HOW CAN IT ALREADY BE WENSLEYDALE,

Chris Evans | 07:52 UK time, Wednesday, 18 October 2006

In bed, it鈥檚 dark outside, I am so snuggled up and cosy, I love it.

Now here鈥檚 a turnip for the books. GIRL ON SOFA ALERT! A mate of mine came over for a drink and my monthly viewing of Arthur, the funniest and saddest and quietly cleverest film I know, anyways it gets to bed time and we鈥檇 鈥渂oth鈥 fallen asleep before the end. So she then fights me, not for the bed but for the sofa.

鈥淵ou always give up your bed for me.鈥

鈥淏ut you鈥檙e a girl and I really don鈥檛 mind the sofa.鈥

Anyway she wasn鈥檛 having any of it and I was dog tired so, here I am and I presume there she still is. I鈥檒l just go and check鈥

...yup she鈥檚 still there !

evans_girlonsofa.jpgT. is the psychologist I may have told you about in the past. She also loves golf, she plays more than me, I think she鈥檚 playing at Wentworth today. She is also a student of the Telegraph crossword, (I know she sounds perfect), her most satisfying conquest to date:
Record that winner breaks (4)
_ _ _ _

I鈥檒l leave it with you.

We were discussing our favourite clues last night. I think one of the best ever is this, it was one across years ago and here's how it appeared.

1. 鈥 !鈥 (6,3,1,4)

I鈥檒l leave you with that one as well, it鈥檚 a killer. I spent ages on it and still had to be told the answer.

Now, remember they鈥檙e both cryptic and don鈥檛 give me the whine,

鈥淏ut my brain doesn鈥檛 work like that.鈥

Of course it does if you ask it to, it鈥檚 just that it hurts a bit more. It鈥檚 like saying my legs don鈥檛 naturally run, they walk. It just takes EFFORT ! Ha ha.

Feeling pretty good already today and it鈥檚 not even half seven.

The talk at the B.B.C. yesterday went very well. Jeremy Vine interviewed me in front of a load of nice and friendly and enthusiastic B.B.C. employees. I ended up saying things I didn鈥檛 even knew I thought. That鈥檚 why it鈥檚 good to do things that take you out of your comfort zone. I had a warm feeling of fulfilment for the rest of the day.

Then it was Russell Brand鈥檚 turn to be quizzed by The Vine. Russell was very very funny, he seemed totally at ease with himself. At one point he said a brilliant thing, he said,

鈥淭he reason I don鈥檛 worry about saying some of the things I say is because I鈥檓 being honest, it鈥檚 what I think, so it can never trip me up, I鈥檓 not saying it for effect.鈥 I really liked that.

The only time he seemed to be slightly knocked off course was when Jeremy asked him about why he worked on such a soul destroying programme as Big Brother when he鈥檚 obviously so much better than that, it was the only moment in the whole afternoon he struggled for an answer.

Why involve yourself in things that are not worthy of your loveliness ?

We all do it, not just Russell and we must all stop.

x

Ahh, the GIRL ON THE SOFA鈥橲 JUST BROUGHT ME A CUP OF TEA, she can stay again.

As for the second one, blowed if I know.

I don't like cryptic stuff - possibly cos it's like maths and I just don't understand it - but then have blinding moments of clarity.

Another not-so-fun day today, pre-empted by me getting out of bed the wrong side this am. Maybe should try a sofa, then I have no choice as to which side I fall out of. Poor huzzband got it in the ear, but was a good girl and apologised.

Loved Viney's MP3 nonsense last night, and have to say a massive thankyou for the gobsmacker - Motorcycle Emptiness.

Was in the living room in pjs putting Squiggly Pig's bath stuff away when it came on. We have a large window and no nets, so turned the TV up a bit, and had a jolly old bop around the room, only to look up and see people wandering past staring at me like I'd gone insane.

D'you know what? I smiled and waved. It was ace.

Keep up the goodness, and we'll be tuning in around 5pm as we pick up her Pigness.

Tea in bed? You lucky thing, I only get that if I get up and make it and take it back with me. That's my Sunday morning treat with the papers and some lovely marmitey crumpets.

Thought the show last night was excellent, Jeremy Vine's MP3/Ipod was fab. I had a great time driving home to Derby singing to myself - I always wonder if everyone else is doing the same - half of them look so miserable or like they'll implode if they don't overtake this car and that car. Really I'd rather get there 5 mins later, in one piece and relaxed.

