If you've not watched the series it's fairly understandable that you don't think he can sing. However bearing in mind he had Tonsilitis (how severe we don't know - very according to the show but it's difficult to tell really) a mere week or two ago, he's not really on top form at the moment. In the earlier weeks he was much more secure and really is quite a vocal talent in my opinion, albeit one in dire need of proper training so he doesn't wreck his voice.

He's also somebody who, at 27, has given the "real music" thing a fairly good shot, something Biffy Clyro would no doubt empathise with, since I know a guy who used to be on the gigging circuit with them back in the 90s and they've only just hit the outskirts of maintream consciousness. With that in mind, he's somewhat reminiscent of David Cook, in that he blurs the lines of what's credible and what isn't. If the band he'd released an album with earlier this year had taken off, they'd quite happily play him on XFM and the like, but because he appeared on a TV show, he'll be a musical pariah.

I just find it interesting the way music works and how seriously people take it. *Cue backlash*

Yep, he's gonna have a brilliant Career, just like Joe McElderry.

Is it just me who shouted at the TV when it said the single is called 'when we collide' - they changed to just to make it sound more commercial.

Let's face it. The true winner of X Factor this year is Cher.

I honestly don't understand the hype that surrounded Matt (or Leon Brookstein as I am now going to call him) on the show, he was average.

And for Matt? Well, from the minute he sung 'First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' it was obvious he was going to win. And I mean THAT OBVIOUS. So The X Factor this year was basically about the order in which people left, rather than who won.

Not very exciting, I think you'll agree.

It's interesting that, as someone who doesn't watch the x factor, I'd never heard of Matt Cardle before yesterday, but I had often heard the names of several less successful (but probably more amusing) contestants - Cher, Wagner etc - shows how the media works around a show like this, and is probably part of the reason Matt will go on to a career every bit as glittering as Leon Jackson's.

The song itself was an average cut from a pretty decent album (like many I prefer the early Biffy) - it's probably very good exposure for the band, and they certainly deserve recognition, I just wish it was for one of their truly brilliant songs - 57, Day Of, even Golden Rule or Bubbles.

This version is bland, soulless and uninspiring.

Oh, and here's my review. My sentiments echo Fraser's, but I did watch the series, so I was very used to Matt's voice, unlike kind Fraser who must've felt like he'd been hit by a speeding train when he first heard Matt whimpering away.

No surprise there. Simon will latch onto anyone from the show who he thinks will sell for him. The difference this time (and last year with Olly Murs) is he's snapped them up quickly to prevent other record labels getting there before him. And of course, it gives him a back-up plan if the winner flops - as with Olly and Joe.

A few years ago, he wasn't smart enough to notice that JLS were actually the most marketable act ever to come from X Factor, and had to watch another major label snap them up and make them successful instead. He doesn't want that to happen again so he's taking no chances any more.

Can't sing!?! It's more like you can't hear.

I very much understand your hate for the abomination that is the x-factor but to sound so bitter as to hack through a terribly written review with nothing but hate for this man just because he was on such a show is unnecessary. Matt Cardle does this song justice (I still, however, much prefer the original) his vocals were extremely impressive and most of your review seems to focus on a live performance wherein no singer can perform perfectly, yet you seem intent on cutting into every fine detail to make out that this man cannot sing where that is blatantly not the case. I actually created an account on here for the sole purpose of questioning your intentions. I see that this is listed as a review...this is NOT a review, it's a bitter rant that should have been posted on facebook or some other hormone driven website. You, sir, are a disgrace to review writers everywhere.

The above is not a "review" of the song at all , just an attack at a live performance in which the singer has a serious throat infection .

There is NO mention of Matt's courage , bravery and spirit to cross over a finish line , when his dream is facing total desolation .

It is writing such as this and the apparent lack of inside knowledge of topics, that makes me not want to contribute here, as often anymore . Having a poisonous attack on a singer , whilst he has a serious illness, then reviewing THAT live performance , as though it was the real single , has made me very angry , personally and professionally .

As a music writer and a music fan , it is just WRONG , on SO many levels .

As a positive person ,and huge music lover , I do not want to spend time getting bogged down , with nonsense such as this .

