I KNOW SOMETHING YOU DON'T

Chris Evans | 14:27 UK time, Thursday, 17 April 2008

You can't see it but my end of the blog is...

different to your end. Radically different. I've just been taken through it by Interactive Ian. I was thrilled and then i said, "So, how different will it look their end ?" "Oh exactly the same." came the diappointing reply. Honestly what is in front of me now is really snazzy. nEven my font is groovy but alas it is a groove not to be passed on.

Tis' late merry band and the local authorities have not been forthcoming for what we need guest- wise. Not a single offer of a spokesperson as to why roundabouts and traffic lights are chosen in different circumstances. Never mind, we may instead employ the services of a "traffic psychologist !" Wow get a load of that.

My dream ability hit a new high last night when for the first time some text appeared in my dream that was actually readable. I've often encountered dream text before but then when I've tried to read it, it always truns out to be a load of mumbo jumbo. The text last night was an authentication of provenance for a book of Charlie Chaplain set design notes from the great man himself,, along with a swatch of various materials for use as wall coverings in his private house. I know, I need to see someone.

Hey dudes, dudettes, Big Chief CLP et al . . .

I feel Brand new - I am now hyphoned and pigeon-holed FOR MY OWN SECURITY AND PROTECTION (How many times have I heard that over here in the last 25 years ??. .)

Anyways, thanks James for the putter advice - still waiting one half of a certain golfing partnership (red hair, specs, speaks between records . . .MARRIED TO A GOLF PRO, for GG's sake!) to pass on his wisdom on the idea but sure.. we had things on our mind yesterday . .

Good afternoon to all, just having a practice here not convinced I've got this log in sorted.
Dreams: I hardly ever remember mine and as for getting script/text in them...... do you have your spec's on in your dream - is some squinting to focus involved or perhaps perfect vision for all in a dream state.
Perhaps ARF request should be I can see clearly now - Johnny Nash.

Ooo this is nice. It does look 'slightly' different from our end, but doesn't sound as snazzy as your end (phnar phnar...) .
Chris, I would be v.careful before consulting somebody on your dreams - they may just take you away - and where would that leave us??!

Biggles Mum you are right...... the blog clock is an hour slow..... but the posting is immediate so maybe a Tardis traveller is involved. Who could that be?

Greetings and salutations from Vancouver, Canada...

Dreams are indeed a curious things. If on browes through history, many a maxim and quite a few speeches extol the virtue of dreams whilst exhibiting the versatility of the concept...

Dream as if you'll live forever, live as if you'll die today...I have a dream...A goal is merely a dream with a deadline...Some dream of success, others wake up and work hard for it...Dreams are lost when your fear overwhelms your faith...

You get the point. Regardless of how bizarre your dreams are, Mr. Evans of Warrington, they sound mightily entertaining.

Have a grand day, one and all and remember.."all the world's a stage, but so many are despartely unrehearsed"....

Wilsmar he still hasn't told us if his Big secret was the Tardis traveller has he A?CLP?

    Funniest name so far Liz!

If it wasn't such a slow song you should go for the Everly Bros Dream for ARF but I still prefer Sylvia by Focus - boring old boot aren't I?

PS: If you have no-one to talk to, why not get someone from the Scottish Executive to tell us why oh why we can't have another bridge over the Forth? See Scottish news on ´óÏó´«Ã½ website. Absolutely dire. I was going to visit my daughter and my georgeous boys tonight but didn't even attempt it. I worry that, if anything was wrong with any of them, I couldn't get over that damnable bridge.

    Hello one and all

This new blog/log in, is like the old way of signing up for the ´óÏó´«Ã½ message boards. Sadly could not get my old names like Major Tom or Savills Travels.

As for dreams I sometimes have the most strange ones. It's like your very own Steven Speilberg movie for free.

Off to see this Rolling Stones film tonight not wanting to let friends down. It could be a long night.

Thought I caught a bit of Kc and the sushine band last night on the show. Boogie on down.

    Hi

legingembre - how did the op go? Glad to hear you online x

    Super_bagpuss aka Elm x

  • Comment number 30.

About the whole roundabouts or traffic lights thing. It's traffic flow.

Roundabouts keep you moving (unless you have a too much traffic from certain directions – I'll come back to that), whereas traffic lights hold you up usually to keep you adding to a troublesome junction further along the road.

However, roundabouts can become dominated by particular arms joining it, so they might add traffic lights to the roundabout to give everyone a chance of getting around it.

Or they might do without the roundabout and just have traffic lights.

And of course, roundabouts take up more space, so you have no option but to have traffic lights in some spots.

They might also be concerned about pedestrians being able to cross (they never are though). Roundabouts are no good at all for pedestrians or cyclists, but they still put them in as car traffic comes first.

