It is day two now of the鈥

鈥.emergency television diet. It鈥檚 a little heard of ten day plan created by me, for me, to drop a stone before I have to appear on the telly next week on COMIC RELIEF.

It will include a complete abstention from any form of alcohol, bread, potatoes, all the way up until next Friday. It will also involve, a two hour work out every day and then in the afternoon my walking to work instead of getting a lift. It鈥檚 all very dull but it does work.

One of the best things about being on the telly, is that it forces you to look after yourself. There's a little vanity in all of us. I should of course do this anyway and I do try but no one really wants to do their homework unless they know they have to hand it in, do they ?

For a forty year old man I do seem to be a little soft, not so much lardy just soft but only on the top half of my body. My legs are rock solid and quite muscley but on my arms and around my sides I鈥檓 just plain soft, almost like a baby and for the life of me I can鈥檛 build up any muscles.

I might go back to yoga but I just can鈥檛 help remembering how hard it was and that was way back when I used to be fit, God knows what I鈥檇 be like at it now. Does work the old yoga though. The most receptive form of exercise I have ever done.

My friend Gareth is due round any second now, it鈥檚 his birthday today. Gareth鈥檚 a truly nice lad, he鈥檚 a television producer. At the moment we鈥檙e writing a script for something we鈥檝e been working on for a couple of weeks. He comes to mine and we have a good couple of hours before we both go and do our day jobs. It鈥檚 amazing what you can fit in if you want to.

Good writing is all about honesty and honesty is all about having your life right, or at least knowing and being able to admit you鈥檝e got it wrong. There鈥檚 nothing wrong with being wrong as long as you鈥檙e aware of it.

After that it鈥檚 doggie walking, phone calls and papers, then the gym, then more phone calls, then a radio script write, then a walk to work and then the show and then Foxy鈥檚 leaving do.

Ahhh, she鈥檚 so nice the Fox. We鈥檝e booked a restaurant around the corner for a meal. No doubt there will be tears from the girls, as there will be from me especially when I鈥檓 shown the wine list or offered a beer. Maybe just the one eh ? That鈥檚 not going to hurt after all is it ? And it is Foxy鈥檚 leaving do for heaven鈥檚 sake..

Er鈥 and then Gareth did say I could pop along to the bar where he鈥檚 having his birthday drinks鈥

Do鈥檋 Do鈥檋 Do鈥檋.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ! What a dilemma.

I wonder if an eight day emergency television diet would work, innovation could be the key here.

P.S. Martin, take it an hour at a time. You have to replace your boozing with something more interesting otherwise you鈥檙e always going to go back to it. Walk, dig a pond, tidy your house. Time and thought are the enemy of the alcoholic, physical exertion is his saviour. Alcohol hates physical exercise, it knows your body will begin to crave the healthier things in life and want to leave 鈥渋t鈥 behind. P.E. also helps focus the brain and quieten the mind and in turn induces better sleep. Get loads of nice cold drinks in, fruit juices, cordials, some chocolate, fruit, surround yourself with anything but alcohol and then do something that makes you want or feel like you deserve to have one of your new treats. Good luck my friend, this is the only time I will refer to this. It鈥檚 time to stop asking for help and do something about it.

I have also found out that I am being offered an interview for the course I have applied for, and that will certainly require a clear mind, so got to step up the effort I think!

    I'm off to a 'do' tonight as well, and I'm gonna have to get the bus. I shall walk the first couple of stops, and get off a stop early, and I am allowing myself two half pints of lager, or four halves of shandy...ahem...try that yourself???

    Alcohol consumption has been nil for the past few weeks in my fitness kick but a night out planned for the weekend with at least one friend in relationship crisis mode will probably mean drinks will be consumed. All in moderation of course!

    Can't think what Foxy was on about last night about her photos on the site - I think she looks fab and healthy.

    Well, back to the slog of work. Roll on 5pm!

    Martin.... I don't tell many folk this but when I was 24 ( which is quite a while back now) I was pretty low on life and I thought , is there any point carrying on. My answer at that time, was no... so the next morning I didn't go to work; after my other half went to work, I took a massive overdose of Paracetomol and Codeine Pills ( around 100 pills over a two hour period) and then went to bed for what I thought would be the very last time. No note, no phone calls to anyone before hand, I was pretty sure that the amount of stuff I'd taken would do the job long before my other half got home. Just by chance, my other half came home at lunch-time and found me unconscious on the bedroom floor in a pool of vomit; phoned an ambulance;.. my heart stopped twice on the way to the hospital although I was unaware of that until afterwards..... they had to use the electric shock machine thing to restart my heart, twice on the journey....... my first recollection of being in hospital was waking up , gagging on a hosepipe ( a green one with a funnel attached) - that seemed to last forever...... a while later, a Doctor came to see me and he said, I don't know why you're smiling, you've ruined your liver, you'll be dead within a year and I said back to him, all I have to offer you, is my smile. We didn't speak again. I had an "experience" ( which I won't go into at this time) while I was unconscious, maybe a dream, maybe real .. I don't know, I don't care really because it changed my life beyond all recognition. So, here I am 16 years later .. liver still in tact, living the most fantastic life I could ever have imagined. I was so wrong, when at 24, I concluded that life wasn't worth living.

    Try Pilates rather than Yoga CLP, I love Pilates and hate yoga as I find yoga to hard, where as Pilates I just love.......