Matt's version of The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face was the absolute highlight of this series for me and the moment in which I felt he would win .

Shame to hear you're not posting here much any more just because of the reviews. Is that even putting you off just joining us for discussion over in Jedward and everywhere else? Or is the general discussion of us regulars getting a bit too heated as well? Personally I just read the reviews once then discuss other things with the guys here, but fair enough. But it was only a few months ago you were saying how you loved this blog because of the passion and enthusiasm for music shown by everyone here!

Either way, it has been getting quieter and quieter here, and we haven't managed to get any new regulars for some time, despite our efforts. I don't blame you for not coming here as often when there's hardly anything going on here. If only this section of Radio 1's website was made more accessible and easier to find...

SPIRIT! You're back! Whilst I'm not a particular fan of Matt's cover (I'm not even a Biffy Clyro fan, I would like to mention), I do like Matt the Singer very much, and I also disagree with how harsh Fraser's review is.

Problem is, Fraser reviewed the song as soon as Matt had won, or at best, the day after, and by then all that was circulating was the live performance; the official track didn't arise until Wednesday/Thursday at the earliest, so it was obviously going to have to be based on the live performance where yes, Matt was suffering a throat infection.


Another thing is, Matt really needs to get himself a vocal coach, not because he's a bad singer but just so he doesn't destroy his voice over time.

I haven't heard the song, and I've never even heard the guy sing because I didn't watch any of this year's X Factor, so I can't comment on the song at all :) Quite a nice position to be in actually

I really have to commend you guys on your obvious love of music and the sheer enthusiasm that you bring to this blog.

Although Jedward remains stronger than an ox on steroids , after 10 cups of coffee , I notice that the comments are dwindling in general .
I used to love the heated debates, love of music and general friendly banter that took the majority of reviews into the 30-50 comments arena .

Those were the days . (Although sometimes , it distracted me from what I should have been doing . lol )
I always defended this as music research and a great source of learning . Sometimes I would think I knew a topic and an artist , and you guys would open my eyes to some information or a different perspective , that made me think again .
Great stuff .

I love Radio 1 and for vocational purposes I HAVE to visit the website daily , as it provides valuable information and you guys provide valuable perspectives .

I just wish the "reviews" contained more information about the artists and the song but sometimes they don't discuss the song at all. It's frustrating , especially when you know how reviews should be done .
It is sometimes the Basil Fawlty school of reviewing . lol


Also certain songs fail to get reviews at all , despite being big selling TOP TEN HITS .

Both songs were on the Radio 1 Playlist , were huge hits , had many requests by chartblog regulars to get a review , yet to no avail.

Chartblog commenters are the reason this blog gets comments and SHOULD ALWAYS BE VALUED .

To not give someone a reply . who has been commenting for a while , is something I cannot understand or begin to fathom and not the best or decent way to do things.

Chartblog should value ALL it's genuine contributors .

Well said spirit! Though, not to ruffle Fraser's feathers, as there are only seven - six or even five if he misses out a day - in which he can review a single. Now, obviously, there are more than several single released each week and as a reviewer myself I often find it hard to choose which ones are top priority. But then again, big names and singles like Ellie Goulding's 'Your Song' and B.o.B.'s 'Magic' shouldn't really be omitted as they are clearly what people are/were buying.

And I also remember, despite only being here for little over a year, the healthy chart banter we used to get going. In fact, it was Fraser's ridiculously low rating of Mika's 'Rain' that encouraged me to join and the minute I did I got behind that song and enjoyed the spirit and enthusiasm to music you all shared. If I'm honest, half the reason I know as much as I do about today's popular music culture and why things like Chart Re-Enteries, surprise climbers, chart underperformers etc. occur is because of the people on this blog.

I've also learnt to see through thing like The X Factor, which a year ago I thought was harmless entertainment with semi-successful popstars - I didn't care about music so it didn't bother me - but 2008 had some of the best British music going and it got me interested to know more - and now I can see behind The X Factor and it's masquerading as a talent show. I can rationalise what happens in the charts and why artists often miss it. I feel I can structure a proper argument when it comes to music, because, above and before all else, I know about it now.