Another foggy day in Nottingham, hoping it clears for a lunchtime walkies. Nearly half way through the week - hurrah, curry night at the pub tonight - double hurrah,

A top girl who makes you tea in the morning doesn't steal your bed, plays golf and does crosswords.... seems like a match made in heaven but no doubt that's for you to decide not us. I know just what you mean about saying things you never realised you thought in answer to questions you don't expect. That's what makes conversations so important. Different people inspire varying parts of your personality to come to life, don't you think? Maybe we operate in something like a honey-comb, touching certain people with one side of the cell, others with another side and so on - and they're constructed in the same way. Hard to explain, will have to work out how to.... Cryptic like the crossies.

Peeping at reading material of fellow passengers on a train, I saw headline 'Pieces of Me' and pics showing some of writer's possessions, e.g. favourite trainers etc. How odd! I thought. Not 'pieces of me', just the way this person expresses himself. Dreadful to be judged by possessions, eh?

I got into crosswords when i was about 23 and got bored by about 24 - went out with a stockbroker seemed to be mandatory. I found many of the clues became repetetive and my brain doesnt work on cryptic clues far to logical. My first answer to your clue was Goal - see far to logical. Anyway then i discovered chess, drafts, backgammon and Risk oh yes what a game. Risk is just the best game ever but be prepared for an allnighter or put the game down go to bed and tackle it the next day. Always play against someone who knows what they are doing so then it is a complete challenge.

Anyway on to Robin Hood we are having a debate at work on this new programme and people seem to think its just not working for them - there also seems to be a problem with the women here fancying Guy of Gisbon (Richard Armitage) instead of Robin Hood which is completely understandably as Mr Armitage in my eyes could easily be the next Darcy.

I love the idea of taking yourself out of your comfort zone there is such a satisfying feeling when you start to talk about things you never realised where there resting in your unconscious.

You might be having a down day, but come on! He does not have to think you are attractive just because he is married to you, and in no way is your dismissal of his feelings or views an attractive attitude!

Getting a second look in the street may boost your self image for a wee while but just imagine all the reasons they might be looking 鈥 you haven鈥檛 wiped your nose properly, you have a ketchup stain on your blouse that looks like Jesus etc,鈥. It鈥檚 all surface, not actually about you at all.

Personally I think that the 鈥榓ttractive-ness鈥 of a person grows the more I get to know them and the more I find out about their attributes as a person, their funny side, their caring side, their vulnerabilities, and their achievements etc,.

The fact that your husband knows all of you, and still loves you and finds you attractive is to be treasured, as you obviously are by him.

Take a leaf out of his book, smile at your self in the mirror and try to love yourself. Self-worth is a great way to radiate attractiveness and sexiness, if you think you're worth it why wouldn't everyone else?!

Talking of films, I note on 大象传媒 news today that Londoners can pay up to 拢17.50 for a cinema ticket. Good grief !

Someone put me on to a remarkable film called "Downfall" about the last few days of the Third Reich, based on memoirs of one of Hitler's secrataries, which has run on More4 lots of times. It's in German with subtitles but absolutely superb. Now one of my firm faves. I bought the double-DVD version (which is only 2-squid more than the single disk version on certain sites) and it is one of the few "extra bits" I really enjoyed. The background documentaries were fascinating.

Fibs / Truth. I have a pathalogical hatred of fibs. They push my buttons I'm afraid. I can accept that there are circumstances when a "diplomatic fib" is necessary but for the most part........ When I was younger, I wasn't actually taught what a fib was so when Primary-1 teacher asked me what I was laughing at "Your dreadful piano playing, it sounds like an elephant dancing on the keys"; she asked, I answered, why did I get put in to the corner? In the early stages of learning to "take my drink" I used to revert back to absolute-truth when under the influence. Not the "I've never liked you...." crap but "Do you like my new dress".... "No, it's horrible. My gran has a pair of curtains that look like that" (OK OK, you can be too truthful sometimes). Thankfully as I got older I learnt to control it (well mostly)

I see today (he says Apropos about nothing)
we have our first case of "Web rage" (or at least the 1st "flame war" that has ended up in court)

and I wasn't sure whether to laugh or feel sorry for the poor guy who put an elbow thru this $139m Picasso (actually, that's a fib - blush, but I DID feel sorry for him once I read why it happened)

I still cringe at the memory of the day the CEO handed me a bundle of papers and said "Tear that to bits for me". I couldn't work out why he stared at me when I tore it up and put it in the recycle bin (wondering at the time 'Why couldn't HE have done that")

#61 Hazel Love Thank you for that. I always thought that escalator was a derivative of escalate which goes up. Descalator didn't have the same ring (or indeed "plummeter" as someone in the pub suggested for the opposite)