    Weighed myself on Monday and just under a stone has crept on since stopping Pilates, it is the Silver Birthday in just under a month so have started the emergency workout plan, 150 sit-ups and 100 squats with out stopping every morning and evening, give it two weeks and the soft bits vanish!

    My hubby鈥檚 legs are amazing too (even my mother comments on them!) but he has added a few pounds on top! And he plays football and cricket and cycles up and down hills every day to work! He鈥檚 43 and just can鈥檛 seem to shift the weight, poor lad! When I was ill and piled on the weight, I adopted a rescue greyhound. Not only did having him help me regain my health and fitness, but the weight dropped off with the walking we did through the forests. Perhaps you and Enzo need to find a country home with forests and hills on the doorstep!

    Sounds interesting, whatever it is that you are working on with Gareth! What a blessing it is that you feel you are getting your life right!

    I can鈥檛 believe it鈥檚 Foxes leaving do! It won鈥檛 be the same without her! Please make her promise to come back! Don鈥檛 eat or drink too much, honey 鈥 you鈥檒l only regret it when those cameras are on you! What time are you on at, by the way - we are at a ceilidh that night, but I want to make it back. And please tell me it鈥檚 national you are doing and not regional - if it鈥檚 regional I will be well cheesed off!!!

    What you said to Martin is great and I almost cried! You're exactly right that he needs to be active to keep occupied. I was thinking about how on a weekend my hubby and I tend to have a drink at home and during that time, nothing else gets done. If we stay sober we do SO MUCH more.

    It's also about triggers because I always fancy a drink when I watch certain TV progs cos it's what I've always done. However, if I make an effort to watch them with a cup of tea in hand, it's SO much nicer and I wake up the next day feeling so pleased with myself. Sleep after booze isn't sleep at all, it's just unconciousness which can't be good.

    I did a huge thing yesterday about Enzo's behaviour to tell you how to deal with the aggression to dogs (I'm a behaviourist - as though I hadn't mentioned it before!) and for some reason it didn't load on. Perhaps cos I included my own email address and that's maybe not allowed.

    Anyway, it took ages to type up, but here we go again... (Obviously, if you need to know more, you can't email me unless the board 'manager' has my details)...

    Firstly, if Enzo is on a choke chain, get rid of it! The most important thing to remember is that dogs learn BY ASSOCIATION so if everytime he pulls towards a dog, he is effectively being strangled, then he starts to thinks that dogs strangle you, so he decides to get in there first.

    Instead, invest in a good quality head collar such as a Halti (size 2 should do it unless he's huge). This gives you better control of where he is looking and also gives you a bit more confidence as he can't pull so much. If you get a halti, try to get the additional strap which fixes to the collar for extra security in case he gets it off.

    Next, take LOADS of tasty treats such as bits of cheese, corned beef, ham, chicken etc and as you walk along keep saying "What's this?" and giving him a treat. That way he's focusing on you. When a dog appears, get him to look at you, instead of what's going on around him (if he starts to bark etc, DON'T give him a treat - you'll reward the barking).

    If he does start to go mad, just lead him away from the situation and stop the treats. Also, you MUST try to be relaxed - not easy I know - so that (as your guest the other night said) he isn't picking up on your panic. Also, if you pull him towards you, his 'fight or flight' instincts kick in and as he can't get away from the situation, he has to 'fight' instead.

    Plus, if you're pulling his head up, the other dog reads this as a 'my dad's bigger than your dad' kind of signal, as though he wants to attack, so they then become defensive.

    Practise this regularly and don't avoid dogs or it will never be sorted. Take it one day at a time and use lots of treats to keep him looking at you. When you first get the halti, put it on in the house at feeding/play times so he builds up a pleasant association at first.

    Hope all this helps (and pray it's allowed this time cos I'm sick of typing). Good luck and if you need to know more, you can always try a local behaviourist. (I'd love to visit and I'd do it for FREE!!!)

I know you鈥檝e already spoken to a dog behaviourist on the show, but I really think you should get Jo to work with Enzo and share it with us all!

I would like to call myself a social drinker as I don't drink at odd times of the day or hide it but once I have the taste, I'm off.

    However my friend and I set ourselves a challenge for new year and decided we wouldnt drink for 6 weeks!!! Guess what we did it. My husband and I also had quite a bad car accident in that time and I still didn't have a drink. I made sure that I had some other non alcoholic drink in the fridge that would be my treat for the evening or a mug of hot chocolate.Just pour it and don't think too much about it.

    I am quite a determined person and couldn't give up on a challenge, it worked for 6 weeks for me and I felt fab,(slept so much better, skin was glowing just felt good!!) still thoroughly enjoyed a social life,which I thought I wouldn't without a drink and never knew Sunday mornings could be so bright and cheery!!

    Anyway keep that mind focused, you don't need alcohol it's not a friend. Find something to keep your mind busy when thinking of alcohol.

    longer be automatic, but will arrive at your bank by cheque, addressed personally and confidentially to an employee at your bank whom you must nominate.

    Be aware that it is an offence under the Postal Act for any other person to open such an envelope. Please find attached an Application Contact Status which I require your chosen employee to complete.

    I am sorry it runs to eight pages, but in order that I know as much about him or her as your bank knows about me, there is no alternative.

    in case you're wondering why i've replied i'm a QUALIFIED registered dietitian and one of the biggest problems we face is explaining to people that crash dieiting doesn't work and that starchy foods are good for you. perhaps you need to contact the British Dietetic Association and get someone on the program like you did with the blood presssure thing the other week. alternativly you could go the their web-site, where you will find lots of free fact sheets about nutrition.
