 54.

@52. LOLOLOOL

• Comment number 55.

It's not often threads in this blog reach 50 posts these days. Apart from Jedward, I think the last one to reach 100 comments was The Club Is Alive - now that thread was a great moment of discussion for this blog :)

• Comment number 56.

Agree Kutox ! A fantastic debate . We Bonded then , even though we had opposing viewpoints .

• Comment number 57.

Or the Mika - 'Rain' thread where I had a long and arduous debate with BloggingLiam about it being more than a two/three star song. That was a brilliant bit of debating, and was the main reason I kept returning in the first place :L

Ah, good times.

• Comment number 58.

2011 Predictions:

Jessie J to get a number one
Talay Riley to get a suprise top five with 'Seargent Smash'
Wretch 32 to get a number one with 'Traktor'

Next year will be the year when America finally loses its eerie grip on the chart.

Grenade will be one of the best selling songs of the year.

• Comment number 59.

On top of those Predictions:
Adele will sell equal to/ outsell her Debut '19'.
Florence will get a top 10 hit that isn't a cover
Rock Music will regain a good hold on the charts.
Album Sales will improve
JLS will finally FLOP
We may finally be joined by a lsting female presence on this blog

• Comment number 60.

2011 Predictions:

Future #1's:

> Bruno Mars - 'Grenade'

Future successes:

> White Lies will go Top 10 with sophomore album 'Ritual'.
> Ke$ha will have a #2 hit with 'We R Who We R', seconded only by Adele, who will hit #1 with 'Rolling In The Deep'.
> Katy Perry to go Top 10 with fourth release from 'Teenage Dream', 'E.T.'.
> HURTS will score their first Top 20 hit with 'Sunday'.

> Cheryl Cole will go Top 5 with 'The Flood'.
> Martin Solveig and Dragonette will go Top 20 with 'Hello'.
> Jessie J will garner many new fans (and maybe even myself) with the release of the B.o.B.-assisted 'Price Tag', on March 7.
> Katy B will have a #1 album, as will Bruno Mars, and Paloma Faith's follow-up as well.

Future flops (hate to use that word, and some of these releases I'd be happy to go on to receive chart success):

> Avril Lavigne - 'What The Hell?'
> Pendulum - 'Crush'
> Duffy - 'Keeping My Baby'
> 30 Seconds To Mars ft. Kanye West - 'Hurricane'
> Brandon Flowers - 'Jilted Lovers & Broken Hearts'
> James Blunt - 'So Far Gone'
> Alesha Dixon ft. Jay Sean - 'Every Little Part Of Me'
> Rachel Adedeji - 'Follow The DJ'
> Ruth Lorenzo - 'Burn'
> Jamiroquai - 'Lifeline'
> Taio Cruz ft. Kylie Minogue - 'Higher'
> Scissor Sisters - 'Invisible Light'
> Shayne Ward - 'Obsession'
> Nadine Coyle - 'Put Your Hands Up'
> The Ting Tings - 'We're Not The Same'
> Kanye West ft. everyone else - 'All Of The Lights'
> Shontelle - 'Perfect Nightmare'
> Shakira ft. Dizzee Rascal - 'Loca' (pulled AGAIN)
> Yasmin - 'On My Own'

Other areas of general interest:

> Take That will only have two more singles from 'Progress' because of it's success: 'Kidz' (already confirmed) and I'm guessing the third single will be 'SOS'.
> Pixie Lott will finally release 'Coming Home', her duet with Jason Derulo.
> Future BEP offerings from 'The Beginning' will miss the Top 40 completely.
> The Hoosiers will have a very strong re-release to 'The Illusion Of Safety' but will still go un-noticed by the media.
> Jessie J will be the only act on ´óÏó´«Ã½'s Sound of 2011 poll to have chart success.
> Single sales will be through the roof in the first two months of 2011, but will nose dive therein.
> Jedward won't be dropped, but won't have another musical assault until 2012. In this time, they will just appear on every reality TV show going.
> Florence + the Machine to crack America in half with her new album.
> Lady GaGa will have the fastest selling album of the last fifteen years with 'Born This Way'.

Big returns to the chart. In brackets are those who will most likely underperform:

> Little Boots
> Beyoncé
> (La Roux)
> David Guetta
> (Avril Lavigne)
> Will Young
> Christina Aguilera
> Britney Spears
> Leona Lewis
> (Marina & The Diamonds)
> Alexandra Burke
> Lady GaGa
> Matt Cardle
> Paloma Faith
> U2
> (The Feeling)
> Florence + the Machine
> Mika
> Coldplay
> (Sophie Ellis-Bextor)
> Franz Ferdinand

Omg and BTW! Have you heard!? Lady GaGa's Facebook update is quite something... she promises us a special secret will be revealed on New Year's Day! (I'm hoping for the name of the lead single from 'born This Way').