#57 Helen Melon : you are welcome. However (and doesn鈥檛 there always have to
be one), I didn鈥檛 think that being at the bottom of a Web-page stopped you typing
in a new web-address. Your mileage may vary. On my version of Internet Explorer,
the address-bar is still there at the top, regardless of how far down the page you
scroll. I WAS going to suggest the alternative of opening another browser window,
using File then NewWindow (or CTRL-N; hold the control button and press N) but
when I tried it I got an exact copy of the page I had loaded, which was also down
at the bottom. I can鈥檛 remember how to stop it doing that because I鈥檓 more used
to the Firefox browser. If you are using the Firefox browser you can open a new
tab rather than a new window. Tabs are opened to the side of the current
web-page opened and so don鈥檛 fill up your task bar at the bottom.
Tabs will be coming to a future version of Internet Explorer and I 鈥渕iss鈥
them when am forced back to Internet Explorer. I HIGHLY recommend Firefox,
free download from www.mozillan.com/firefox amongst others. Go to Google and
type Firefox for a list of links

"Supper". Up here (north of the border), supper was always what you had before you went to bed.
It is of course also used in chippies to mean "with chips" (I assume that is a National thing and not a Scottish thing, it鈥檚 so long since I鈥檝e been south of the Border I can鈥檛 remember). Dinner is dependant on where you are I think. The posh people have lunch before the afternoon and then dinner at night; as kids we had "dinner" before the afternoon and then tea at night until we went to school and were scolded for saying as much (which for some reason reminds me of being 17, in 5th year at school and the teacher asked me when such and such had happened and I blurted "playtime" when of course I meant the interval. Maybe we should have a "Friday frivolity" of when we engaged the gob before the brain.)

    Hey there guys and gals,

You know, when you start thinking about it comfort zones crop up (if you're not keeping an eye on them) in all sorts of places. You're absolutely right, Mr E, I don't do crosswords because they make my brain hurt; my mental comfort zone is getting in the way - dagnammit!

I've never thought about having a mental one. I know I've had a 'professional' one - but never one around my brain!

In the last few months I've broken through the 'work' one by leaving my job and going self-employed - something I'd wanted to do for ages but that pesky little CZ just kept teasing me back into its folds.

But one of the big things that pushed me out of it was listening to a guy called Miles Hilton-Barber. He's a legend. He lost his sight in his twenties (around 25 years ago now) but since then he's done THE most amazing things. He has done the Marathon des Sables, climbed Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt Blanc, done the Siberian Ice Marathon and set the fastest time for a blind driver to go around the Malaysian Grand Prix circuit (he did it in a 200kph Lotus!) amongst many other mind-blowing things.

I think we're all kinda singing from the same hymn sheet here and I feel sure that lots of you would love the stuff he says...

So whether you're looking for the courage to pick up the biro and tackle the crossword, or climb Everest...or just climb out of bed...I can't recommend him highly enough.

    Have a good day lovelies.

P.S. Talking of getting out of comfort zones I've just been emailed the reading list for a month-long yoga teacher training course I'm going on next year - it's very very very exciting (and just a little bit scary too!).

So I'm going to have to start stretching my physical, mental AND spiritual comfort zones.

Of course I got it "A for E" (litterally! Now that I read it, I didn't mean that little joke, I was just abbreviating A*se for Elbow), it should have
    been :-

    #83 Iain
effect is the outcome / result
    affect is influence / change

PS. Just for a change I will give you all a small history lesson.

Cannon Balls - a History Lesson!

It was necessary to keep a good supply of cannonballs near the cannon on war ships. But how to prevent them from rolling about the deck was the problem.

The best storage method devised was to stack them as a square based pyramid, with one ball on top, resting on four, resting on nine, which rested on sixteen.

Thus, a supply of 30 cannon balls could be stacked in a small
area right next to the cannon.

There was only one problem -- how to prevent the bottom layer from
    sliding/rolling from under the others.

The solution was a metal plate with 16 round indentations, called a Monkey.

But if this plate was made of iron, the iron balls would quickly rust to it.

The solution to the rusting problem was to make Brass Monkeys.

Few landlubbers realize that brass contracts much more and much faster than iron when chilled.

Consequently, when the temperature dropped too far, the brass indentations would shrink so much that the iron cannon balls would
    come right off the monkey.

Thus, it was quite literally, cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.

And all this time, you thought that was a vulgar expression, didn't you?

More to me than jokes you know :-)))
Now time for a coffee and read the days posts.

When I found and listended to this from the internet I found a wealth of other shows to listen to that I didn't even know existed. One that caught my I especially was Pete Mitchell.
Those of us that have followed Chris from a certain other radio station will of course be familiar with Pete from his excellent days with Geoff LLoyd on the evening, drivetime and Breakfast show - how I miss that in the morning.
Anyway, when P & G went there separate ways end of last year I didn't know what happended to Pete but here he is alive and well.
I only report this as there may be other Pete fans out there who might be interested, from memory Chris, you brought P & G from Manchester to the old station? Anyway, how about a plug for Pete's show on the drivetime slot or even get Pete playing for time to tell us all about his show?