You can of course have continental roundabouts (minimal flare in the arms) which are better for pedestrians and cyclists as they slow the traffic far more, but they're rare in the UK.

    Simple isn't it?

This is all variable of course, and at the whim of the particular highways authority designer rules the day. They're not people people, and hide behind their road design rules if faced with humans.

Before you ask, I'm not a highways authority designer, just someone who needs more to do in his life.

  • Comment number 31.

    Greetings one and all,

Contrary to a comment I heard on air previously, there are many more than just a single roundabout in Canada (though there is one in Banff, as stated). Where I reside in Vancouver, there are many roundabouts.

Some are decorated most beautifully with floral designs worthy of Kew and gardening worthy of Mr.Titschmarch himself. In the West End are of the city the streets are positively awash with them.

    That's all from me.

    Dr. T.

LittlestHobo1 - hope you are well..... when I was in Toronto - 19 years ago OMG! - I never saw a roundabout and was out and about everyday for the full three weeks. Infact got slightly hyper when we went round a bendy bit of the road. Actually missed the blasted things so have been a saddo for a long time obviously.

Yes Blogfan - I'm sure it was Roy Cropper at his day job!

  • Comment number 45.

    By the way the roundabouts.

Over in Ireland they see roundabouts as a perfect opportunity to throw up some fabulously mad installations, such as the one near Cork airport which is home to the scaldiest piece of topiary in the shape of an aeroplane I've ever seen, it's marvellous and makes me titter every time I pass it. They're fond of naming their roundabouts, too.

And there's one heading out of Athlone that points to Galway at every exit. So you just follow your nose and hope with all your senses not to come across a sign with the two words guaranteed to strike fear and trepidation into the heart of the most intrepid traveller:

    "Scenic Route."

And can I propose an award for the best roadsign ever seen on the bumpy road through El Paso, aka. County Monaghan.

    "Free Breast Checks After Roadworks."

    Hurrah that's me sorted then.

    Mary.

    Lovely to hear from you.

Today has been a much better day, thank you. Indeed, I can sense the sun will come up again tomorrow.

Only it is supposed to chuck it down.

Had a lovely meal out with Mrs MfR, mother of MfR and sister of MfR. In a nutshell, all my special ladies.

Whilst there, I bumped into an ex-colleague. The last time I saw him was about 3 years ago at a Christmas party. A week later he was involved in a terrible road accident. Whilst he was recovering, I left the company, which was eventually closed down and everyone went their seperate ways. It was great to him so well, and it certainly helped to put my current woes into perspective.

So today I am smiling and tomorrow, despite the rain, I shall try and smile again.

    Huge peace and love

    Have a good one Chris

    Carl in Donny

  • Comment number 52.

Dissing Dave. Don't get me goin'.

As I said earlier. There's no excuse for chuckin' ANYthing out the car window unless it's got wings and buzzin'.

And a cautionary note to those of yous who think it's reasonable to throw lit fag ends out. Many moons ago as we hurtled up the motorway, the dear departed father Eric finished his cigarette, rolled the window down and threw the lit butt out. Unfortunately for him, although marvellously exciting for us kids in the back, it blew straight back in and set his crutch a-smouldering.

The consequent 3rd. degree scorching to his wedding tackle was Divine Retribution in itself, you would think; but actually Eric was rather less upset about that than the fact that Renee attempted to staunch the flames by chuckin' his can of best bitter over him.

    Ah yes. Happy days.

Not sure if the ´óÏó´«Ã½ ever take note of these Blogs but just had to say they have done a good thing in getting Chris Evans (whom I once detested in his younger days;-) on to Radio 2. He's a breath of fresh air for a rather stale station with folk like wogan and his copycat Bruce. He surely appeals to all ages unlike his Radio 1 conterpart Moyles who can only be amusing to teens with bad attitudes or older wannabe teens enjoying his constant whinging/slagging off and apparent lack of wit...... Anyway, Chris Evans, Well Done for developing into a very personable, friendly and open (although you were always open to the extreme) chum that makes my drive home more enjoyable - definitely the best presenter ´óÏó´«Ã½ has.......

    Hi Lord Evans of Warrington

I have read the blog for a while and as its a revamped blog thought why not become new member.

Happy 2nd birthday and can't wait for the weekend, wife and eldest in the states so me and my girls 11 and 14 in for a Dad and girls weekend, whatever one of them is....me thinks it's Hair, make-up and talk of boys and a request for mates to sleep over.

ARF Be Bop by Hanson.....lively, sing alongable and above it's so untrendy it's trendy.