Oh, and I agree with Samir - America's stronghold will finally loosen on our charts, with just Britney, GaGa, and Beyoncé to contend with.

'Pixie Lott will finally release 'Coming Home', her duet with Jason Derulo'

In other news, hell has frozen over.

And Yasmin's 'On My Own' will NOT FLOP. It will be a massive song, trust me. After 'Runaway' with Devlin missed out on the eleven week number one it deserved, this will be big.

It's been in the pre-order top ten for a while now.

Finally, 'Higher' (Taio + Kylie) has been getting lots of commerical airplay... but as THE USA VERSION, which has TRAVIE MCCOY INSTEAD OF KYLIE!

Come its release we will have two top twenty songs on the itunes chart, because no-one will know which one to download. I still predict an overall top five.

I haven't even bothered to check the tracklisting for 'The Beginning'.

--------------------------------------------

All kanye songs from now on will flop because anyone who likes them already has Dark Twisted Fantasy, and everyone else HAS NO TASTE IN MUSIC.

Yep, that's what's great about the heated debates here - we get our points across without bashing each other. On some forums, you just get people saying things like "OMG that song is rubbish, you must be an idiot if you like it" and "that music is so lame, I only listen to cool hipster music, my taste is far superior to yours", then when you try and debate with them, you just get the same replies over and over again. But here we actually get some constructive discussion going.

I was thinking about the possible January chart battle between Adele and Kesha a few days ago. But as much as I can't fault Adele's new song - and I do think it's brilliant - it just doesn't sound like a big chart hit to me, like Chasing Pavements was, or like Mercy was for Duffy. I could be completely wrong of course, but either way, I'm sure it will reach the top 10, and most importantly get a lot of people interested in her new album.

I actually really like Kesha's new song too. I know I've been critical of her in the past, but I don't think she's as talentless as many people say. For all her faults, she does know how to make a catchy, infectious tune and does have something about her which makes some of her songs quite thrilling - and We R Who We R is one of them. Unfortunately it does have a negative, grating effect on some her other songs, but that's just her, isn't it?

• Comment number 65.

Exactly! I was thinking the same thing and I can't help but be overly optomistic about this years music! There are so many brilliant acts scheduled to return to the charts this year that it just can't be as bad as last year!

And whilst I feel the samde about Adele's 'Rolling In The Deep', it'll have been A-Listed for 5 weeks when the release finally comes - and it jumped straight onto the B-List as well.

On Ke$ha, I can't help but love her - 'TiK ToK' and 'Blah Blah Blah' are alright, but it's songs like 'Your Love Is My Drug', 'Take It Off', 'We R Who We R' and possible second single from 'Cannibal' - 'Blow' (AMAZING) where she excels - the hooks are countless!

And she really can sing - she just recognises her niché in the music industry but hopefully, she'll take a much more "natural" direction with her next album, just look at this link:

[Unsuitable/Broken URL removed by Moderator]

See? Apart from the guy in the back, wasn't that quite surprising to find out she's got a good set of pipes on her after all?

I'm still very optomistic that people will welcome Adele back with open arms, unlike the shun they gave Duffy. Because 'Rolling In The Deep' is so much better than 'Well, Well, Well', and the fact that 'Make You Feel My Love' has got the public interested in Adele more recently, she's chosen exactly the right time to release so I see big things for 'Rolling In The Deep'.

Oh darn. Please, Moderators! It's Christmas!

Pwease?

• Comment number 67.

I missed the comment. Are you off offending people again? :P

To be fair to the moderators, we have been giving them a lot of work by posting in this blog so often. They must be sick of reading through all our comments every day!

• Comment number 68.

Well, it's an obligation they must do because it's what comes in the job description. And if you ask me, posting a bit more than regularly in just two different threads (this one and Jedward) is hardly often.

And no, it was just discussing further about the upcoming chart battle between Adele and Ke$ha, and then a link to a video of Ke$ha singing 'Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas' on a rooftop in Moscow, but there was something very Ke$ha-fied about the video which is what I'm guessing the Moderators picked up on. :(

• Comment number 69.

I swear you have to be 16+ to use ´óÏó´«Ã½ ID anyway, so come on...

And I think Ke$ha will beat Adele. I would love Adele to get the number one but I can't see it happening.

It will just be loads of little 12 year olds singing '2NITE WE GOIN HA HA HA HA HA HARD'

The kesha song is quite good though :p

• Comment number 70.