Thanks for all the help over the past year and a bit, guys. And yes, I would love to see a much more, without wanting to sound elitist but, 'professional' response in Fraser's reviews. Sure he's a funny guy and comes up with the most hilarious metaphors and raises a very valid criticism on occasion, but sometimes the response is far too personal; like his on-and-off relationship with Katy Perry - 3 stars!? For 'Teenage Dream'!? - or his seeming obsession with JLS - 5 stars!? - the appalling 'The Club Is Alive' AND the vapid 'Love You More'?! He must've been having an off day.

Yes, there are times when things call for a personal response like indeed, reviewing music, but there's a balance that's needed - a person employed by the ´óÏó´«Ã½ who gives an unfairly high rating to a song just because it's the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Children In Need Single is not showing good journalism.

But spirit, if you don't like what we are discussing, why not start to talk about something else which you would like to discuss instead?

Earlier in the year though, there were much more regulars than there are now, and since Radio 1 altered the website's frontpage a few months ago, this blog has become harder to find, and thus casual visitors to this website are unlikely to stumble across this part of the website. It can't be just coincidence that since then, we have had less new users contributing here. We discussed this a few weeks ago in another thread actually, and one of the recent new users agreed that Chartblog wasn't easy to find.

Because of that, naturally there has been less discussion here, which doesn't help us.

I was appalled at this , bearing in mind it reached number 2 and he is a Chartblog regular who SHOULD be valued .

It's not like Fraser is against covers , I have seen him performing a fine version of California Dreaming by The Mamas and The Papas , live on stage .

Although I don't particularly like Ellie's version of Your Song, I agree that it should of been reviewed here considering how big it has been, especially when songs like (with all respect) The Drums - 'Me And The Moon' and The Pretty Reckless - 'Just Tonight' have been reviewed here recently.

I really would've loved Rebecca to win, her song sent shivers up my spine...but Matt is also a deserving winner in my view, one that was clearly the favourite with the majority of the X Factor's audience. This cover is nice, not his best vocal performance(Hit Me Baby One More Time, Knights in White Satin) but response to the "winner's song" is always intense and varied..I just cant wait to see what path he goes down musically in the future.

Also, does anyone else think this was far and away the best season talent-wise?? I'm not exactly surprised the final four were signed!!

Twitter can be useful for musicians to update fans on immediate things, but as you said - it's mostly just a way for tabloid 'celebs' to keep their obsessive fans updated on every detail of their lives, like what they are having for lunch.

It's been in the pre-order top ten for a while now.

Finally, 'Higher' (Taio + Kylie) has been getting lots of commerical airplay... but as THE USA VERSION, which has TRAVIE MCCOY INSTEAD OF KYLIE!

Come its release we will have two top twenty songs on the itunes chart, because no-one will know which one to download. I still predict an overall top five.

I haven't even bothered to check the tracklisting for 'The Beginning'.

Yep, that's what's great about the heated debates here - we get our points across without bashing each other. On some forums, you just get people saying things like "OMG that song is rubbish, you must be an idiot if you like it" and "that music is so lame, I only listen to cool hipster music, my taste is far superior to yours", then when you try and debate with them, you just get the same replies over and over again. But here we actually get some constructive discussion going.

I was thinking about the possible January chart battle between Adele and Kesha a few days ago. But as much as I can't fault Adele's new song - and I do think it's brilliant - it just doesn't sound like a big chart hit to me, like Chasing Pavements was, or like Mercy was for Duffy. I could be completely wrong of course, but either way, I'm sure it will reach the top 10, and most importantly get a lot of people interested in her new album.

I actually really like Kesha's new song too. I know I've been critical of her in the past, but I don't think she's as talentless as many people say. For all her faults, she does know how to make a catchy, infectious tune and does have something about her which makes some of her songs quite thrilling - and We R Who We R is one of them. Unfortunately it does have a negative, grating effect on some her other songs, but that's just her, isn't it?

Exactly! I was thinking the same thing and I can't help but be overly optomistic about this years music! There are so many brilliant acts scheduled to return to the charts this year that it just can't be as bad as last year!

And whilst I feel the samde about Adele's 'Rolling In The Deep', it'll have been A-Listed for 5 weeks when the release finally comes - and it jumped straight onto the B-List as well.