    Hello Chris

How fab! I have just registered and can now hopefully blog without too many 502's! I gave up a few months ago because it wasn't worth the time it took to keep trying. Hurrah. Hello everybody, I'm here and interested in all your happenings. My life seems a bit boring compared to yours. Do you all know each other away from the blog? It does seem that way sometimes.

My request for the opening of tonights show is anything by Gladys Night and the Pips - wonderful.

    Nice weekend everybody!

Hi all. I don't think anybody has got our old blog names, I think they are just not allowing them to be used anymore. I don't see anyone who has their old blog name!

  • Comment number 83.

B-sMum, I absolutely put the dinner down in front of him and he ate it. I think he was too scared not to!

Hope your son has a great Birthday Gingembre and enjoy the cake. Better sit out the hockey cockey at the party on Sunday though! Seriously, hope that the knees aren't causing you too much discomfort x

Blimey it's packed in here - hurrah!!!

I couldn't believe it last night when my post appeared within seconds of hitting the magic button. Well done Auntie and Interactive Ian for sorting this one out.

I felt terribly old this morning. I decided to grab Duran Duran's first (self titled) album to play in the car en route to work (obv. a CD of the album, not the vinyl one as (a) it would jump and (b) the Micra doesn't have a turntable! Anyhoo, merrily driving along, singing along to Planet Earth and it suddenly dawned on me that that album is now 27 years old. Blimey!

Then I got to thinking .... where on earth has the time gone? I still feel young, dress fairly snazzy in my middle aged goth kinda way, enjoy a good social life but on the flip side the body aches a bit more than I'd like to admit .... so for everyone reading this who is just about to turn 40 (like what I am!!) here's something to hopefully put a smile on your face and a spring in your step on this cold Friday afternoon:-

    Ra Ra Skirts
    Pedal Pushers
    Sailor Blouses
    Loafers
    Banjo Bars
    Hair crimpers
    The Tube
    Oxford Road Show
    Mark Ellen
    Smash Hits letters' page

Right, I'm off to an online site to buy some Japan and China Crisis CDs!!

If I don't get to blog again this week, have grand weekends one and all!

    CtD x x x

PS: Bad Boys - Wham! please please please CLP xxxxxx

Good work on the Russell Brand show BUT please Nic, stand up for yourself!! Don't let "Ole Russ" bully you - he's already destroying Matt!

And congrats on the Morrissey thing on last week's show - one of the funniest things I've heard in yonks.

Wow you are all right this is a lot faster and easier to use and with the comment box at the bottom of the blog much much more fun.

Gingembre - hope you have a good 3rd birthday party with you being out of action for your little boy. Never mind when you are better he will benefit from the footie skills you will no doubt be able to pass on.... :)

I think my username might be because I used to log into a bbc messageboard and used it there.

Girls you are all making me smile - keep up the good work and the Women's minute has been great this week to drive home to.

    Cheers

I'm supposed to be doing housework but the blog is too good today!

Must, must do some housework now!

LOL Debbie - I've just done the invites for my 40th and included a "montage" of me photos (as any self-respecting Leo would!) and whatdayaknow, there's one of me mid-goth transition with black hair wearing a Wham! "Choose Life" t-shirt! I recall the Frankie Says .. ones were like gold-dust at the time!

    Snoods. Nik Kershaw.

Leg warmers. Have they gone out of mode then?!?!

    CtD x x x

  • Comment number 93.

Well that's the hoovering done and dog fed. I'm getting there!

CtD, I would love to get one of the 'Choose Life' t-shirts now. I had a red jumper with a picture of George Michael across the front at the time, the memories are flooding back.

All the jewellery was cherise pink, turquoise blue or green plastic too I seem to recall. Or did I just have really bad taste?

fabjdb123, good for you with the weightwatching. I have put a bit on since not working but I'm thinking of telling Mr Debbie that it's ok as there is more of me to love. Also, now that he gives me housekeeping he is getting more for his money. Terrible I know, sorry!

You can't see it but my end of the blog is...

    ...but that's not for here.

Hi Chris and all you lovely contributors,

I continue to listen to the show (it's a great one by the way Chris!) and read/lurk on the blog but it's been a long time since I last commented.

The offer of new blogging toys overwhelmed me....so here I am! I feel very grown up with my new_joined_up_writing_name and felt the need to suggest a starter for ten for ARF.

How about 'Ice Cream Man' by David Lee Roth ?

Everybody.......be gentle with the new technology....it's its first day.....ahhhh.

Arfday greetings and hello to wonderfulBuffycat.......
Mary (MWK) you always say nice things about/to me... thanks.
Re user names..... could it have something to do with the length of the name - thinking of you here DWNB/EmM - but so many others have had to change theirs and they are longer or as long as mine - Gingembre/Clodagh. So that blows that theory out of the water.
A very pleasant weekend to all.