I adore Adele 's new single . Absolutely fantastic and a sure fire hit !

• Comment number 71.

So yes Oddie . The moderators DO work on Boxing Day ! Ha .

• Comment number 72.

I know it's the moderators' job etc, but with us posting here almost everyday, there isn't a day off!

I too think Kesha will get her first uk no.1, if it turns out to be a head-to-head with her and Adele. Kesha is more commercially-driven than Adele - Kesha is expected to reach high chart positions with her songs, whereas I think if Adele's new single reaches the top 10 it will be seen as a success, plus she's more about the album.

• Comment number 73.

Wow.

The biggest selling song of 2010... never got a number one.

• Comment number 74.

Yes Adele's new album will have substantial company backing . They know its a corker .

• Comment number 75.

And can anyone tell me who , on the Love The Way You Lie thread , said that it would be the biggest selling single of the year ? Must have been some predicting genius .

• Comment number 76.

Or... It could've been a very obvious fact that could've been predicted by anyone from the moment the song leaked?

Mind you, it hasn't aged well for me - it's awful now. Since 'Recovery' is drier than the pages Eminem wrote the lyrics on, it's no wonder he felt the need to have to collaborate with the people he did - he neede then to inject some life into his pathetically self-hating lyrics.

One half of the album was "I've finally found out who I want to be", and the other half was "My other albums were trash". In fact, the more we heard him remind us of that, the more and more the very life and originality of the album was strangled out.

Oh, and to save time - The Black Eyed Peas' new album is absolutely diabolical. They sample 'Give It Up' for God's sake! That song should be UNTOUCHABLE to will.i.am's dirty paws. :@

• Comment number 77.

Oh Oddie darlin , give credit where its due . Predicting the biggest selling single of the year is not an easy job . It really took it out of me. Lord knows what I have to do to impress you. Send Hurts round to play a gig in your bedroom maybe ? Would you love me then ?

• Comment number 78.

That would of been impressive, spirit, if you hadn't 'predicted' it at a time when the song was already well on it's way to becoming the year's best-seller! If you made that prediction before it was released, that would of been different.

Before Owl City's Fireflies was released, I thought it would be a no.1 and one of the best-selling songs of the year, and it has turned out to be. I didn't make that guess after it had been no.1 for 3 weeks!

• Comment number 79.

Ok then . Who can name the biggest selling single in the Uk ever , that NEVER got to number 1 ?

• Comment number 80.

Wham - Last Christmas ?

I haven't just looked it up, by the way. Not sure if it's correct, but I'm sure I heard it mentioned on the radio sometime last year.

• Comment number 81.

Gold star for the Kute Guy !

YES!

• Comment number 83.

Hehe ;) I will reward myself with yet more chocolate and mince pies

• Comment number 84.

I baked my own mince pies this year. Then, rather oddly, I made some jam tarts too. :DD

• Comment number 85.

If you are what you eat Oddie . You are am absolute tart . ;)

• Comment number 86.

A tart who likes to mince too !

• Comment number 87.

LOL! I'm actually laughing my socks off!

I really did step right into that one though, didn't I? :L:L:L

• Comment number 88.

We make our own mince pies every year (I don't do them all by myself though ;) Some years they turn out better than others, and I absolutely HATE the orange peel which is a real problem, but it's something we've always done, and it makes us feel all Christmassy at the start of December when we make them.

Last year we even made our own mincemeat to get round the orange peel problem. We followed the recipe from this book I bought, but there was so much of every ingredient that we ended up with well over 100 mince pies - bear in mind only 3 of us in the house actually eat them.

• Comment number 89.

Is the Kute guy really Delia Smith in disguise ? Lets be having you !

• Comment number 90.

Oh gosh, I remember that so clearly...

Actually, I do no cooking at all, I'm ashamed to say. I'm terrible with food - I hardly eat anything. Helping out with mince pies is my limit. I make my own sandwiches, if that counts...

• Comment number 91.

Well I am just about to eat my seventh christmas dinner in 3 days . Have to please so many people .

• Comment number 92.

WOAH.First time I read that I swear it said "seventeenth". I nearly fell off my chair!

spirit's going to be a right little porker in the new year, am I right? Better get down the gym with Randy, eh, eh? :L:L

• Comment number 93.

Its ok Oddie . I have four 10k races in February and a half marathon in March , so I am already in training . Plus I enjoy dancing in clubs at least twice a week - My stomach is flatter than than the roads in Amsterdam , after a 1000 steam rollers have had a sight seeing tour and sampled EVERY delight .