On Ke$ha, I can't help but love her - 'TiK ToK' and 'Blah Blah Blah' are alright, but it's songs like 'Your Love Is My Drug', 'Take It Off', 'We R Who We R' and possible second single from 'Cannibal' - 'Blow' (AMAZING) where she excels - the hooks are countless!

And she really can sing - she just recognises her niché in the music industry but hopefully, she'll take a much more "natural" direction with her next album, just look at this link:

I'm still very optomistic that people will welcome Adele back with open arms, unlike the shun they gave Duffy. Because 'Rolling In The Deep' is so much better than 'Well, Well, Well', and the fact that 'Make You Feel My Love' has got the public interested in Adele more recently, she's chosen exactly the right time to release so I see big things for 'Rolling In The Deep'.

To be fair to the moderators, we have been giving them a lot of work by posting in this blog so often. They must be sick of reading through all our comments every day!

Well, it's an obligation they must do because it's what comes in the job description. And if you ask me, posting a bit more than regularly in just two different threads (this one and Jedward) is hardly often.

And no, it was just discussing further about the upcoming chart battle between Adele and Ke$ha, and then a link to a video of Ke$ha singing 'Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas' on a rooftop in Moscow, but there was something very Ke$ha-fied about the video which is what I'm guessing the Moderators picked up on. :(

I swear you have to be 16+ to use ´óÏó´«Ã½ ID anyway, so come on...

And I think Ke$ha will beat Adele. I would love Adele to get the number one but I can't see it happening.

I too think Kesha will get her first uk no.1, if it turns out to be a head-to-head with her and Adele. Kesha is more commercially-driven than Adele - Kesha is expected to reach high chart positions with her songs, whereas I think if Adele's new single reaches the top 10 it will be seen as a success, plus she's more about the album.

Or... It could've been a very obvious fact that could've been predicted by anyone from the moment the song leaked?

Mind you, it hasn't aged well for me - it's awful now. Since 'Recovery' is drier than the pages Eminem wrote the lyrics on, it's no wonder he felt the need to have to collaborate with the people he did - he neede then to inject some life into his pathetically self-hating lyrics.

One half of the album was "I've finally found out who I want to be", and the other half was "My other albums were trash". In fact, the more we heard him remind us of that, the more and more the very life and originality of the album was strangled out.

Oh, and to save time - The Black Eyed Peas' new album is absolutely diabolical. They sample 'Give It Up' for God's sake! That song should be UNTOUCHABLE to will.i.am's dirty paws. :@

Oh Oddie darlin , give credit where its due . Predicting the biggest selling single of the year is not an easy job . It really took it out of me. Lord knows what I have to do to impress you. Send Hurts round to play a gig in your bedroom maybe ? Would you love me then ?

That would of been impressive, spirit, if you hadn't 'predicted' it at a time when the song was already well on it's way to becoming the year's best-seller! If you made that prediction before it was released, that would of been different.

Before Owl City's Fireflies was released, I thought it would be a no.1 and one of the best-selling songs of the year, and it has turned out to be. I didn't make that guess after it had been no.1 for 3 weeks!

Ok then . Who can name the biggest selling single in the Uk ever , that NEVER got to number 1 ?

I baked my own mince pies this year. Then, rather oddly, I made some jam tarts too. :DD

We make our own mince pies every year (I don't do them all by myself though ;) Some years they turn out better than others, and I absolutely HATE the orange peel which is a real problem, but it's something we've always done, and it makes us feel all Christmassy at the start of December when we make them.

Last year we even made our own mincemeat to get round the orange peel problem. We followed the recipe from this book I bought, but there was so much of every ingredient that we ended up with well over 100 mince pies - bear in mind only 3 of us in the house actually eat them.

Actually, I do no cooking at all, I'm ashamed to say. I'm terrible with food - I hardly eat anything. Helping out with mince pies is my limit. I make my own sandwiches, if that counts...

Its ok Oddie . I have four 10k races in February and a half marathon in March , so I am already in training . Plus I enjoy dancing in clubs at least twice a week - My stomach is flatter than than the roads in Amsterdam , after a 1000 steam rollers have had a sight seeing tour and sampled EVERY delight .
